The way to accumulate merit. The way to accumulate merit. Secondly, there are three ways to accumulate merit: identifying the merit to be accumulated; the duration of accumulation; and the manner of accumulation. These three. Firstly, the nature of merit, its combination with the Paramitas, definition, action, method of accomplishment, fruit, purpose, and classification by way of categories, are eight aspects. The first is, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: The merit of Bodhisattvas, is incomparable to fortune and wisdom. One causes manifest higher realms in Samsara, the other revolves without afflictions. Therefore, the virtue that becomes the cause of manifest higher realms and definite goodness, with outflows and without outflows, is the nature of merit. Secondly: Giving and discipline are the accumulations of merit, wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom, the other three are both, all five are also the accumulation of wisdom. So it is said. Thirdly: Having obtained constant meditation, virtuous deeds are also repeatedly accomplished. So it is said. In Sanskrit (Tibetan: སཾ་སྐྲི་ཏ་,Devanagari: संस्कृत,Romanized Sanskrit: saṃskṛta, literal meaning: Sanskrit), Sambhara (Tibetan: སཾ་བྷ་ར་,Devanagari: संभार,Romanized Sanskrit: saṃbhāra, literal meaning: accumulation) is merit, Santana (Tibetan: སཾ་ཏ་ན་,Devanagari: संतन,Romanized Sanskrit: saṃtana, literal meaning: continuity) is constant, Bhavana (Tibetan: བྷ་ཝ་ན་,Devanagari: भावना,Romanized Sanskrit: bhāvanā, literal meaning: cultivation) is meditation, Rati (Tibetan: ར་ཏི་,Devanagari: रति,Romanized Sanskrit: rati, literal meaning: delight) is repeatedly, that is, obtaining repeated meditation without interruption, is merit. Fourthly: The stable merit, accomplishes all purposes. So it is said. Fifthly: For the sake of entering, being without signs, spontaneous accomplishment, empowerment, and ultimate purpose, the stable ones accomplish merit. So it is said. By the stage of faith and practice, from the first to the sixth stage, the seventh stage, the eighth and ninth stages, the merit of the tenth stage, in order, for the sake of entering the stage, the seventh stage being without signs, the eighth stage being spontaneously accomplished, the tenth stage being empowered, and for the ultimate purpose in the Buddha stage, it is accomplished. Sixthly: As stated in the Precious Garland: The form body of the Buddhas, is born from the accumulation of merit, the Dharma body, in brief, is born from the accumulation of wisdom. So it is said. And as stated in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: May the two excellent ones, born from merit and wisdom, be obtained. So it is said. This is taught from the main aspect of the cause, in the ordinary way, both are also the result of the two accumulations. Seventhly: The purpose of the accumulation of merit is the conventional truth, or the nature of as many as there are, the purpose of the accumulation of wisdom

It is observing the true meaning of the object, or rather, being as it is. Eighth, there are about twelve methods of classification. First, according to the Mahayana view, there are two: skillful means and wisdom, namely, cutting off attachment to characteristics is wisdom, and accumulating roots of virtue is skillful means. The *Gaya Gori Sutra* says, "Skillful means is knowing how to accumulate, and wisdom is knowing how to observe." Therefore, wisdom focuses on and realizes emptiness, and skillful means benefits sentient beings with compassion, so it is said that emptiness has the essence of compassion. The second is that the six perfections summarize all virtuous dharmas and perfect the Dharma of Buddhahood. As it is said, "All pure white dharmas should be known as scattered, and also as equipoise. The two perfections and two, the two are well-held." It also says, "Not rejoicing in manifest enjoyment, and not being weary of great respect, yoga does not distinguish, all Mahayana ends here." Thus, it is said that all Mahayana is contained in the six perfections. So, do Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas not have the six perfections? No. The *Mahayana-samgraha Commentary* says, "Like rhinoceros horns, they do not even have the name of the six perfections, only the Bhagavan abides in the aggregate of the six perfections." So, is it clear that the Sravaka Pitaka also explains the practice of the six perfections and so on? That is only a slight explanation, how can it be said to be completely perfect? The *Ratnavali* says, "From the Sravaka Vehicle, the aspiration of the Bodhisattva, and the practice and complete dedication are not explained, how can he become a Bodhisattva?" Also, the *Sutra Ornament* says, "Incomplete and contradictory, and not expedient, therefore it is not said, therefore this Sravaka Vehicle is not called the Dharma of the Mahayana." Third, classifying from the perspective of the grounds. The *Ratnavali* says, "As in the Sravaka Vehicle, it is said that there are eight grounds of Sravakas, so in the Mahayana, there are ten grounds of Bodhisattvas." Or the *Seventy Verses on the Three Refuges* says, "As the Arhat's exhaustion of knowledge, the seven grounds are the precursors, so the perfect Buddha's knowledge, the ten grounds are the precursors." Therefore, Sravakas have the ground of pure vision and the ground of lineage, etc.
