The Profound Dharma of Self-Liberation through Contemplation in the Bardo. The Profound Dharma of Self-Liberation through Contemplation in the Bardo. From the Profound Dharma of the Peaceful and Wrathful Deities, Self-Liberation through Intention, the third general topic from the Six Bardos of the Completion Stage instructions is entitled "Self-Liberation through Contemplation in the Bardo." This teaches the third general topic, "Self-Liberation through Contemplation in the Bardo," which is an instruction like a beautiful maiden looking into a mirror, clarifying what is unclear. Previously, awareness was introduced and shown to be "this alone," so the mind clearly became fixated on awareness. However, because it became fixated on that alone, liberation is not possible. Therefore, here, after recognition, one cultivates the state of non-fixation and transcendence of mind, and the instruction on contemplation enhances its power. Because it liberates the fixation on awareness, it is called the instruction on "Self-Liberation through Awareness." It is not enough to have been introduced and to have recognized one's own nature. For example, if one's own wild horse has been left untamed for many years, the owner does not recognize it. Even if a herdsman identifies it and one recognizes it, it is still not enough. Just as one needs to catch and tame the wild horse with skill, it is not enough to merely recognize this wild mind. Alas! When the Bardo of Contemplation dawns for me, having abandoned the gatherings of distraction and confusion, I enter the state of non-distraction, non-fixation, and freedom from extremes. As it says, a beginner must cultivate and meditate with unwavering mindfulness. Just as one must tame a wild horse with unwavering diligence, if one is distracted, the horse will run away and crash, leading to ruin. Here too, if a beginner is distracted, conceptual thoughts will run wild, leading to a fall into the lower realms and ruin. Therefore, one should seek to meditate with unwavering mindfulness. What is called meditation is the supreme state of not meditating on anything. But in reality, it is to abide in the contemplation of churning the three skies. From the Tantra of the Three Words, "Liberation upon Seeing": Kye! Lord of Secrets! If one practices the Dharmakaya, it is the instruction of churning the three skies. The outer sky is this empty space. The inner sky is the empty channel connecting the eye and the heart. The secret sky is the palace of one's own precious heart. Direct your own awareness to the eye, direct the eye to space, the eye...

By directing [consciousness] towards space and remaining [there], wisdom arises freely. When one's own eyes are directed towards awareness, without being obscured by any conceptual thoughts, pure non-conceptual awareness dawns. Thus it is said. Therefore, the actual practice of meditation is: with the body in the seven-point posture of Vairocana, the meditation called "sky gazing," which is directing the emptiness of one's own mind towards the empty central channel, the channel of movement, like a "distant water lamp." Direct awareness towards the eyes, and gazing with the eyes at the empty outer space, without focusing awareness on anything in the space in front, and without anything to meditate on, simply remain without distraction, wide open, clearly, naturally, and openly. At first, practice in short sessions. Having become accustomed, practice for longer and longer periods. When ending the session, do not rise abruptly, but without losing the experience of meditation, rise slowly, and without losing the state of awareness, walk in a state of non-distraction and non-attachment. Eating, drinking, speaking, whatever activity you do, maintain the awareness of non-distraction without losing it. If you can do this in meditative equipoise, but not in post-meditation, then mix whatever you do—religious practice, walking, standing, lying down, sitting—with meditation, so that whatever you do arises as meditation. The scripture says: "When meditating, do not meditate on anything, because in the realm of reality there is nothing to meditate on." And the Kunjed Gyalpo says: "Alas, alas, teacher Kunjed, my prophecy is that all is unborn, pure samadhi; whether to meditate or not depends entirely on circumstances. All phenomena that appear as objects of meditation, wherever and however they are placed, without searching, leaving them in their natural state is meditation." And: "O courageous one, become accustomed to the meaning of reality! If the awareness of the secret meaning does not arise, then clinging to words and sounds will not meet with my prophecy." And: "Do not think about anything, do not meditate, do not manipulate the three doors, but remain relaxed. There are no planets, stars, dates, times; do not hold anything in mind, and be free from mantras and mudras." Thus it is said. Therefore, it is very important to lead that meditation of equipoise into the post-meditation period, maintaining the experience of equipoise without losing it in post-meditation. In particular, whatever conceptual thoughts arise, let them arise and dissolve, dissolve naturally, loosely, and without grasping. The nature of conceptual thoughts
