A General Explanation of the Bardos A General Explanation of the Bardos ༄༅། །The practice path of the Dzogchen Khandro Nyingtik. A concise introduction to the method of liberating delusion, called "Self-Liberation of Illusion," extracted from the oral instructions of the Excellent Path of Liberation, for individuals of middling capacity to be liberated in the bardo and those of lower capacity to be liberated in the realm of the self-arisen nirmanakaya. ༄༅། །GURU RATNA MAHĀ SANDHI NIRMĀ MŪRTI BHYAḤ (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) In this life, the next life, the bardo, etc., at all times, may you surely protect us, Only protector, perfect great nirmanakaya, I prostrate with reverence with my three doors. Myself and my followers, disciples, The method of liberating the mind's delusion and grasping, A concise introduction to the key bardo, Develop from the state of loving-kindness and compassion. Here, the instructions of the self-arisen great perfection, The diligent, superior ones attain enlightenment in this life, The middling ones attain enlightenment in the bardo, And the lowest ones are liberated in the realm of the self-arisen nirmanakaya, It is said that there are three. Now, here, for the two, middling and lowest, To clarify the necessary concise introduction of the key points, And for the guests, like winnowing, These two methods are spoken for the inferior to understand easily. First, all phenomena included in samsara and nirvana, existence and non-existence, grasping and not grasping, are condensed into the three, ground, path, and result, and practiced. For this, all sentient beings, from the beginning of delusion from the ground, until the attainment of the three kayas, are all in the state of bardo. Therefore, all the scriptures that tame can also be designated as the terminology of the bardo classification. It is said that such a bardo, recognizing the bardo in the bardo, and the intention to transform it into the true path is very important. There are three general meanings in the way to practice this: First, a general explanation of the bardo classification, Second, a detailed explanation of the necessity of the time, Third, summarizing with precious instructions. Among them, first, the general explanation of the bardo classification, this has the nature of the bardo, the meaning of the word or explanation, the classification of the bardo, and the way to practice taking and abandoning each, etc., four. First, the nature is

Initially, within the primordial expanse of the Ground of Original Purity, all states of dualistic mind that appear as other are inherently its essence. All that appears as Ground-Appearance Body and Wisdom is the Bardo of Pure Dharmata. All phenomena encompassed by the deluded appearance of the six realms are the Bardo of Impure Delusion. Secondly, the meaning of the word or definition is: the interval between the former and the latter is designated as Bardo. Sentient beings of Samsara initially proceed forth from the expanse of the Ground of Original Purity, and subsequently must dissolve and vanish into the expanse of the Fruition-Appearance. Therefore, the present is the interval between the former and the latter, and the connecting link between beginning and end, together with the seed of mind, is called Bardo. Thirdly, regarding the divisions and boundaries: according to the Dzogchen Khandro Nyingthig, from the perspective of Sound Thallgyur, there are four divisions: the Bardo of Nature, the Bardo of Dying, the Bardo of Dharmata, and the Bardo of Existence. According to Karma Lingpa's terma, the Hearing Liberation, there are six Bardos: the Bardo of Birth-Place, the Bardo of Dream, the Bardo of Meditation, the Bardo of Dying, the Bardo of Dharmata, and the Bardo of Existence. Among these, firstly, the boundary of the Bardo of Nature or the Bardo of Birth-Place is from the moment of conception in the mother's womb until the onset of fatal illness. Therefore, the Bardo of Dream and the Bardo of Meditation in the Hearing Liberation are also included within it. The boundary of the Bardo of Dying is from the certainty of death until the cessation of inner breath. The boundary of the Bardo of Dharmata is from the cessation of inner breath, when the appearance of Clear Light arises, until dissolution into the appearance of Spontaneous Presence. The boundary of the Bardo of Existence is from the dissolution into the appearance of Spontaneous Presence until the establishment of the future existence. Fourthly, the methods of practice for each are taught through two aspects: example and meaning. Firstly, the Nyingthig has four Bardos, while the Hearing Liberation speaks of six. Because this Hearing Liberation is very popular in our land, it is necessary for everyone to know it. Therefore, combining both the Hearing Liberation and the Nyingthig, these six Bardos are explained. Firstly, the instruction for severing clinging and attachment with the instruction of the Bardo of Nature-Birth-Place is like a bird entering its nest. Before building its nest, the bird carefully examines whether there is any harm from enemies, and only builds the nest when it is certain there is no harm. Later, when entering the nest, the mind
