The practice of transference of consciousness. The practice of transference of consciousness. The common transference. The transference through peaceful thought. Third, the subsequent guidance has four parts: the transference of consciousness, the bardo guidance, the secret guidance, and the guidance on practice. First, the transference of consciousness has two aspects: the common transference and the uncommon transference. First, the common transference has five aspects: the transference through peaceful thought, the transference through ten perceptions, the transference through union with the yidam deity, the transference through the blessing of the lama, and the transference through the recollection of the Three Jewels. First, the transference through peaceful thought: At the time of death, it is crucial that there is nothing that causes attachment or hatred, whether sentient or insentient, that can be seen by the eyes or heard by the ears. If one dies in a state of mind where attachment and hatred are pacified, one will be reborn as a god. In the "Stainless Light Sutra," it says: Here, at the time of death, due to the power of virtuous deeds, one will transform into a peaceful state of mind, which is the nature of the quality of courage. If that state of mind arises, one will ultimately be reborn as a god after death. This is the meaning of the sutra. The transference through ten perceptions. Second, the transference through ten perceptions: In the "Sutra on the Ten Perceptions," the Blessed One taught: Monks, at the time of death, you should manifest the ten perceptions of a monk. What are these ten perceptions? The perception of not being attached to this life, the perception of having love for all sentient beings, the perception of abandoning all grudges, the perception of confessing all violations of vows, the perception of restoring all vows correctly, the perception of considering great misdeeds as minor, the perception of considering small roots of virtue as great, the perception of longing for the next world, the perception that all compounded things are impermanent, the perception that all phenomena are without self, and the manifestation of the perception of the peace of nirvana. This is the meaning of the sutra. The transference through union with the yidam deity. The transference through union with the yidam deity: At the time of death, for all sentient and insentient things, abandon attachment and hatred, and instantly remember and perfect the yidam deity. Without being distracted by anything else, remain with devotion and focus single-mindedly on that yidam deity.
