From the peaceful passing away (of the Buddha) until this present Wood Rabbit year, five sets of five hundred have been completed. From the sixth five-hundred period, from the chapter on discipline, 116 years have passed, and now it is situated in the Fire Dragon year. The second point is: I think that this Dharma of Abhidharma, for the most part, is explained according to the tenets of the Kashmir Vaibhashika school. If there are any incorrect explanations, that is my own fault. For the tenets of the true Dharma, the Buddhas are the only valid authority. So it is said. O learned Vasubandhu (teacher), according to which tenets is this treatise, the Abhidharmakosha, explained? I think that you, the teacher Vasubandhu, explain this Dharma of Abhidharma mostly according to the tenets of the Kashmir Vaibhashika school, and also slightly according to the views of the Sutrantika and the Sunyata schools. If there are any incorrect explanations in this treatise, that is my fault, the author's fault. This is not because there is a fault in the root of this treatise, that is, in the meaning of the words of the sutras and shastras, but because for the tenets of the Dharma of scripture and realization, the Buddha Shakyamuni and the Arhats and wise ones are the only valid authorities, while ordinary beings are prone to error. The third point is: The teacher, the eye of the world, has closed (Nirvana), and most of the people who held power over the Dharma have passed away. At that time, those who did not see the truth and acted as they pleased, with their wrong views, disturbed the Dharma. Those who have renounced and cherish the Dharma have all passed into peace, and there is no protector. Those who have no restraint and destroy merit, those defilements, are now rampant here. Therefore, for the teachings of the Buddhas, like secretly taking life, those defilements are discovered when they are powerful, and those who desire liberation should be careful. So it is said. The teacher, like the eye of the world, has closed, that is, entered Nirvana. Most of the noble beings who held power over the tenets of the Dharma have passed away. In that era, those who did not see the truth of the Dharma and acted as they pleased, you disturbed the teachings of the Buddha with your wrong views. You people, you all misunderstand the meaning of the words of the teachings, act as you please, and moreover

Those noble beings who cherished the Buddha and his natural teachings have passed into the peaceful waters of Nirvana. When beings have no protector, there is no one to give them good instruction. Now, the merits of the three trainings are destroyed by the defilements of the three poisons, and people act as they please. Therefore, the teachings of the Buddhas are like a life gone into hiding, as short as a breath. When the defilements of the degenerate age, that is, faults, are known to be powerful, those who desire liberation should be vigilant. This is an exhortation and instruction, and it has its necessity, because vigilance is the root of all qualities. The third part is the meaning of the conclusion, including who the author is and which translator and editor translated it. The first point is that the author of the *Treasury of Abhidharma* in verse is the Shākya monk Vasubandhu, and his work is complete. This is easy to understand. The biography of this scholar, as detailed in the history of Indian Buddhism, is inconceivable. In my opinion, this scholar is completely identical to the great chariot Asanga in holding the true Dharma, so it is certain that he is a great noble being and should not be regarded merely as an ordinary scholar. Therefore, do not think that he is an ordinary person because he is a Sautrāntika or a Mind-Only proponent. If someone asks, how can this scholar become a noble being since he had a history of slandering the Mahāyāna scriptures in his early life? There is no contradiction at all, because we see that even noble beings show various behaviors according to their needs. This scholar has ninety-nine kotis of texts in his mind, so he has become a great scholar not only surpassing the scholars who appeared later in India, but also surpassing the earlier great paṇḍitas, so he is known as the Second Buddha, and this name is in accordance with his reality. The second point is about the translator and editor. By the Indian abbot Jinamitra and the editor-translator Bande Paltshek, it was translated from Sanskrit into Tibetan, and after discussion and research, it was finalized. | Spoken: A branch of the well-spoken that comes from the ocean of the Sugata's teachings

Endowed with eight qualities of water. With a single sip of vast wisdom, to dispel the suffering of those with the fortune to partake. The essence of Dharma-Abhidhamma, the nectar of immortality, emanating from the mouth of the great sage Vasubandhu, skilled in emesis and unprecedented, has become an offering to beings, including gods, in this world. From the eighty-four thousand aggregates of Dharma, The common inner meaning is the doctrine of emptiness, Though numerous, they encompass all the essential points of meaning, This Abhidhamma text is superior to other Abhidhamma texts. The commentaries that explain the intention of this, Though there are some in the noble land and in this region, Some are very concise in both words and meaning, Some are ornate, making it difficult for those of small intellect to enter. Therefore, for both words and meaning to be appropriate, From the many texts of previous scholars, I have carefully compiled the parts of the explanation that are without error, And I have written with the thought that it might benefit myself and others. If the root has gone somewhere and disappeared here, Seeing that the difference in benefit to its meaning is small, In order to gain certainty, from the second Buddha's, The root texts are completely quoted and arranged. Hey, friends, for worldly household matters, And for mere food and clothing without distinction, Do not strive and waste your life in vain, Look to the well-spoken words that are the source of benefit and happiness. The meaning of the Abhidhamma ocean is difficult to fathom, I am of small intellect and my strength of learning is also weak, Therefore, whatever is unsaid or wrongly said in this, Whatever there is, that is my fault. May the virtue gained from the well-spoken words, Enable me to uphold the sacred Dharma in all my lifetimes, And may this explanation of the text also cause all the Dharma principles of Abhidhamma, To flourish, expand, and remain for a long time! Thus, this commentary called "Clarifying the Intentions of All the Sons of the Buddhas and the Holy Assembly" on the Abhidharmakosha, was urged by the lord of the Cho-ne teachings, Kausi Nangso Yeshe, with offerings and so on. He himself also generated faith from all aspects, and it was well-compiled in his own monastery by the Cho-ne Khenpo Drakpa Shedrup. The scribe of the printing block was Kachuwa Lobsang Samdrub. May this also benefit the teachings of the omniscient Victorious One and other beings! May it be auspicious! Word commentary on the eighth chapter of the Abhidharmakosha.
