Ambalaṭṭhika-Rāhulovāda Sutta Question – Now, friends, the Ambalaṭṭhika-Rāhulovāda Sutta, by the Blessed One, where, concerning whom, was it spoken? Answer – In Rājagaha, venerable sir, concerning Venerable Rāhula, it was spoken. Mahā-Rāhulovāda Sutta Question – Now, friends, the Mahā-Rāhulovāda Sutta, by the Blessed One, where, concerning whom, on what occasion, was it spoken? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning Venerable Rāhula, it was spoken. Venerable Rāhula, venerable sir, relying on the Blessed One's and his own excellent existence, developed desire and attachment to household life. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was spoken. Cūḷa-Mālukya Sutta Question – Now, friends, the Cūḷa-Mālukya Sutta, by the Blessed One, where, concerning whom, on what occasion, was it spoken? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning Venerable Mālukyaputta, it was spoken. Venerable Mālukyaputta, venerable sir, reported to the Blessed One the thoughts of his secluded, solitary, withdrawn mind. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was spoken. Mahā-Mālukya Sutta Question – Now, friends, the Mahā-Mālukya Sutta, by the Blessed One, where, concerning whom, on what occasion, was it spoken? Answer – In that same Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning Venerable Mahāmālukyaputta, it was spoken. Bhaddāli Sutta Question – Now, friends, by that Blessed One... ...the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, the Bhaddāli Sutta, where, concerning whom, on what occasion, was it spoken? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning Venerable Bhaddāli, it was spoken. Venerable Bhaddāli, venerable sir, when the Blessed One was laying down a training rule, and the community of bhikkhus was undertaking the training, expressed a lack of enthusiasm. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was spoken. That. An offense, venerable sir, has overcome me, like a fool, like one deluded, like one unskillful, in that when the training rule was being laid down by the Blessed One, and the Sangha of bhikkhus was undertaking the training, I declared a lack of zeal. May the Blessed One, venerable sir, accept this offense of mine as an offense for future restraint. Question: Then, friend, what kind of question did Venerable Bhaddāli ask the Blessed One? And how did the Blessed One analyze and explain it to him? Answer: Then, venerable sir, Venerable Bhaddāli asked the Blessed One a question beginning with: "What, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, why some bhikkhus here are made to act forcibly, forcibly?" And the Blessed One, venerable sir, analyzed and explained it to Venerable Bhaddāli, beginning with: "Here, Bhaddāli, some bhikkhu is frequently offending, is abundant in offenses." Question: Even then, friend, what kind of question did Venerable Bhaddāli ask the Blessed One again? And how did the Blessed One analyze and explain that to him too? Answer: Even then, venerable sir, Venerable Bhaddāli asked the Blessed One again a question: "What, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, why formerly there were fewer training rules, and more bhikkhus were established in direct knowledge? But what, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, why nowadays there are more training rules, and fewer bhikkhus are established in direct knowledge?" And the Blessed One, venerable sir, analyzed and explained it to Venerable Bhaddāli, beginning with: "It is so, Bhaddāli, when beings decline, when the True Dhamma disappears, there are more [training rules] and fewer bhikkhus are established in direct knowledge." The Quail Simile Sutta Question: And, friend, where was the Quail Simile Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, concerning whom, and on what occasion? Answer: It was spoken, venerable sir, in the Anguttarāpa country, in a market town called Āpaṇa, in the Anguttarāpa district, concerning Venerable Udāyī. Venerable Udāyī, venerable sir, approached the Blessed One... ...went and said this: "Here, venerable sir, as I was secluded, withdrawn, such a thought arose in my mind: 'Truly, for many of us, the Blessed One is the remover of suffering-states; truly, for many of us, the Blessed One is the bringer of happy-states; truly, for many of us, the Blessed One is the remover of unwholesome states; truly, for many of us, the Blessed One is the bringer of wholesome states.'" It was spoken, venerable sir, concerning that matter. Question – Then, friend, what kind of similes did the Blessed One show when he gave instruction to the bhikkhus? Answer – Then, venerable sir, the Blessed One, showing four similes – the quail simile, the elephant simile, the poor man simile, and the householder simile – gave instruction to the bhikkhus. Question – And then, friend, having given instruction to the bhikkhus with four similes, how did the Blessed One further elaborate the teaching? Answer – Thus, venerable sir, the Blessed One, having given instruction to the bhikkhus with four similes, further elaborated the discourse for the bhikkhus, beginning with: "These four persons, Udāyi, are found, are present in the world." The Cātuma Sutta Question – And, friend, where, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Cātuma Sutta spoken by the Blessed One? Answer – It was spoken, venerable sir, at Cātuma, concerning many recently ordained bhikkhus, the co-residents of the Venerable Elders Sāriputta and Moggallāna. Five hundred bhikkhus, venerable sir, with Sāriputta and Moggallāna as their leaders, had arrived at Cātuma to see the Blessed One. And those visiting bhikkhus, conversing with the resident bhikkhus, arranging lodgings, putting away their bowls and robes, were loud and noisy. It was spoken, venerable sir, concerning that matter. Question – And how, friend, did the Blessed One give instruction to the bhikkhus there? Answer – "Monks, these four dangers are to be expected by one descending into water," beginning with this, venerable sir, the Blessed One there to the bhikk gave them advice. The Naḷakapāna Sutta Question: Friends, where was the Naḷakapāna Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, and concerning whom? Answer: Venerable sir, it was spoken at Naḷakapāna, concerning many well-known young men of good family, with Elder Anuruddha as their chief. The Goliyāni Sutta Question: Friends, where was the Goliyāni Sutta spoken, concerning whom, on what occasion, and by whom? Answer: Venerable sir, it was spoken at Rājagaha, concerning the Venerable Goliyāni, by the Venerable Elder Sāriputta, the General of the Dhamma. Venerable sir, the Venerable Goliyāni, a forest dweller, of good conduct, was present in the midst of the Saṅgha for some reason. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was spoken. The Kīṭāgiri Sutta Question: Friends, where was the Kīṭāgiri Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One, concerning whom, and on what occasion? Answer: Venerable sir, it was spoken in Kāsī, at Kīṭāgiri, in the Kāsī market town, concerning the monks Assaji and Punabbasu. Venerable sir, the monks Assaji and Punabbasu, when spoken to by the monks in accordance with the Dhamma, said thus: "Indeed, friends, we eat in the evening, and in the morning, and during the day, at the wrong time. By eating in the evening, and in the morning, and during the day, at the wrong time, we perceive ourselves to be free from illness, free from affliction, light in body, strong, and living comfortably. Why should we abandon what is immediately visible and pursue what is (only) timely? We will continue to eat in the evening, and in the morning, and during the day, at the wrong time." On that occasion, venerable sir, it was spoken. The Tevijjavaccha Sutta Question: Friends, where was the Tevijjavaccha Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, concerning whom, and on what occasion? Answer: Venerable sir, it was spoken at Vesālī, concerning the wanderer Vacchagotta. Venerable sir, the wanderer Vacchagotta said this to the Blessed One: "I have heard, venerable sir, that the ascetic Gotama is omniscient, all-seeing, and claims complete knowledge and vision. And for me, while walking, and standing, and sleeping, and waking, continuously..." constantly and continuously knowledge and vision is present to me.” “Those, venerable sir, who say this: ‘The recluse Gotama is omniscient and all-seeing, he claims unrestricted knowledge and vision; constantly and continuously knowledge and vision is present to me whether I am walking, standing, sleeping, or awake’— Are these, venerable sir, speakers of what the Blessed One said? Do they not misrepresent the Blessed One with what is not true? Do they explain the Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma? And does any co-dharmic dispute or argument not incur censure?” It was spoken, venerable sir, concerning that matter. Aggivacchasutta Question: “And where, friends, was the Aggivacchasutta spoken, concerning whom, and on what occasion?” Answer: “It was spoken, venerable sir, at Savatthi, concerning the wanderer Vacchagotta. The wanderer Vacchagotta, venerable sir, approached the Blessed One and asked: ‘Is it, good Gotama, that the good Gotama holds the view: “The world is eternal, this alone is true, anything else is foolish”?’ He asked such a question. It was spoken, venerable sir, concerning that matter.” Mahāvacchasutta Question: “And where, friends, was the Mahāvacchasutta spoken by the Blessed One, concerning whom, and on what occasion?” Answer: “It was spoken, venerable sir, at Rajagaha, concerning the wanderer Vacchagotta himself. The wanderer Vacchagotta, venerable sir, approached the Blessed One and said this: ‘For a long time, good Gotama, I have conversed with the good Gotama. May the good Gotama briefly teach me what is wholesome and unwholesome.’ It was spoken, venerable sir, concerning that matter.” Question: “When this was said, friends, the wanderer Vacchagotta, having become confident in this Dhamma and Discipline, what kind of expression of confidence did he make?
