Third, the differences in how disciples listen. Third, the differences in how disciples listen. Thirdly, the person who listens with what, the method of relying on what to listen, and the way of how to listen, these three. Firstly, there are three types of listeners: superior, middling, and inferior. The first is, in terms of classification, abandoning the faults of the listener and explaining the characteristics of the listener to be accomplished. In the first aspect, abandoning thirteen, six, and three faults. The first is, in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is said that to counteract the thirteen faults, one should listen to the Dharma in sixteen ways. The thirteen faults are: when abiding truly in the mind, driving the speaker oneself; the fault of improper conduct; the fault of arrogance due to high lineage; the fault of not seeking meaning; the fault of being resentful due to favoring others; the fault of not respecting the speaker because of not making offerings; the fault of having the intention to refute at any opportunity; the fault of not being respectful because of not contemplating the qualities of the Dharma and the speaker; for the Dharma, thinking that the words and letters are unrelated, for the speaker, thinking of faults such as incomplete discipline, lineage, appearance, and expression, and thus the fault of contempt; the fault of slander; the fault of desiring gain and respect; the fault of not listening because the mind is distracted and controlled by sleep and drowsiness; the fault of not thinking carefully because of thinking about the meaning and nature of Dharma in a reversed way; and the fault of not thinking carefully due to weak intention and engagement. The second is, as it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Arrogance and disbelief, not seeking meaning, external distraction and internal absorption, and weariness are the stains of listening." Or it could be the fault of karma, the fault of lack of faith, the fault of not making offerings, the fault of intention, the fault of disharmony, and the fault of attachment. Among the faults of karma, the karma of the body is improper conduct, the karma of both body and speech is not being motivated by both, and the karma of mind is not wanting to listen. The fault of intention is seeking the faults of others, and the intention to be liberated from this kind of debate.

The five faults of disharmony are: not respecting the Dharma because it is understood as not being the path to liberation; slandering because the words and letters are disconnected; not respecting due to faults of the person, discipline, and the speaker; and despising due to faults of lineage. Thinking that one does not have the ability to understand and practice is despising oneself. The five faults of grasping are: wrong grasping, not grasping the meaning, not grasping the words, grasping without encountering the terminology, and not grasping completely. Thirdly, for example, even if it rains, three faults of the vessel will occur, causing it not to perform the function of water: it will not enter because it is upside down or covered; it will become defective even if it enters because it is unclean; and it will not remain even if it enters because it has holes. Similarly, even if the rain of Dharma falls, there will be three faults that prevent it from performing the function of the water of Dharma: distraction and drowsiness prevent listening, so it does not enter; not attending properly to the mind, so it becomes defective even if it enters; and because of forgetfulness, it does not remain. As an antidote to this, the Bhagavan said, "Listen well and keep it in mind!" Furthermore, a patient not understanding the doctor's prescription, or understanding it wrongly, or even understanding it correctly but throwing away the medicine, and a patient not eating medicine, or eating unsuitable food, or vomiting after eating suitable food, these three situations correspond in order. Therefore, if the speaker is skilled in taming the audience, when the audience is distracted, he should say some discouraging words, such as, "People's lives are only a hundred years, half of which is spent sleeping at night, and half of that is spent sleeping during the day." For those who are drowsy, in order to clear their minds, he should tell strange stories, or stories about donkeys and foals, or lions and foxes, or old women and women, or old women and thieves, or stories of crying when the body is born, and tell some joyful stories. Secondly, the Four Hundred says, "One who is impartial, intelligent, and seeks meaning is said to be a vessel for listening." That is, having the intelligence to be able to understand, having the desire to seek meaning, and having respect without arrogance. The first point is that listening can serve as an antidote to afflictions and become a cause for liberation, so it is necessary to understand the meaning. Vasubandhu said, "Through three causes, leather can be made usable."
