The discourse on mind as object is concluded. 5. The Fifth Chapter (50) 8. The discourse on knowledge of the future 439. Is there knowledge of the future? Yes. Does one know the future from its root, from its cause, from its origin, from its arising, from its source, from its generation, from its nutriment, from its object, from its condition, from its origination? It should not be said so. Is there knowledge of the future? Yes. Does one know the future as a condition of cause, as a condition of object, as a condition of dominance, as a condition of contiguity knows, knows the immediately contiguous condition? It should not be said thus… (and so on). Is there knowledge of the future? Yes. Does the individual who has attained the gotrabhū stage have knowledge of the path of stream-entry? It should not be said thus… (and so on). Does the individual who is practicing for the realization of the fruit of stream-entry have knowledge of the fruit of stream-entry? It should not be said thus… (and so on). Does the individual practicing for the realization of once-returning… (and so on)… non-returning… (and so on)… arahantship have knowledge of arahantship? It should not be said thus… (and so on). 440. Should it not be said – “there is knowledge of the future”? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One – “Pāṭaliputta, Ānanda, will have three dangers – from fire, or from water, or from internal dissension”? Is there indeed a Suttanta? Yes. Then there is knowledge of the future. The discourse on knowledge of the future is concluded. 5. The Fifth Chapter (51) 9. Discourse on the Present 441. Is there knowledge of the present? Yes. Does that knowledge know that knowledge? It should not be said thus… (and so on)… Does that knowledge know that knowledge? Yes. Does that knowledge know that knowledge as “knowledge”? It should not be said thus… (and so on)… Does that knowledge know that knowledge as “knowledge”? Yes. Is that knowledge the object of that knowledge? It should not be said thus… (and so on). Is that knowledge the object of that knowledge? Yes. Does that contact contact that contact, does that feeling feel that feeling, does that perception perceive that perception, does that volition intend that volition, does that consciousness cognize that consciousness, does that initial application apply that initial application, does that sustained application sustain that sustained application, does that joy delight in that joy, does that mindfulness remember that mindfulness, does that wisdom understand that wisdom, does that sword cut that sword, does that axe hew that axe, does that hatchet hew that hatchet, does that adze that adze with that [tool], he carves that [tool], with that needle, he sews that needle, with that fingertip, he touches that fingertip, with that nostril-tip, he touches that nostril-tip, with that head, he touches that head, with that excrement, he washes that excrement, with that urine, he washes that urine, with that saliva, he washes that saliva, with that pus, he washes that pus, with that blood, he washes that blood? It should not be said thus… 442. Should it not be said: "There is knowledge in the present"? Yes. When all formations are seen as impermanent, is not that knowledge also seen as impermanent? Yes. If, when all formations are seen as impermanent, that knowledge is also seen as impermanent, then indeed it should be said: "There is knowledge in the present." The discourse on knowledge of the present is concluded. 5. The Fifth Chapter (52) 10. The discourse on knowledge of the fruit 443. Does a disciple have knowledge of the fruit? Yes. Does a disciple declare the fruit as made? It should not be said thus… Does a disciple have knowledge of the fruit? Yes. Does a disciple have knowledge of the faculties of others regarding the fruit, knowledge of the faculties of others, knowledge of the inclinations of others? It should not be said thus… Does a disciple have knowledge of the fruit? Yes. Does a disciple have the designation of aggregates, the designation of sense bases, the designation of elements, the designation of truths, the designation of faculties, the designation of individuals? It should not be said thus… Does a disciple have knowledge of the fruit? Yes. Is a disciple a conqueror, a teacher, a perfectly enlightened one, omniscient, all-seeing, master of the Dhamma, refuge in the Dhamma? It should not be said thus… Does a disciple have knowledge of the fruit? Yes. Is a disciple the producer of the unarisen path, the generator of the unoriginated path, the proclaimer of the unproclaimed path, one who knows the path, one who understands the path, one skilled in the path? It should not be said thus… 444. Should it not be said: "A disciple has knowledge of the fruit"? Yes. Is a disciple ignorant? It should not be said thus… Therefore, there is knowledge of the disciple in the fruit, etc. The discourse on the knowledge of fruits is concluded. The Fifth Chapter. Its summary – Knowledge of liberation, the liberated, Knowledge of the learner and the non-learner, Knowledge in the opposite, Knowledge for the undetermined to go to determination, All knowledge is analytical knowledge, Conventional knowledge, Knowledge of the penetration of minds, Knowledge of the future, Knowledge of the present, Knowledge of the disciple in the fruit.
