A Clarification of the Essence of Meaning: Explaining the Differences Between the Common and Uncommon Ways of Entering Saṃsāra, Concerning the Key Points of the Profound Sūtras and Tantras. A Clarification of the Essence of Meaning: Explaining the Differences Between the Common and Uncommon Ways of Entering Saṃsāra, Concerning the Key Points of the Profound Sūtras and Tantras. Herein is A Clarification of the Essence of Meaning, Explaining the Differences Between the Common and Uncommon Ways of Entering Saṃsāra, Concerning the Key Points of the Profound Sūtras and Tantras. Namo Mañjughoṣāya. Supreme guide of gods and humans, Powerful Sage, Vajradhara. Lord of loving-kindness, Mipham Jampel. Great Chariot and other ornaments of Jambudvīpa, And the Second Buddha with his lineage, I prostrate. The essential meaning of all the scriptures, Although the distinctions between saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are vast, Here, a brief explanation of the stages of entering saṃsāra, Will be given for the benefit of some intelligent beings. This has three parts: identifying saṃsāra, explaining the stages of entering saṃsāra itself, and the necessity of knowing it as such. First: Some, based on what is said in the Pramāṇavārttika, "The aggregates that are the cause of suffering, saṃsāra," consider the five aggregates of appropriation of a saṃsāric being to be saṃsāra. Others, based on what the Protector Nāgārjuna said in the Ratnāvalī, "The three paths have no beginning, end, or middle; the circle of saṃsāra is like a wheel of fire turning in the opposite direction; like a wheel of fire, they depend on each other; this conditioned thing becomes saṃsāra," maintain that saṃsāra is the continuous cycle of birth and death, one after another, under the influence of karma and afflictions. Still others consider the connection to rebirth under the influence of karma and afflictions, or a part of that connection, or a particularly binding aspect, to be saṃsāra. As it says in the Lamrim Chenmo, "In terms of the place of birth, the aggregates themselves are connected in four ways, such as the womb, which is the nature of being bound, and liberation from that is liberation." And in the Ngakrim Chenmo, "Universally, from the co-emergent self-grasping comes the saṃsāra of connecting the aggregates of suffering themselves." Thus, they consider the identification of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa to be like that, and our own system is also like that. Second, there are three parts: the common stages of entry, the uncommon stages of entry, and the ancillary meaning. First, there are two parts: identifying the root of saṃsāra and how one cycles in saṃsāra under its influence, and explaining the stages of entry in detail. First:

Because, in the continuum of us ordinary beings, the thought of 'I' and the thought of 'mine' arise, clinging to a dharma that is actually empty in nature as being self-established. This worldly view or ignorance is the very root of samsara. Due to its power, we accumulate both black and white karma. Due to the power of that karma, we wander in the cycle of good and bad destinies. As it says in the Eight Thousand Verses: 'Subhuti, what do you think? Have sentient beings been engaging in clinging to 'I' and 'mine' for a long time?' Subhuti replied, 'Bhagavan, it is so. Sugata, it is so, sentient beings have been engaging in clinging to 'I' and 'mine' for a long time.' The Buddha said, 'Subhuti, what do you think? Is the clinging to 'I' and 'mine' empty?' Subhuti replied, 'Bhagavan, it is empty. Sugata, it is empty.' The Buddha said, 'Subhuti, what do you think? Do sentient beings wander in samsara because of clinging to 'I' and 'mine'?' Subhuti replied, 'Bhagavan, it is so. Sugata, it is so, sentient beings wander in samsara because of clinging to 'I' and 'mine'.' Furthermore, in the Compendium of Sutras, it also says: 'Sentient beings are completely attached to the desire for food, those whose minds are filled with attachment to samsara, always wander continuously. The two, 'I' and 'mine,' are not truly real, but are empty. Fools tie knots in the sky with themselves. For example, being poisoned by a mistaken perception of poison, even if the poison has not entered the body, one will faint. Similarly, fools cling to 'I' and 'mine,' a mistaken perception of 'I' arises, and they are terrified. As they cling, so are all afflictions taught, and it is said that the state of not focusing on 'I' is pure.' Therefore, due to clinging to 'I,' sentient beings wander in samsara, and realizing no-self liberates one from samsara. In explaining its meaning, the Protector Nagarjuna said: 'If all of this is empty, without birth, without essence, then how do happiness and suffering, etc., enter here? How does karma cause wandering in samsara?' He raised the question: If karma and afflictions, etc., have no inherent existence, then how do sentient beings wander in samsara due to their power? As a response to this, he said: 'As soon as the thought of clinging to 'I' arises, defilements such as desire arise through discrimination.
