It should not be mixed with weapons, and it needs to be excellent and pleasing. Pure intention is not for the sake of this life's glory, or reward, or fearful dispatch, but it needs to be the single intention of desiring to attain unsurpassed Bodhi. Thus, if those roots of virtue, which are encompassed by the three purities, were to become corporeal, they would not even fit in the realm of space. Second, there are three aspects to where to dedicate: inferior dedication, wrong dedication, and supreme dedication. Among them, inferior dedication is: wishing to obtain perfect enjoyment in this life, or wishing to obtain a one-sided Nirvana-like state of Hearers and Solitary Realizers in the next life, or if one is a god, wishing to obtain a state like Brahma and Indra, or if one is a human, wishing to obtain a state like a Universal Monarch, and so on. This is inferior dedication, and one should not dedicate to it. Wrong dedication is: like dedicating by saying, "May King Ajatashatru kill his father," one should not dedicate to that. Here, the dedication is supreme, dedicating to the attainment of unsurpassed precious Bodhi for the benefit of all sentient beings. Just as when white rice has a good harvest, chaff and the like naturally occur as a byproduct, when unsurpassed Bodhi is attained, the bliss of goddesses will also naturally occur as a byproduct. Third, the master of dedication is: if a Bhikshu dedicates with pure discipline, he has power over dedication; if a Yogi dedicates with a mind that has attained mastery, he has power over dedication; if one who possesses Bodhicitta dedicates, he has power over dedication. Fourth is: how or by what method should one dedicate? If one dedicates after having done some roots of virtue, it will be accomplished. If one dedicates by reciting the dedication three times, it will be accomplished. If one dedicates without focusing on the three—dedication, the dedicator, and the master of dedication—and without characteristics, it will be accomplished. Thus, in the "Noble Compendium Sutra," it is said: "If one focuses on characteristics, that is not dedication. If one is without characteristics, that is Bodhi dedication." It also says: "Field, object, and thought, combine the three and pray." Thus, in ultimate truth, dedication and the dedicator, etc., are unobtainable, but in conventional illusion, using the roots of virtue as a symbol, all the virtues of the three times, for the benefit of all beings, I

Having resolved to attain the state of precious Bodhi and to establish all sentient beings in that state, follow along with an undistracted mind: May all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas heed me. May the teacher heed me. I, named so-and-so, in this life and in other lives, whatever roots of virtue have arisen from generosity, arisen from discipline, arisen from meditation, whatever I have done, caused to be done, or rejoiced in, and also in this present moment, offering to the Three Jewels, offering flowers to the teacher, serving the Sangha, building Tathagata stupas, proclaiming the Dharma, writing and reciting the Prajnaparamita, offering torma to spirits, giving alms to people, and so forth, all these roots of virtue, gathering them together and uniting them, combining them into a supreme offering, the ornament of the mind, the equipment of the mind, the assembly of yoga, becoming the supreme of meanings, for the sake of all beings, with father, mother, and spiritual friends leading the way, may I dedicate them to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Bodhi. May all sentient beings quickly attain great Bodhi. Thus, following along, dedicate three times. If dedicating for the deceased, the one dedicating should first arise with great compassion and request the noble Lamas of the three times and all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to heed me. May the noble Lamas of the three times and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas bless my speech to be powerful, bless my aspiration to be firm. Thus pray. After that, may the Lamas of the three times and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and the deceased so-and-so heed me. May the Sangha, and the deceased so-and-so heed me. The deceased so-and-so, in this life, other lives,
