Just as oiling, massaging, and warming are done. Similarly, the mind is also tamed by hearing, thinking, and meditating. Therefore, in order to make the mind workable, one should strive in hearing and so on. Those who travel on the path by the power of these three will easily cross the wilderness path, by the power of provisions for the road, the power of the mount, and the power of the guide. Similarly, those who go on the path of ease from the wilderness path of samsara do so by the power of generosity, discipline, and wisdom. Here, all three depend on hearing. Secondly, the sutra says that these ten are the ways in which a Bodhisattva fully seeks the Dharma. What are the ten? Seeking the Dharma fully with a firm mind, without deceit or pretense, and so on. Thirdly, in the Great Commentary, it says, "One should listen with superior intention," which means to put aside hats and so on, sit on a low seat, eliminate the fault of distraction, and listen to the sacred Dharma with the intention of desiring liberation. Secondly, even if such characteristics are not complete, if one listens and is able to understand the meaning, there is great benefit. In the Explanation of Reasoning, it says: Those who have accumulated merit will have great merit by listening a little. For example, when the noble Shariputra showed a Brahmin how to receive ordination, the Brahmin heard it and hid to listen. After hearing that "a renunciate who breaks his vows will suffer twelve kinds of suffering," he turned away from actions that were clearly inclined towards promiscuity. Furthermore, when the monastic guardian taught the Dharma, the hermits listened like pigs, and thus obtained the fruit. Thirdly, even if one does not understand the meaning, if one listens with faith in the Dharma, there is great merit. As it is said: Even if one does not understand the language, one should listen to the Buddha's words with respect. In this way, just by listening with faith, one will have great merit, and the seed of wisdom will grow. If one understands the meaning, what need is there to say? The example of the cowherd Gapo pressing a frog with a stick can be used as an example. Also, when Dharma Delight became a crocodile, just hearing the sound of the Buddha

Previously, one was merely accustomed to prostrating. It was because one remained silent. Therefore, even by hearing a little, through accumulating resources, in order for virtue to greatly increase, one should diligently listen to the Buddha's words. Thus it is said. Secondly, in the Bodhisattva Pitaka, it is said: What causes sentient beings to transform? There are two causes and two conditions, namely, following the sound of others, and inwardly, proper attention. As it is said, therefore, the external condition is to rely on virtuous spiritual friends and accumulate the necessities of life, and the internal favorable condition is to listen attentively, contemplate the meaning of what is heard, study sutras and treatises, and cultivate by questioning the wise. By this, hearing will reach its culmination, and then one should strive in contemplation and meditation. In the Commentary on Reasoning, it is said: Just as a stone of stone ash is burned by fire and destroyed by water, so too, the stone of the latent tendencies of afflictions, when completely burned by the fire of wisdom and completely soaked by the water of samadhi, will be destroyed. That wisdom also cannot arise without hearing the sacred Dharma, therefore, one should respectfully listen to the Dharma. Even if one carries the burden of words, if one does not clearly understand the meaning, one will not obtain its meaning, just as a child has a will for treasure hung around his neck. Therefore, even with much learning, one should diligently listen to the meaning of the sutras in order to understand the meaning. Not discriminating each grain of rice is like saying one is not sleeping, yet one is robbed by thieves. Similarly, much learning that focuses only on sound, without discrimination, will also be destroyed by the enemies of afflictions. That discrimination also does not exist without understanding the meaning. Therefore, one should strive to grasp the meaning. Similarly, it can be exemplified that a musician, fearing thieves, sings in order not to sleep, but is robbed. Just as a blind person holding a torch is helpful to others, so too, holding onto hearing without clearly understanding the meaning is the same, therefore, in order to understand the meaning, one should diligently listen to the meaning. Thus it is said. The three are the preliminary, the actual, and the concluding practices. Among the first of the three, the first is the intention to practice the Dharma, as it is said, the [benefit of] hearing...
