The Third Chapter: The Practice of the Four Times. The Third Chapter: The Practice of the Four Times. For a practitioner, concerning a single suitable individual, there are three aspects to practicing in accordance with the four times of a single day and night: the key points of the four times, the key points of the four winds, and utilizing the two kayas as the path. Firstly, dawn is the time of pacification, morning is the time of increase, afternoon is the time of subjugation, and dusk is the time of action. Therefore, all activities of practice should be in accordance with the four times. Accomplishing peaceful activities at dawn will lead to success, increasing activities in the morning, subjugating activities in the afternoon, and performing activities at dusk. The key is not to miss the timing. Even just at dawn, whatever practice, action, or activity is done should be in accordance with the four times. The same applies to morning and so on. Furthermore, if the four times are calculated based on a single instant of thought, then divide the thought into four parts: the initial uncertainty of the thought is pacification; once it is certain, the coarse thought is increase; the thoughts of the past and future are not mixed, and it is under one's own control, which is subjugation; the completion of the action of that thought is action. Calculating the four times based on the object of the senses: for example, calculating the four times for a single form or sound, etc.: taking form as an example, at the time of clearly seeing the form, the essence or characteristic of the form is uncertain, which is pacification; establishing the state of the form as it is, is increase; manifesting whether that form is good or bad, is subjugation; the appearance of attachment and aversion is action. Therefore, for both thought and object, if pacification and increase are manifested in the four times of thought, then the activities must be accomplished through subjugation and action. The mind follows thought and object, and thought and object follow the mind. These two are: knowing thought as mind is subjugation; experiencing thought as Mahamudra is action. The mind following the object is: clearly seeing the form is the mind's subjugation; experiencing Mahamudra within that is action. Controlling the mind with thought and object is: the good or bad of thought manifests as good or bad in the mind, thus thought controls the mind. The mind appearing as attachment and aversion is action. Because of the beauty or ugliness of form, the mind appears as liking and disliking, thus form controls the mind.

The activities arise from disliking ugliness and hating it, and from liking beauty and being attached to it. What is the reason for the appearance of peace and so on in the early morning? Because at midnight, appearances cease, and one enters deep sleep, appearing as the empty, clear light of non-appearance. Although there are differences in the length of night and day in a single day, even if there is only one day, the night is also the same. Because one does not eat during the night, the channels are empty, and therefore the wind remains peaceful. Because one does not practice the pure mind of enlightenment, the afflictive thoughts in the mind subside, and even when one wakes up in the early morning, one remains in a state of peace due to the aftereffects of these things, which is the reason for the appearance of peace. The reason for the appearance of increase in the morning is that after eating, the channels are filled with essence, the wind moves strongly, the afflictions and thoughts of the mind increase, and all that is seen and heard becomes manifest, so it is increase. The reason for the appearance of power in the afternoon is that the object and the subject become inseparable due to self-grasping, the object controls the subject, and the subject controls the object, so it is power. The reason why dusk is the time for manifest action is that all virtuous and non-virtuous actions and activities are completed in a single day, so it is the time when all activities are accomplished. Accumulating the white collection of virtue in three periods is also transformed and accomplished through dedication and aspiration. Because all the power of virtue is completely perfected, if one performs the manifest action of its powerful energy, it will be accomplished. When performing the activities of pacifying, increasing, subjugating, and wrathful, one sits with the legs in the vajra posture. For pacifying, the left hand is in the meditation mudra, and the right hand is in the earth-touching mudra. For increasing, the left hand is the same as before, and the right hand is in the varada mudra. For subjugating, one sits in a squatting position, the two hands gather the four continents, and hold them to the chest in an embracing manner, the body sits still without moving, majestic with joy. For wrathful, the legs are crossed like a checkerboard, the two elbows are placed on the knees, the fists are extended, and the two hands are crossed to form a triple triangle, sitting in the posture of a crowned universal monarch, and the mind should be in accordance with each of the four times. This indicates the key of the times. Secondly, the key to indicating the wind is that the water wind flows in the morning, which is the time of peace, and the earth wind flows in the morning, which is the time of increase.
