among the seven consciousness-elements; And making the last one three-fold, by wholesome, unwholesome, etc. 173. Indeed, by way of wholesome and unwholesome, by distinction of resultant and functional; There are seventy-six distinctions, of the mind-consciousness element. 174. Making the mind-element two-fold, by distinction of resultant and functional; Nine-fold by the previously stated, mind becomes ten-fold. 175. Making the two elements three-fold, again the last one, the wise one; Declares consciousness to be eleven-fold. 176. And the mind-consciousness element, by way of wholesome, unwholesome, etc.; Having divided it into four, one should declare it to be twelve-fold. 177. Consciousness becomes fourteen-fold, by distinction of fourteen functions; Of rebirth-linking, life-continuum, and of death, and adverting. 178. Of the five like seeing, etc., of receiving consciousness; And by way of investigating, determining, and impelling. 179. Of the registering consciousness, in the same way, by distinction of function; Thus consciousness is fourteen-fold, so should one declare. 180. And by way of the diversity of planes and persons, as it occurs; This consciousness is manifold, so should one understand. 181. Indeed, in this method of one-fold, etc., the bhikkhu who is skilled and intelligent here; For him, the meanings gone into Abhidhamma, are like an amalaka fruit in hand. Thus, in the Abhidhammāvatāra, the exposition of one-fold, etc., is the Fourth Chapter. 5. Fifth Chapter Exposition of the arising of consciousness in planes and persons 182. Hereafter I shall speak, that which increases wisdom, no which; The arising of consciousness in the planes, and in terms of individuals. 183. Gods and humans, and the three planes of misery; Five destinations are declared, but by the Teacher, three existences. 184. There are thirty planes, and in them thirty individuals; Born in these planes, all these individuals. 185. In terms of rebirth-consciousness, there are nineteen; And this rebirth is said to be of two kinds. 186. Without consciousness and with consciousness, without consciousness for the non-percipient; The rest are known as with consciousness, and that is nineteen. 187. In terms of rebirth alone, there are twenty individuals; Here, due to the focus on consciousness, those without consciousness are not included. 188. Without cause, and with two causes, individuals may be of three kinds; But the Noble Ones are eight, all together said to be eleven. 189. From the divisions of all these individuals; Listen to me as I speak of the arising of consciousness in the planes. 190. In the thirty planes, how many types of consciousness arise, tell me; Only fourteen types of consciousness exist in all planes. 191. Always twenty types of consciousness exist only in the sense-sphere; Five in the fine-material planes, and four in the immaterial planes. 192. In the sense-sphere and fine-material planes, eighteen indeed exist; Forty-two types of consciousness exist in all three planes. 193. Excluding all the four planes of misery; Thirteen types of consciousness exist in the twenty-six planes. 194. Excluding the other four immaterial planes; Consciousnesses arise, six in the twenty-six planes. 195. Excluding the five planes of the Pure Abodes; Five types of consciousness arise in the twenty-five planes. 196. Two others exist in the twenty-five planes; Excluding the neither-perception-nor-non-perception plane, and the four planes of misery. 197. Two types of consciousness also arise in the twenty-four planes; Excluding the sphere of nothingness, the neither-perception-nor-non-perception plane, and the planes of misery. 198. Leaving aside the planes of misery, and the three immaterial planes; Only two types of consciousness exist in the twenty-three planes. 199. In the immaterial and planes of misery, excluding eight Oh, realms! Eleven kinds of consciousness, exist in twenty-two realms. In Pure Abodes and woeful realms, excluding nine realms; in twenty-one always, four indeed arise. One in seventeen indeed, consciousness arises in realms; excluding Pure Abodes, and woeful and formless realms. Twelve indeed arise, in eleven realms; excluding all, the exalted realms. For sense-sphere deities, and for humans, eight consciousnesses arise, always in seven realms. One fifth-jhana resultant, arises in six realms; and four consciousnesses, in three, in three realms indeed. And four consciousnesses, exist in each single realm; of formless-sphere resultants, in terms of their manifestation. Wholesome and unwholesome in sense-sphere, their resultant rootless ones; and the two apprehending (consciousness), are thirty-seven minds indeed. In woeful realms like hell, in all four, they arise; fifty-two remaining (consciousnesses), never arise. For sense-sphere gods and humans, nine exalted resultants. They do not arise, they arise, eighty hearts always. In sense-sphere, eight great resultants, and the two consciousnesses of displeasure; likewise the three consciousnesses of nose-etc. resultant, unwholesome-born. And formless-sphere resultants do not exist, in the form-sphere realm; with these consciousnesses, three paths, and two fruitions. Four associated with wrong view, and that associated with doubt; four lower resultants, are not found in Pure Abodes. The remaining fifty-one, consciousnesses indeed are found; all form-sphere (consciousnesses), and sense-sphere resultants. And the path of displeasure, and the two rootless functional (consciousnesses); forty-three consciousnesses, do not exist in the formless realm. Thus, by way of realms, one should explain the arising of consciousness; likewise by way of the eleven, kinds of individuals. Wholesome and unwholesome in sense-sphere, their resultant rootless ones; and the two apprehending (consciousness), are thirty-seven minds indeed. For a rootless being, they arise in five realms. Fifty-two remain, they never arise. 217. From those stated for the rootless, kāma-results are two-rooted; For the two-rooted, forty-one arise. 218. All are exalted, and all are taintless; Three-rooted results, and nine functional in the kāma-sphere. 219. Forty-eight do not arise for the two-rooted; For a being with three-rooted rebirth in the kāma-sphere. 220. Fifty-four mental states arise for the ordinary person; Forty-one are stated for the two-rooted. 221. Four associated with knowledge, results in the kāma-sphere; Meritorious states in the rūpa and arūpa realms, fifty-four mental states. 222. Thirty-five do not arise for the ordinary person; Among the six devas and humans, for the Stream-enterer. 223. Fifty-seven states of mind are said to arise; Ninety-seven states of mind are declared not to arise. 224. Those stated for the Stream-enterer, excluding the first fruit; With his own fruit, they would be for the Once-returner. 225. Those stated for the Stream-enterer, excluding the two states of aversion; And having abandoned the second fruit, those states of mind; Are said to arise for the Non-returner being. 226. How many states of mind arise for the Arahant in the kāma-sphere? Forty-four are for the Arahant in the kāma-sphere. 227. For all four path-attainers, each his own; Path-consciousness would be theirs, for they are of a single mind-moment. 228. For the ordinary person, in the first three jhāna-realms; Thirty-five states of mind are said to arise. 229. Three consciousnesses in the nose, etc., seven unwholesome; Great results, and results of the higher jhāna-realms. 230. Also arūpa results, and the two states of displeasure; Eighteen functional states, and eight supramundane. 231. For an ordinary person born in the first jhāna; These fifty-four states of mind are not obtained. 232. For the Stream-enterer, thirty-one arise there; From those stated for the ordinary person, excluding the five unwholesome. For the Once-returner there, excluding the first fruit, just thirty-one arise, including his own fruit. For the Non-returner right there, excluding the second fruit, just thirty-one arise, with his own fruit-consciousness. Consciousness of eye and ear, receiving (consciousness) born of merit, and the two investigating (consciousnesses), twenty functional consciousnesses. The Arahant fruit is a result, born of the first jhāna. Twenty-seven consciousnesses for the Arahant arise. For the ordinary person, in just three (realms), in the second jhāna planes, thirty-six (arise) from the second and third jhāna results. From those mentioned for the ordinary person, excluding the five unwholesome (cittas), for the Stream-enterer, thirty-two (arise), together with his own fruit. From those mentioned for the Stream-enterer, excluding the first fruit, thirty-two (arise) with the fruit-consciousness, for the Once-returner, his own. From those mentioned for the Once-returner, excluding the second fruit, with the Non-returner's fruit, just thirty-two indeed arise. For the Arahant, in just three (realms), twenty-eight of his own (arise), with the fruit, from the second and third jhāna results. For the devas of Parittasubha and others, in the three planes, just thirty-five arise, from the result of the fourth jhāna. For the Stream-enterer, there, thirty-one consciousnesses arise. For the Once-returner, thus, and also for the Non-returner. For the Arahant, right there, twenty-seven consciousnesses (arise). Likewise, in Vehapphala also, for all (noble ones), consciousnesses are (the same). Just thirty-one consciousnesses in the Pure Abodes planes, for the Non-returner being, are, thus one should declare. But for the Arahant, right there, consciousnesses are twenty-seven. Thus, in the form realms, consciousnesses should be known by the discerning one. Twenty-four consciousnesses in the first formless plane, for the ordinary person being, arise, thus one should specify. For the Stream-enterer, right there,
