If for an Arahant, lust is abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future, then it should certainly not be said: "An Arahant falls away from Arahantship." Does an Arahant fall away from Arahantship? Yes. But for an Arahant, is not hatred abandoned... delusion abandoned... conceit abandoned... views abandoned... doubt abandoned... sloth abandoned... restlessness abandoned... shamelessness abandoned... lack of moral dread abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future? Is it of non-arising nature? Yes. If indeed for the Arahant, shamelessness is abandoned, its root cut off, made like a palm-stump, made non-existent, of non-arising nature in the future, then it should not be said: "The Arahant falls away from Arahantship." Does the Arahant fall away from Arahantship? Yes. Has not the path for the abandonment of lust been developed for the Arahant? Yes. If indeed for the Arahant the path for the abandonment of lust has been developed, then it should not be said: "The Arahant falls away from Arahantship." Does the Arahant fall away from Arahantship? Have not for the Arahant for the abandonment of lust the foundations of mindfulness been developed... the right efforts been developed... the bases of psychic power been developed... the faculties been developed... the powers been developed... the factors of enlightenment been developed? Have not for the Arahant for the abandonment of hatred... for the abandonment of shamelessness the path been developed... the factors of enlightenment been developed? Yes. If indeed for the Arahant for the abandonment of shamelessness the factors of enlightenment have been developed, then it should not be said: "The Arahant falls away from Arahantship." 261. Does the Arahant fall away from Arahantship? Yes. Is not the Arahant devoid of lust, devoid of hatred, devoid of delusion, one who has done what had to be done, one who has laid down the burden, one who has attained his own true aim, one whose fetters of existence are exhausted, one rightly liberated by perfect knowledge, one who has lifted the cross-bar, one who has filled in the moat, one who has pulled out the stake, one who is without a bolt, noble, one who has laid down the banner, one who has laid down the burden, unfettered, one who has won a good victory; for him suffering is fully understood, the origin is abandoned, the cessation is realized, the path is developed, what is to be known by direct knowledge is directly known, what is to be fully understood is fully understood,
