8. Eighth Chapter (73) 1. Discourse on Six Destinations 503. Six destinations? Yes. Were not five destinations stated by the Blessed One – hell, animal realm, ghost realm, humans, devas? Yes. If five destinations were stated by the Blessed One – hell, animal realm, ghost realm, humans, devas; then it should not be said – "six destinations". Six destinations? Yes. Are not the Kālakañcika asuras of the same appearance, same possessions, same food, same lifespan as the ghosts, and do they not intermarry with the ghosts? Yes. If the Kālakañcika asuras are of the same appearance, same possessions, same food, same lifespan as the ghosts, and intermarry with the ghosts, then it should not be said – "six destinations". Six destinations? Yes. Is not Vepacitti's assembly of the same appearance, same possessions, same food, same lifespan as the devas, and do they not intermarry with the devas? Yes. If Vepacitti's assembly is of the same appearance, same possessions, same food, same lifespan as the devas, and intermarries with the devas, then it should not be said – "six destinations". Six destinations? Yes. Is not Vepacitti's assembly former devas? Yes. If Vepacitti's assembly are former devas, then it should not be said – "six destinations". 504. Should it not be said – "six destinations"? Yes. Is there not an asura realm? Yes. If there is an asura realm, then it should be said – "six destinations". The discourse on six destinations is concluded. 8. Eighth Chapter (74) 2. Discourse on the Intermediate State of Existence 505. Is there an intermediate state of existence? Yes. Is it the sense-sphere existence? It should not be said so... Is there an intermediate state of existence? Yes. Is it the form-sphere existence? It should not be said so... Is there an intermediate state of existence? Yes. Is it the formless-sphere existence? It should not be said so... Is there an intermediate state of existence? Yes. Is there an intermediate state of existence between the sense-sphere existence and the form-sphere existence? Is there an intermediate existence? Yes. Between the form existence and the formless existence, is there an intermediate existence? It should not be said thus (etc.). Between the sense-sphere existence and the form existence, is there no intermediate existence? Yes. If there is no intermediate existence between the sense-sphere existence and the form existence, then indeed it should not be said – "there is an intermediate existence". Between the form existence and the formless existence, is there no intermediate existence? Yes. If there is no intermediate existence between the form existence and the formless existence, then indeed it should not be said – "there is an intermediate existence". Is there an intermediate existence? Yes. Is it the fifth womb, the sixth destiny, the eighth station of consciousness, the tenth abode of beings? It should not be said thus (etc.). Is there an intermediate existence? Yes. Is intermediate existence an existence, a destiny, an abode of beings, a wandering, a womb, a station of consciousness, an acquisition of self-existence? It should not be said thus (etc.). Is there kamma leading to intermediate existence? It should not be said thus (etc.). Are there beings destined for intermediate existence? It should not be said thus (etc.). Do beings in intermediate existence arise, grow old, die, pass away, and reappear? It should not be said thus (etc.). In intermediate existence, are there form, feeling, perception, mental formations, consciousness? It should not be said thus (etc.). Is intermediate existence a five-constituent existence? It should not be said thus (etc.). Is there a sense-sphere existence? Is sense-sphere existence an existence, a destiny, an abode of beings, a wandering, a womb, a station of consciousness, an acquisition of self-existence? Yes. Is there an intermediate existence? Is intermediate existence an existence, a destiny, an abode of beings, a wandering, a womb, a station of consciousness, an acquisition of self-existence? It should not be said thus (etc.). Is there kamma leading to sense-sphere existence? Yes. Is there kamma leading to intermediate existence? It should not be said thus (etc.). Are there beings destined for sense-sphere existence? Yes. Are there beings destined for intermediate existence? It should not be said thus (etc.). Do beings in sense-sphere existence arise, grow old, die, pass away, and reappear? Yes. Do beings in an intermediate existence are born, grow old, die, pass away, and reappear? Is there an intermediate state? Yes. Is there an intermediate state for all beings? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Is there no intermediate state for all beings? Yes. If there is no intermediate state for all beings, then indeed it should not be said – "There is an intermediate state." Is there an intermediate state? Yes. Is there an intermediate state for a person who has committed an anantarika kamma? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Is there no intermediate state for a person who has committed an anantarika kamma? Yes. If there is no intermediate state for a person who has committed an anantarika kamma, then indeed it should not be said – "There is an intermediate state." Is there no intermediate state for a person who has committed an anantarika kamma? Yes. Is there an intermediate state for a person who has committed an anantarika kamma? Is there no intermediate state for a person bound for the formless realm? Yes. Is there an intermediate state for a person bound for the formless realm? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Is there no intermediate state for a person bound for the formless realm? Yes. Is there not no intermediate state for a person bound for the intermediate state? Is there an intermediate state? It should not be said thus (etc.). 509. Should it not be said that there is an intermediate state? Yes. Is there not a person who attains Nibbāna in the intermediate state? Yes. If there is a person who attains Nibbāna in Nibbāna in the intermediate state, then indeed it should be said – "There is an intermediate state." Since there is a person who attains Nibbāna in the intermediate state, is there an intermediate state? Yes.
