Third, since all phenomena are by nature unobservable and luminous, one should cultivate the notion of not being attached to anything. That is to say, all phenomena such as the mind, as previously stated, are by nature established, and not even a particle is observable, and are as empty and clear as a clear sky. For example, just as the emptiness of the sky is obstructed by obstacles, all phenomena such as the mind are empty by nature, and these emptinesses are merely the objects that are negated by their own nature. Therefore, one should abandon the notion of clinging to the reality of any phenomenon, such as the mind and possessions, and cultivate the notion of non-attachment and true emptiness. Here, it is said from the perspective of cultivating emptiness, but in one of the commentaries on this, it says that all things are impermanent, so one should cultivate the notion of not being attached to anything. In general, all conditioned things are impermanent, and in particular, the objects of possessions that one owns and accumulates are impermanent and have the nature of exhaustion, so one should not be attached to them. It can also be understood in this way, but the direct intention of this treatise seems to be the former. Fourth, if one realizes that the mind is wisdom, then one should cultivate the notion of not seeking the Buddha elsewhere. If one realizes that the mind is wisdom, there are several different ways of interpreting this. Some say that this refers to seeing the clear and aware nature of one's own mind. Some believe that this refers to seeing the way the mind arises and ceases without dwelling in the second moment. Some believe that this refers to seeing the empty nature of the mind that naturally disappears. Some believe that this refers to seeing that the mind is not formed into color and shape. Some believe that this refers to seeing that there is no external object, and that all appearances are the nature of the mind. Others believe that this refers to seeing that the mind is empty by nature. Although there are many different views, the main one is based on the latter. In the Root Tantra of the Compendium, it says: One's own mind is originally unborn, it is the nature of emptiness. In the Eight Thousand Verses, it says: The mind has no mind, the nature of the mind is luminosity. Panchen Rinpoche's commentary on the Great Seal explains: The mind is established by its own nature

The mind does not exist; the nature of mind is clear light emptiness, so it is said. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it says that the mind of light protector cannot be found anywhere, and so on. Lord Marpa said, realize the unborn nature of the ground of reality, fix the mind in emptiness. There are many such examples. Thus, having realized that the nature of mind is emptiness, from the pure and undefiled stream of mind, one will obtain the wisdom of the fruit of Buddhahood. If one does not rely on one's own mind and seeks a Buddha to be obtained elsewhere, one will not find it. Thus, it is also said in the Lankavatara Sutra: The nature of mind that has abandoned conceptualization is the cessation of the consciousness of mind. In order to know all dharmas, I explain that mind is Buddha. So it is said, and below it says, mind is the cause of the arising of wisdom, do not seek the Buddha elsewhere. It is clear from this. Next is the concluding section. The Blessed One gave instructions in verse form, as an introduction, summarizing the four meanings explained earlier: Since all dharmas are naturally pure, meditate on the thought of no thingness. Being fully endowed with bodhicitta, meditate on the thought of great compassion. Since the nature is unobservable and clear light, meditate on not being attached to anything. Mind is the cause of the arising of wisdom, do not seek the Buddha elsewhere. So it is said, and the meaning is as previously explained. After that, the Blessed One gave such instructions, and so on, until the praise, which is easy to understand. These four dharmas are especially beneficial for bodhisattvas to practice at the time of death, while at other times they appear as the main part of practice during life. The so-called "wisdom of dying" refers, as before, to the wisdom of realizing that all dharmas are without self-nature, and this is used as a term for it. Or, "dying" refers to the wisdom to be practiced at the time of death, which refers to the four previously mentioned combined and explained. Second, explaining the meaning of the sutra on teaching the eleven perceptions. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the grove of twin sala trees in the city of Kushinagara. This indicates the place, namely, the wall temple in the city of auspicious grass.
