The great kalpa is sixteen thousand. The lifespan of the first formless realm is twenty thousand kalpas, the second is forty thousand kalpas, the third is sixty thousand kalpas, and the fourth is eighty thousand great kalpas. Furthermore, the lifespan of the first hot hell, the Reviving Hell, is one trillion, six hundred and twenty billion human years. The remaining hells, such as the Black Line Hell, are eight times longer. The lifespan of the Avici Hell is one intermediate kalpa. Around each of the eight hells, there are sixteen additional neighboring hells. In the Nirvana Sutra and the Great Liberation Sutra, many different hells are also described. The lifespan of the first cold hell, the Blister Hell, is equivalent to the time it takes to empty a large Magadha granary that can hold eighty cartloads of rice, by removing one sesame seed every hundred years. The lifespans of the remaining seven hells, such as the Bursting Blister Hell, increase by twenty times each. Except for the unpleasant sounds, those hells mentioned earlier experience death in the bardo. In the first kalpa, the lifespan of humans is equal to that of the Brahma realm, or immeasurable, and their bodies are also very large. Most human bodies now are four cubits tall. In the east, eight cubits; in the west, sixteen cubits; in the north, thirty-two cubits. The Four Great Kings are one-fourth of a krosha. The Thirty-three Gods are two parts of that. The Gods of No Strife are one-third of a krosha, the Gods of Tushita are one krosha. The Gods of Enjoying Emanations are one and one-fourth kroshas. The Gods of Controlling Others' Emanations are one and a half kroshas. The bodies of the retinue of Brahma are half a yojana. The attendants of Brahma are one yojana. The Great Brahma is one and a half yojanas. The Gods of Limited Light are two yojanas. Then, doubling each time, the Gods of Immeasurable Light are four yojanas. The Gods of Clear Light are eight yojanas. Until the Akanishta Heaven, the body is sixteen thousand yojanas. However, the Cloudless Heaven is considered to be three yojanas. The body of the Asura king Rahu is like Mount Meru. Most of the others are like the bodies of the Four Great Kings, and some can reach the size of the bodies of the Thirty-three Gods. The bodies of the Eight Great Nagas are very large, and the others vary in size. The cause of being born in these realms is definitely good and bad karma, and there is no other cause. That is, by various good deeds, one is born in the heavens and as a human, experiencing happiness. By non-virtuous deeds, one is born in those lower realms, experiencing suffering.

Thus it is. As it is said in the Ratnavali: "From non-virtue, all sufferings arise, as do all the evil destinies. From virtue, all happy destinies arise, and happiness in all lifetimes." As it is said. Although there are many kinds of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, if we categorize them, they are included in the ten paths of action. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha: "From that, briefly summarized, are the virtuous and non-virtuous, as appropriate. The paths of action are said to be ten." Therefore. Not only happiness and suffering, but all phenomena and beings arise from karma related to one's own mind. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha: "The diverse world arises from karma." And as it is said in the Madhyamakavatara: "The mind itself establishes the world of sentient beings and the world of objects, which are extremely diverse. It is said that all beings arise from karma." As it appears. Although there are many kinds of happiness and suffering obtained through karma, among all happiness, the happiness of peace is the most supreme, and among all sufferings, the suffering of Avici hell is the most unbearable. As it is said in the Suhrllekha: "Among all happiness, the exhaustion of craving is the lord of happiness. Likewise, among all sufferings, the suffering of Avici hell is utterly inexhaustible." Therefore. Some Arhats may have many past actions that have not yet ripened, but because the afflictions of craving and so on have been exhausted, those actions cannot produce a result. As it is said in the Pramanavarttika: "Having completely transcended the craving of craving, karma cannot propel another birth, because the accompanying factors have been exhausted." Therefore. From the occurrence of idle hands with nothing to do, thinking that it might benefit some intelligent people, this method has been arranged. By the virtue of this pure white, may all beings become Buddhas! This scattered meaning of Abhidharma was composed with faith by the Shakya monk named Shedup (Explanation and Practice) at Chone Monastery. The scattered meanings that come from the Abhidharma are: do gods and humans have happiness and suffering, hunger and thirst, wealth, grain, etc., or not?
