Then, gathering the various scattered (teachings), unite them here. Just by writing down the praise and the vow to explain, the earth shook, bright light shone, and a great sound arose. The non-Buddhist teachers showed many extraordinary signs, such as their arms becoming stiff like wood. At that time, there was a non-Buddhist teacher named Black Victory nearby, who observed with subtle prescience and learned of its power. Due to jealousy, he went to the path where the teacher Sonam went for alms and erased (the words written by the teacher) twice. The teacher wrote a third time and wrote at the end: Who is it that erases the verses I have written? If it is for the sake of jest and mockery, because there is a great need, then do not erase. If it is out of jealousy, because it is in the mind, it cannot be erased. If you can endure the error of arguing, then manifest your body, and we shall debate. Again, the signs appeared as before, and upon returning, he saw the words "we shall debate" and sat down. The teacher Sonam returned and, meeting him, established the victory of Buddhism. Through debate, he defeated the non-Buddhists two or three times. The teacher said: Now enter the Buddhist teachings. The man, enraged, spewed fire from his mouth and burned all the teacher's belongings. The teacher was almost burned as well and felt very sad. He thought: Originally, I wanted to benefit all sentient beings, but I cannot even benefit this one non-Buddhist. I should just realize my own peace and happiness. Thinking this, he threw lime powder into the sky, thinking: Before it lands, I will abandon bodhicitta. Before it landed, Manjushri himself appeared and said: Child, do not do this, do not do this. Encountering an inferior vehicle only gives rise to bad wisdom. Know that this treatise of yours cannot be harmed by non-Buddhist groups. Until you attain the ground, I will become your virtuous friend. In future times, this treatise will become one eye for all treatises. Some tell the story of being embraced in this way. From Dharmottara's commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, it is known that when the teacher Dignāga was dwelling in a secluded mountain cave, diligently meditating, at some point, he became weary of samsara and wanted to turn away from benefiting sentient beings, wanting to liberate alone.

Then, in that instant, the noble Manjushri appeared and said, 'Child, you are in harmony with evil people, dominated by others due to cowardice, and although you have the ability to benefit all sentient beings, why do you remain indifferent?' He replied, 'Bhagavan, samsara is filled with many unbearable sufferings, I cannot endure it, and my mind also delights in unkind people, behaving frivolously. Even if you appear, if you do not bless me, what can I do?' He replied, 'Child, until you attain the ground, your spiritual friend is none other than myself.' Having said this, he disappeared. It is said that in the commentary of Kashmiri Jnana Shri, it says, 'Until you attain Buddhahood.' That teacher composed the 'Compendium on Valid Cognition' with its auto-commentary, subdued all the heretics, and caused the doctrine to flourish. His disciple, the teacher Ishvarasena, was an expert in the five sciences, and also composed a commentary on the 'Compendium.' His disciple Dharmakirti was born in the southern part of India in a place called Rajavani, as a Brahmin of the Tirthika lineage. He became well-versed in grammar from a young age. He took the vows of a Tirthika Brahmin from his uncle, the Tirthika teacher Yuvanamalin. His uncle scolded him and drove him away. The teacher thought, 'I should become someone who can defeat all the Tirthikas.' So he became a Buddhist monk and studied diligently. In particular, he vowed to listen to the teacher Ishvarasena teach the 'Compendium on Valid Cognition' three times. When he listened the first time, he understood the intention of the teacher Ishvarasena. When he listened the second time, he understood the intention of Dignaga, realizing that Ishvarasena's view was mistaken. When he requested to be taught a third time, Ishvarasena said, 'Dignaga had no student like me, and I have had no student like you. There is no tradition of teaching more than once, but I have already taught twice. Teaching this alone will not benefit you. I have other Pandit activities to do, so prepare the oiled cloth, and I will teach at night.' Having done so, he understood even more deeply the distinction between cause and effect, and became a student.
