Venerable sir, it was laid down concerning many bhikkhus. Venerable sir, many bhikkhus drank milk making 'suru-suru' sounds. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. And for one licking the hand while eating, and for one licking the bowl while eating, and for one licking the lips while eating, the offense of wrong-doing was laid down in Sāvatthī. Venerable sir, it was laid down concerning the group of six bhikkhus. Venerable sir, the group of six bhikkhus licked their hands. They licked their bowls. They licked their lips. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. And for one receiving a water-pot with a food-stained hand, and bowl-washing water with grains of rice inside For one throwing into a house, a dukkaṭa is laid down in the sections. It was laid down concerning many bhikkhus. Many bhikkhus with hands soiled with food received a water-bowl. Those very many bhikkhus, venerable sir, threw rice-mixed bowl-water inside the house. It was laid down, venerable sir, concerning that matter. Question – Friend, due to disrespect, for one teaching Dhamma to a person with an umbrella in hand, or to one with a staff in hand, or with a knife in hand, or with a weapon in hand, for one teaching Dhamma, where was the dukkaṭa laid down? Concerning whom, concerning what matter was it laid down? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was laid down concerning the group of six bhikkhus. The group of six bhikkhus, venerable sir, taught Dhamma to a person with an umbrella in hand, to one with a staff in hand, to one with a knife in hand, to one with a weapon in hand. Question – Friend, due to disrespect, for one teaching Dhamma to a person sitting with legs crossed, and to one with a head wrapped, and to one with a head covered, and to one sitting on a seat after sitting on the ground, and to one sitting on a high seat after sitting on a low seat, and to one sitting while the teacher is standing, and to one walking in front while the teacher is walking behind, and to one walking off the path while the teacher is walking on the path, for one teaching Dhamma, where was the dukkaṭa laid down? Concerning whom, concerning what matter was it laid down? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was laid down concerning the group of six bhikkhus. The group of six bhikkhus, venerable sir, taught Dhamma to a person sitting with legs crossed, and to one with a wrapped head, and to one with a covered head, and having sat on the ground, to one sitting on a seat, and having sat on a low seat, to one sitting on a high seat, and to one standing, to one sitting, and going behind, to one going in front, and going on a wrong path, to one going on the right path, they taught the Dhamma. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – Friend, due to disrespect, by one standing, making urine or feces, and in greenery or in water, making urine or feces or spittle, where was the dukkata laid down? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning the group of six bhikkhus, it was laid down. The group of six bhikkhus, venerable sir, stood and made urine and feces. Those very group of six bhikkhus, venerable sir, in greenery and in water, made urine and feces and spittle. Concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning the bhikkhunī Sundarīnandā, it was laid down. The bhikkhunī Sundarīnandā, venerable sir, being lustful, indulged in bodily contact with a lustful man. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. Bhikkhunīvibhaṅga, Question on the Saṅghādisesa training rule Question – Friend, where was the Saṅghādisesa laid down for a bhikkhunī who is a slanderer, causing trouble? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, it was laid down. The bhikkhunī Thullanandā, venerable sir, lived as a slanderer. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – Friend, where was the Saṅghādisesa laid down for one who ordains a thief? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning Thull was laid down concerning the nun Thullanandā. Venerable sir, the nun Thullanandā ordained a thief. It was laid down concerning that matter, venerable sir. Question: Friends, where was the Saṅghādisesa laid down for a nun going alone to another village? Concerning whom was it laid down, concerning what matter? Answer: Venerable sir, it was laid down concerning a certain nun in Sāvatthī. Venerable sir, a certain nun went alone to another village. It was laid down concerning that matter, venerable sir. Question: Friends, where was the Saṅghādisesa laid down for a lustful nun who, with her own hand, received and ate food or edibles from the hand of a lustful man? Concerning whom was it laid down, concerning what matter? Answer: Venerable sir, it was laid down concerning the nun Sundarīnandā in Sāvatthī. Venerable sir, the nun Sundarīnandā, being lustful, received a delicacy from the hand of a lustful man. It was laid down concerning that matter, venerable sir. Question: Friends, where was the Saṅghādisesa laid down for an angry, displeased nun who, when admonished for the third time, did not desist? Concerning whom was it laid down, concerning what matter? Answer: Venerable sir, it was laid down concerning the nun Caṇḍakāḷī in Sāvatthī. Venerable sir, the nun Caṇḍakāḷī, being angry and displeased, spoke thus: "I renounce the Buddha, I renounce the Dhamma, I renounce the Saṅgha, I renounce the training. What are these recluses, these recluses, daughters of the Sakyas? There are other recluses who are modest, scrupulous, desirous of training. I will lead the holy life in their presence." It was laid down concerning that matter, venerable sir. Question: Friends, whose word is this? Answer: Venerable sir, it is the word of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. Question: Friends, by whom was it brought? Sixth Training Question Question – Where, friend, was the rule of offense concerning a bhikkhunī who attends upon a bhikkhu who is eating, with food or drink or a fan, promulgated? Concerning whom was it promulgated, and in what matter? Answer – It was promulgated in Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning a certain bhikkhunī. Tenth Training Question Question – Where, friend, was the rule of offense concerning one who goes to see dancing or singing or instrumental music, promulgated? Concerning whom was it promulgated, and in what matter? Answer – It was promulgated in Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning the group of six bhikkhunīs. The group of six bhikkhunīs, venerable sir, went to see dancing and singing and instrumental music. In that matter, venerable sir, it was promulgated. Question – But, friend, for a bhikkhu, dancing or singing Going to see that (dance) or music, what offense does one incur? Answer – One incurs an offense of wrong-doing, venerable sir. 1. First training question Question – Friend, in the dark of night, without a lamp, for a bhikkhuni standing alone with a man, where was the pācittiya rule laid down? Concerning whom, on what occasion was it laid down? Answer – Venerable sir, it was laid down at Sāvatthī concerning a certain bhikkhuni.
