Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, Concerning Subha, the pupil of Todeyya, it was spoken. Subha, venerable sir, the pupil of Todeyya, Having approached the Blessed One, said this: "Brahmins, good Gotama, said thus: 'A householder is a practitioner of the skillful Dhamma of justice, Not one gone forth is a practitioner of the skillful Dhamma of justice.' What does the venerable Gotama say here?" In that context, venerable sir, it was spoken. Question – Again also, friend, how did Subha, the pupil of Todeyya, Ask the Blessed One, and how did the Blessed One explain and declare? Answer – "Brahmins, good Gotama, said thus: 'This is of great purpose, great task, great undertaking, great endeavor, The householder's way of life brings great fruit. This is of small purpose, small task, small undertaking, small endeavor, The renunciant's way of life brings small fruit.' What does the venerable Gotama say here?" Thus, venerable sir, Subha, the pupil of Todeyya, Again asked the Blessed One. And the Blessed One, venerable sir, [said] "Here too, I... "O young man, I am an analyst, not one who speaks in absolutes." Thus he explained analytically. The Saṅgārava Sutta Question: Friend, where was the Saṅgārava Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, concerning whom, and on what occasion? Answer: Venerable sir, it was spoken in Kosala, in a village named Cañcalikappa, concerning the young man Saṅgārava. Venerable sir, the young man Saṅgārava said this to the Blessed One: "Indeed, Master Gotama, there are some recluses and brahmins who claim to have attained the ultimate perfection of direct knowledge in this very life, and to practice the foremost holy life. Among them, Master Gotama, among those recluses and brahmins who claim to have attained the ultimate perfection of direct knowledge in this very life, and to practice the foremost holy life, which one are you, Master Gotama?" Venerable sir, it was spoken on that occasion. The Devadaha Sutta Question: Friend, where was the Devadaha Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, the Knower, the Seer, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, and concerning whom? Answer: Venerable sir, it was spoken among the Sakyans, in a Sakyan town named Devadaha, concerning many bhikkhus. The Pañcattaya Sutta Question: Friend, where was the Pañcattaya Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, and concerning whom? Answer: Venerable sir, it was spoken in Sāvatthī, concerning many bhikkhus. The Kinti Sutta Question: Friend, where was the Kinti Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, and concerning whom? Answer: Venerable sir, it was spoken in Pisinārā, in a forest grove named Baliharaṇa, concerning many bhikkhus. Question: Friend, there, how did the Blessed One first question the bhikkhus and then give an admonition which conduces to the welfare, benefit, and happiness of many people? Answer: Venerable sir, there, the Blessed One questioned the bhikkhus thus: "Bhikkhus, what do you think of me? Does the recluse Gotama teach the Dhamma for the sake of robes? Or for the sake of almsfood? Or for the sake of lodging? Or for the sake of existence or non-existence?" Having questioned the bhikkhus, he said: "Therefore, bhikkhus, the teachings I have taught you, having directly known them. Namely, the four foundations of mindfulness..." Four foundations, Four right exertions, Bases of psychic power, Five faculties, Five powers, Seven factors of awakening, The Noble Eightfold Path. There, by all united, rejoicing, not disputing, one should train. Thus, venerable sir, he gave advice to the bhikkhus. Question – How, friend, did the Blessed One give advice to the bhikkhus there a second time? Which conduces to the welfare, benefit, and happiness of many people. Answer – There, venerable sir, the Blessed One said: "And for you, bhikkhus, united, rejoicing, not disputing, training, there might be an offense for some bhikkhu, there might be a transgression. There, bhikkhus, one should not rush to accusation; the individual should be investigated." Thus, he gave advice to the bhikkhus a second time. Question – How, friend, did the Blessed One give advice to the bhikkhus there a third time? Which conduces to the welfare, benefit, and happiness of many people. Answer – "And for you, bhikkhus, united, rejoicing, not disputing, training, a verbal quarrel might arise among yourselves, a clash of views, mental aversion, displeasure, dissatisfaction." Thus, venerable sir, the Blessed One gave advice to the bhikkhus there a third time. Question – Then, friend, by that bhikkhu, thus following the Teacher's advice and instruction, "Does the venerable one raise those bhikkhus from unwholesome states and establish them in wholesome states?" when asked by others, how should he correctly answer? Answer – "Here, friend, I approached the Blessed One, and the Blessed One taught me the Dhamma. Having heard that Dhamma, I spoke to those bhikkhus. Having heard that Dhamma, those bhikkhus rose from unwholesome states and were established in wholesome states." Thus, venerable sir, by that bhikkhu, thus following the Teacher's advice and instruction, when asked by others, he should correctly answer. The Sāmagāma Sutta Question – And, friend, where, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Sāmagāma Sutta spoken by the Blessed One? Explanation: It was spoken at Sāmagāma, a Sakyan market town, concerning the Venerable Ānanda and the Venerable Cunda. The Venerable Ānanda and the Venerable Cunda went to the Buddha. Having approached, they bowed to the Buddha and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha: “This novice Cunda, sir, says this: ‘The Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta, sir, has just died in Pāvā. With his death, the Nigaṇṭhas are divided, split into two, quarrelling, contending, disputing, wounding each other with sharp words… …without refuge, with broken pillars.’ It occurs to me, sir: ‘May a dispute not arise in the Saṅgha after the Buddha’s passing. Such a dispute would be for the harm of many people, for the unhappiness of many people, for the loss, for the disadvantage, for the suffering of gods and humans.’” It was spoken on that occasion, sir. Sunakkhatta Sutta Question: Where, friends, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Sunakkhatta Sutta spoken by the Buddha? Explanation: It was spoken in Vesālī, sir, concerning Sunakkhatta, the Licchavi’s son. Sunakkhatta, the Licchavi’s son, approached the Buddha, sir, and said this: “I have heard, sir, that many bhikkhus have declared final knowledge in the Buddha’s presence: ‘Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what was to be done has been done, there is no more of this state.’ Have these bhikkhus, sir, rightly declared final knowledge, or have some bhikkhus here declared final knowledge out of conceit?” It was spoken on that occasion, sir. Imperturbable-Suitable Sutta Question: Where, friends, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Imperturbable-Suitable Sutta spoken by the Buddha? Explanation: It was spoken in the Kuru country, sir, at Kammāsadhamma, a Kuru market town, concerning many bhikkhus. Gaṇakamoggallāna Sutta Question: Ga Friends, where was the Gaṇaka-Moggallāna Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, concerning whom, and on what occasion? Reply: In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was spoken concerning the brahmin Gaṇaka-Moggallāna. Venerable sir, the brahmin Gaṇaka-Moggallāna approached the Blessed One and said this: "Just as, good Gotama, in this Migāramātupāsāda, a gradual training is seen, a gradual practice, a gradual path, that is, right up to the last step of the staircase... ...Is it possible, good Gotama, in this Dhamma and Discipline too, to declare such a gradual training, a gradual practice, a gradual path?" Venerable sir, it was spoken on that occasion. Question: When this was said, friends, what did the brahmin Gaṇaka-Moggallāna say to the Blessed One? And how did the Blessed One answer him? Reply: When this was said, venerable sir, the brahmin Gaṇaka-Moggallāna said this to the Blessed One: "Do all of Master Gotama's disciples, being thus advised by Master Gotama, being thus instructed, attain the ultimate goal, Nibbāna, or do some not attain it?" And the Blessed One, venerable sir, answered the brahmin Gaṇaka-Moggallāna, beginning with this: "Some of my disciples, brahmin, being thus advised by me, being thus instructed, attain the ultimate goal, Nibbāna, some do not attain it." Question: And friends, having heard this discourse on the Dhamma, what kind of expression of faith did Gaṇaka-Moggallāna make, being confident in this Dhamma and Discipline? Reply: And venerable sir, having heard this discourse on the Dhamma, the brahmin Gaṇaka-Moggallāna, being confident in this Dhamma and Discipline, made an expression of faith, beginning with this: "Those persons, good Gotama, who are without faith, who are for a livelihood, not with faith, who have gone forth from home to homelessness..." Gopaka-Moggallāna Sutta Question: Friends, where was the Gopaka-Moggallāna Sutta spoken, concerning whom, on what occasion, and by whom? Reply: In Rājagaha, venerable sir, concerning Gopaka-Moggallāna, the b spoken by the Venerable Ānanda Thera, the Treasurer of the Dhamma, concerning a brahmin. Gopaka Moggallāna, brahmin, said to the Venerable Ānanda, "Is there, good Ānanda, even one bhikkhu who is entirely, in every way, endowed with those qualities with which the good Gotama was endowed, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One?" It was spoken, brahmin, on that occasion. Question: And how, friend, did the Venerable Ānanda Thera, the Treasurer of the Dhamma, declare the inspiring qualities of a bhikkhu there, which were taught by that Blessed One, the Knower, the Seer, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One? And with which qualities other bhikkhus would honor, respect, revere, and venerate a bhikkhu, and dwell in reliance on him, having honored and respected him. Answer:
