The Fifth Combination of Sounds, the Entrance to the Path of the Gods for the Wise and Knowledge-Seeking. The Fifth Combination of Sounds, the Entrance to the Path of the Gods for the Wise and Knowledge-Seeking. The Fifth Combination of Sounds, the Entrance to the Path of the Gods for the Wise and Knowledge-Seeking, is presented here. Homage to Mañjughoṣa). The very embodiment of the wisdom of all Buddhas, manifesting in the form of a supremely beautiful goddess, bestowing the supreme of intelligence even upon remembrance, I prostrate at the feet of the goddess of eloquence, Saraswati. May the rays of the sun of your compassion, O Protector, cause the lotus of my mind's discernment to blossom, and may I offer the nectar of your speech, the source of honey, to increase the delight of the clear-minded bees. Though the ocean of grammar is difficult to fathom, and a child of small intellect finds it difficult to cross freely, I shall take a drop of water with the tip of the banner of pride, may those who seek meaning be pleased. Here, I shall explain a little of the structure of the Fifth Combination, which is like a key to the elements of phonetics. In general, those who seek knowledge of culture, and those who desire liberation, must engage in learning the five sciences, including phonetics. If they do not engage, even if they are noble beings, they will not attain the wisdom of omniscience. As the venerable Maitreya said in the Ornament of the Sutras: If one does not strive in the five fields of knowledge, even the supreme noble ones will not become omniscient. Therefore, in order to subdue others and to follow, and in order to perfect oneself, one should strive in them. Thus it is said. The main aspect of phonetics is knowing Sanskrit, and so on. However, Tibetan orthography is also included in the category of phonetics. Although there are many texts that explain phonetics, here what will be explained is twofold: first, to explain mainly the meaning of the Fifth Combination that appears at the beginning of the phonetics text composed by the venerable Saraswati; and second, to explain by summarizing from the combinations of the Kalapa spoken by the six-faced youth. The first is: In the language of India: Svarasvati Vyākaraṇa Sūtraḥ. In the Tibetan language: The Sutra of Saraswati's Grammar. Homage to the noble Saraswati is easy to understand. Then, at the beginning of the Fifth Combination, when explaining the names and terms of each letter, the terms for vowels are: a, i, u, ṛ, ḷ, those that are similar, and so on.

ཨ་བོར་བ་ནཱ་མིའོ།(a bor ba nāmi'o)其中,ཨ་(a)短音被舍弃,除了它以外的元音都被称为ནཱ་མིའི་(nāmi'i)字母。 在ཨ་(a)字母等的后面放置ཧ་ས་(ha sa)所理解的是:ཨ་ཨི་ཨུ་རྀ་ལྀ་ཨེ་ཨཻ་ཨོ་ཨཽ།(a i u ṛ ḷ e ai o au)ཧ་ཡ་ཝ་ར་ལ།(ha ya va ra la)ཉ་ཎ་ན་ང་མ།(nya ṇa na nga ma)ཛྷ་ཌྷ་དྷ་གྷ་བྷ།(jha ḍha dha gha bha)ཛ་ཌ་ད་ག་པ་(ja ḍa da ga pa)等之间将ཨ་(a)和བ་(ba)分别组合称为ཨ་བ་(a ba)分别组合,ཙ་ཊ་ཏ་ཀ་པའི་(tsa ṭa ta ka pa'i)说出开始和结尾的两个字母,ཙ་པ་(tsa pa)分别组合,同样地,ཛྷ་ཌྷ་ངྷ་གྷ་བྷ་(jha ḍha dha gha bha)中ཛྷ་བྷ་(jha bha)分别组合,ཛ་ཌ་ད་ག་པ་(ja ḍa da ga pa)中ཛ་བ་(ja ba)分别组合等,通过说出组的开始和结尾的字母,就能理解中间的字母。
English
Thus it was said. Naming these as similar letters is for the sake of easy recognition of them later, and there are others as well. Those distinguished by short, long, and pluta are similar, meaning that for similar letters such as a, like a, ā, o, ña, etc., there are three each distinguished by short, long, and pūta durations, and two a's, etc., are similar to each other respectively. The remaining ones accomplished from the world are explained here, meaning that the remaining ones, such as measures, which are not directly explained here but are famous and accomplished in the world and other treatises, will also be explained here. That is, a, i, u, e, o, ṛ, ḷ, etc., which need to be recited in the duration of one blink of an eye, are short, and ā, ī, ū, etc., which need to be recited in the duration of two blinks of an eye, are long. Sum 'khyog pluta, which needs to be recited in the duration of three blinks of an eye, is very long. E ai, o au are combined letters. Those are called combined letters. These two are vowels. From a to sri, there are five groups, and e ai and o au four, totaling fourteen, which are called vowels. a bor ba nāmi'o. Among them, the short a is discarded, and vowels other than it are called nāmi'i letters. Then there is the indication of consonants: ha ya va ra la. nya ṇa na nga ma. jha ḍha dha gha bha. ja ṭa da ga ba. kha pha tsha ṭha tha. tsa ṭa ta ka pa. sha ṣa sa. Indicating with the beginning and the end, etc., means that by merely uttering the two letters of the beginning and the end, the intermediate letters can be understood, for example, by saying ha sa, all the consonants can be understood. What is understood by placing ha sa after the a letter, etc., is: a i u ṛ ḷ e ai o au. ha ya va ra la. nya ṇa na nga ma. jha ḍha dha gha bha. ja ḍa da ga pa, etc., combining a and ba separately is called combining a ba separately, and by mentioning the two letters of the beginning and the end of tsa ṭa ta ka pa'i, tsa pa is combined separately, similarly, in jha ḍha dha gha bha, jha bha is combined separately, and in ja ḍa da ga pa, ja ba is combined separately, etc., by mentioning the letters of the beginning and the end of the group, the intermediate letters can be understood. Ha sa are all the consonants. The consonant letters from ha to sa mentioned earlier are called ha sa'i letters. What disappears from vowels is consonants. Ha sa combined separately.
