Answer – Then, venerable sir, Venerable Raṭṭhapāla Thera first elaborated and explained the teaching, beginning with: “What do you think, great king? When you were twenty or twenty-five years old, were you skilled in elephants, skilled in horses, skilled in chariots, skilled in archery, skilled in swordsmanship, strong in thigh, strong in arm, sufficiently capable of battle?” Question – How then, friend, did the venerable Elder Raṭṭhapāla to King Korabya the second discourse on Dhamma expound and make known? Answer – “What do you think, great king, do you have any lingering ailment?” In this way, venerable sir, the venerable Raṭṭhapāla to King Korabya the second discourse on Dhamma expounded and made known. Question – How then, friend, did the venerable Elder Raṭṭhapāla to King Korabya the third discourse on Dhamma expound and make known? Answer – “What do you think, great king, just as you now with the five strands of sensual pleasure endowed, fully equipped, enjoy yourself, will you obtain in the next world also just as I with these same five strands of sensual pleasure endowed, fully equipped, enjoy myself?” In this way, venerable sir, the venerable Raṭṭhapāla to King Korabya the third discourse on Dhamma expounded and made known. Question – And the fourth discourse, friend, on Dhamma, did the venerable Elder Raṭṭhapāla to King Korabya how did he expound and make known? Answer – “What do you think, great king, do you dwell in a prosperous Kuru land?” In this way, venerable sir, the venerable Elder Raṭṭhapāla to King Korabya the fourth discourse on Dhamma expounded and made known. The Maghadeva Sutta Question – And the Maghadeva Sutta, friend, by the Blessed One, where, concerning whom, and on what occasion was it spoken? Answer – In Mithilā, venerable sir, in the Maghadeva mango grove, concerning the venerable Ānanda, it was spoken. The Blessed One, venerable sir, in a certain place revealed a smile. The venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: “What, venerable sir, what is the cause for the Blessed One's smile to appear? Tathāgatas do not reveal a smile without a reason.” On that occasion, venerable sir, it was spoken. The Madhura Sutta Question – And the Madhura Sutta, friend, where, concerning whom, on what occasion, and by whom was it spoken? Answer – In Madhurā, venerable sir, concerning King Madhura, Avantiputta, by the venerable Mahākaccāna Spoken by the Elder Āna. The King, venerable sir, Madhura, son of Avanti, said this to the venerable Mahākaccāna: "Brahmins, good Kaccāna, say this: 'Brahmins are the superior caste, other castes are inferior. Brahmins are the fair caste, other castes are dark. Brahmins alone are purified, not non-Brahmins. Brahmins are the true sons of Brahmā, born from his mouth, born of Brahmā, created by Brahmā, heirs of Brahmā.' What does the venerable Kaccāna say about this?" It was spoken, venerable sir, concerning that matter. The Discourse to Prince Bodhi Question: "Now, friend, where, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Bodhirājakumāra Sutta spoken by the Blessed One?" Answer: "In the Bhaggas, venerable sir, at Susumāragira, it was spoken concerning Prince Bodhi. Prince Bodhi, venerable sir, said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, it occurs to us thus: Happiness is not to be attained through happiness, but happiness is to be attained through suffering.' It was spoken, venerable sir, concerning that matter." Question: "Now, friend, when this was said, how did Prince Bodhi question the Blessed One, and how did the Blessed One answer him?" Answer: "When this was said, venerable sir, Prince Bodhi said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, in how long a time would a monk, having the Tathāgata as his guide, for the sake of which young men of good family rightly go forth from home to homelessness, realize for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the unsurpassed consummation of the holy life, and abide in it?' And the Blessed One, venerable sir, said: 'Then, Prince, I will question you in return about this. As it seems fit to you, so should you answer it.' And having divided it in this way, he answered." Question: "Now, friend, having heard this discourse on the Dhamma, what kind of expression of confidence did Prince Bodhi make, being confident in this discourse on the Dhamma?" Answer: "Now, venerable sir, having heard this discourse on the Dhamma, Prince Bodhi said: 'Oh, the Buddha! Oh, the Dhamma! Oh, how well-proclaimed is the Dhamma! Where indeed, in the evening..." the best of men, in the morning will attain distinction, the best of men in the morning, in the evening will attain distinction." Thus, in this discourse on the Dhamma, he, being pleased, showed his pleasure. Aṅgulimāla Sutta Question – Now, friend, where, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Aṅgulimāla Sutta spoken by the Blessed One? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was spoken concerning the venerable Elder Aṅgulimāla. The venerable Elder Aṅgulimāla, venerable sir, said this to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, in the forenoon, having dressed, and taking my bowl and robe, I entered Sāvatthī for alms. As I was walking for alms in Sāvatthī, venerable sir, in due order, I saw a certain woman, venerable sir, with a difficult birth, a distressed birth. Seeing her, it occurred to me: 'Indeed, beings suffer, indeed, beings suffer!' It was on that occasion, venerable sir, that it was spoken." Piyajātika Sutta Question – Now, friend, where, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Piyajātika Sutta spoken by the Blessed One? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was spoken concerning a certain householder. In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, a certain householder's only son, dear and beloved, had passed away. Due to his passing, he could not attend to his work, nor could he eat his food. He went to the cremation ground and wept, crying, "Where is my only son? Where is my only son?" It was on that occasion, venerable sir, that it was spoken. Bāhitika Sutta Question – Now, friend, where, concerning whom, on what occasion, and by whom was the Bāhitika Sutta spoken? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was spoken concerning King Pasenadi of Kosala by the venerable Elder Ānanda, the Treasurer of the Dhamma. King Pasenadi of Kosala, venerable sir, said this to the venerable Ānanda: "Now, venerable Ānanda, would the Blessed One engage in such bodily conduct, such bodily conduct as would be censured by recluses and brahmins?" It was on that occasion, venerable sir, that it was spoken. Dhammaceti The Sutta Question – Now, friend, where and with whom was the Dhammacetiya Sutta spoken by the Blessed One? Answer – Venerable sir, it was spoken among the Sakyans, in the Sakyan village named Medāḷupa, with King Pasenadi of Kosala. The Kaṇṇakatthaḷa Sutta Question – Now, friend, where and with whom was the Kaṇṇakatthaḷa Sutta spoken by the Blessed One? Answer – Venerable sir, it was spoken in Uruññā, in the Kaṇṇakatthaḷa deer park, with King Pasenadi of Kosala. The Brahmāyu Sutta Question – Then, friend, where, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Brahmāyu Sutta spoken by the Blessed One... the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One? Answer – Venerable sir, it was spoken in Videha, in Mithilā, in the Mango Grove of Maghadeva, concerning the brahmin Brahmāyu. The brahmin Brahmāyu, venerable sir, having approached the Blessed One, asked eight questions. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was spoken. Question – There, friend, how did the young man Uttara report to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu, the Blessed One's possession of the thirty-two marks of a Great Man? Answer – There, venerable sir, the young man Uttara reported to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu, the Blessed One's possession of the thirty-two marks of a Great Man, beginning with: "Indeed, that Master Gotama has well-planted feet. This too is a mark of a Great Man for that Master Gotama, the Great Man." Question – Further, friend, what kind of pleasing manner did the young man Uttara see and observe at the time of the Blessed One's walking, and report to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu? Answer – Further, venerable sir, the young man Uttara, having seen and observed the manner of first lifting the right foot, etc., at the time of the Blessed One's walking, reported it to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu. Question – Further, friend, what kind of p... Having seen and observed his pleasing manner, he reported to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu. Answer – And further, venerable sir, when the young man Uttara entered the inner house of the Blessed One, having seen and observed his pleasing manner, without raising his body, etc., he reported to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu. Question – And further, friend, at the mealtime of the Blessed One, what kind of pleasing manner did the young man Uttara see and observe, and report to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu? Answer – And further, venerable sir, at the mealtime of the Blessed One, when receiving the bowl, water, etc., having seen and observed the pleasing manner of the Blessed One, without raising the bowl, etc., the young man Uttara reported to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu. Question – And further, friend, after the Blessed One had eaten, what kind of pleasing manner did the young man Uttara see and observe, and report to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu? Answer – And further, venerable sir, after the Blessed One had eaten, when receiving the bowl, water, etc., having seen and observed his pleasing manner, without raising the bowl, etc., the young man Uttara reported to his own teacher, the brahmin Brahmāyu. Question – And further, friend, when the Blessed One was wearing the robe, and when going to the monastery,
