In the grove with two Sala trees, the Blessed One resided, and at the time when he intended to show the manner of passing into Nirvana. He addressed the assembled monks, saying, "O monks, at the time when you are about to die, you should cultivate and manifest these eleven perceptions." After briefly indicating this, to explain in detail what these eleven perceptions are, he said, "The perception of non-attachment to this" up to "The perception that Nirvana is peace should be manifested." Having said that, if we explain the condensed meaning, these ten perceptions are: First, the perception of not being attached to worldly things and one's own belongings; second, focusing on all sentient beings, wishing that they may all have happiness, how wonderful it would be if they had happiness, the loving-kindness of making them have happiness; third, if there is a dispute with others, the perception of completely abandoning all thoughts of holding onto hatred; fourth, if in the past one has committed the ten non-virtuous actions and the four root downfalls, resulting in the fault of having broken vows, the perception of confessing all of these before the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and that one should confess; fifth, the perception of now also truly taking and protecting all the vows of abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions and protecting the four root vows, etc.; sixth, the perception of lightening the heavy faults such as the five heinous crimes and root downfalls; seventh, the perception that even a small virtuous root will produce great fruit; eighth, not having the fear of being afraid of what will happen in the next world; ninth, not to mention myself, the perception that all conditioned phenomena are also impermanent, decaying and changing; tenth, the perception that all phenomena, conditioned and unconditioned, are also selfless, without inherent existence; eleventh, the liberation of abandoning afflictions, the state of Nirvana is the peace of being free from harm. One should cultivate and manifest such a perception. Above it was said that at the time of death, one should have the perception of lessening and lightening great faults, and also have the perception of great merit for small virtuous roots, like this it is difficult for us to understand as it is, but the wisdom of the Buddha is reliable.

Therefore, it is important to pay attention and remember it well. These are not only for monks, but also for other people to practice at the time of death or before, the benefits are very great. Because these ten contain the essence or key points of the paths of both the Great and Small Vehicles. These are the instructions for the time of death spoken by the Bhagavan, so they need to be remembered at that time. Among them, cultivating loving-kindness, confessing sins, seeing all compounded things as impermanent, seeing all dharmas as selfless, and seeing nirvana as peaceful are to be cultivated constantly. The Victorious One, for Bodhisattvas and monks, at the time of death, taught the most needed beneficial advice, these two excellent Dharma essences. Guided by the faith of seeing this method as the heart essence, briefly explaining its meaning, the one who hears and thinks combines with faith. May the goodness of virtue arising from this, whenever the time of death comes, remembering these good paths, be reborn in the pure land after death, and quickly attain Buddhahood! The scribe up to this point is the monk Lodro Kunga, who is full of faith. Auspicious!
