There are twenty-two faculties: the faculty of the eye, the faculty of the ear, the faculty of the nose, the faculty of the tongue, the faculty of the body, the faculty of the mind, the faculty of femininity, the faculty of masculinity, the faculty of life, the faculty of pleasure, the faculty of pain, the faculty of joy, the faculty of displeasure, the faculty of equanimity, the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom, the faculty of knowing the unknown, the faculty of final knowledge, the faculty of one who has known. 220. Among these, what is the faculty of the eye? That eye, sensitive matter dependent on the four great elements, ... like an empty village – this is called "the faculty of the eye". Among these, what is the faculty of the ear... the faculty of the nose... the faculty of the tongue... the faculty of the body? That body, sensitive matter dependent on the four great elements, ... like an empty village – this is called "the faculty of the body". Among these, what is the faculty of the mind? In one way, the faculty of the mind is: associated with contact. In two ways, the faculty of the mind is: there is with root-causes, there is without root-causes. In three ways, the faculty of the mind is: there is wholesome, there is unwholesome, there is indeterminate. In four ways, the faculty of the mind is: there is belonging to the sense-sphere, there is belonging to the form-sphere, there is belonging to the formless-sphere, there is not included. In five ways, the faculty of the mind is: there is associated with the faculty of pleasure, there is associated with the faculty of pain, there is associated with the faculty of joy, there is associated with the faculty of displeasure, there is associated with the faculty of equanimity. In six ways, the faculty of the mind is: eye-consciousness... mind-consciousness. Thus, the faculty of the mind in six ways. In seven ways, the faculty of the mind is: eye-consciousness... body-consciousness, the mind-element, the mind-consciousness element. Thus, the faculty of the mind in seven ways. In eight ways, the faculty of the mind is: eye-consciousness... body-consciousness, there is accompanied by pleasure, there is accompanied by pain, the mind-element, the mind-consciousness element. The faculty of mind in nine ways – eye-consciousness… (and so on)… body-consciousness, mind-element, mind-consciousness element are wholesome, are unwholesome, are indeterminate. Thus, the faculty of mind in nine ways. The faculty of mind in ten ways – eye-consciousness… (and so on)… body-consciousness are accompanied by pleasure, are accompanied by pain, mind-element, mind-consciousness element are wholesome, are unwholesome, are indeterminate. Thus, the faculty of mind in ten ways… (and so on)… thus, the faculty of mind in many ways. This is called "the faculty of mind". Therein, what is the faculty of femininity? That which is a woman's feminine characteristic, feminine sign, feminine form, feminine deportment, femininity, feminine state – this is called "the faculty of femininity". Therein, what is the faculty of masculinity? That which is a man's masculine characteristic, masculine sign, masculine form, masculine deportment, masculinity, masculine state – this is called "the faculty of masculinity". Therein, what is the faculty of life? The faculty of life is of two kinds – there is the faculty of life in form, there is the faculty of life in the formless. Therein, what is the faculty of life in form? That which is the age, duration, maintenance, carrying on, movement, continuance, preservation, life, life-faculty of those material phenomena – this is called "the faculty of life in form". Therein, what is the faculty of life in the formless? That which is the age, duration, maintenance, carrying on, movement, continuance, preservation, life, life-faculty of those immaterial phenomena – this is called "the faculty of life in the formless". This is called "the faculty of life". Therein, what is the faculty of pleasure? That which is bodily pleasantness, bodily pleasure, pleasantness and pleasure born of bodily contact, feeling of pleasant and pleasurable sensation born of bodily contact – this is called "the faculty of pleasure". Therein, what is the faculty of pain? That which is bodily unpleasantness, bodily pain, unpleasantness and pain born of bodily contact, feeling of unpleasant and painful sensation born of bodily contact – this is called "the faculty of pain". Therein, what is mental pleasure What is the faculty of joy? That which is mental pleasantness, mental happiness, a feeling born of mental contact, pleasant and happy, a pleasant and happy sensation born of mental contact – this is called "the faculty of joy." What, then, is the faculty of displeasure? That which is mental unpleasantness, mental suffering, a feeling born of mental contact, unpleasant and painful, an unpleasant and painful sensation born of mental contact – this is called "the faculty of displeasure." What, then, is the faculty of equanimity? That which is mental neither pleasant nor unpleasant, a feeling born of mental contact, neither painful nor pleasant, a sensation born of mental contact, neither painful nor pleasant – this is called "the faculty of equanimity." What, then, is the faculty of faith? That which is faith, believing, conviction, serene confidence, faith, the faculty of faith, the power of faith – this is called "the faculty of faith." That which is mental exertion, effort, striving, endeavor, exertion, enthusiasm, perseverance, strength, steadfastness, unflagging effort, unabandoned desire, unabandoned burden, taking up the burden, energy, the faculty of energy, the power of energy – this is called "the faculty of energy." What, then, is the faculty of mindfulness? That which is mindfulness, recollection, remembrance, mindfulness, remembering, bearing in mind, not floating away, not forgetting, mindfulness, the faculty of mindfulness, the power of mindfulness, right mindfulness – this is called "the faculty of mindfulness." What, then, is the faculty of concentration? That which is the mind's steadfastness, firm steadfastness, unswerving steadfastness, non-distraction, non-scattering, undistracted mental state, tranquility, the faculty of concentration, the power of concentration, right concentration – this is called "the faculty of concentration." What, then, is the faculty of wisdom? That which is wisdom, understanding... (ellipsis) non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view – this is called "the faculty of wisdom." What, then, is the faculty of knowing the unknown? That which is, concerning those phenomena, unknown, unseen, unreached, unperceived, unverified, the wisdom for their verification, understanding... (ellipsis) non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view, phenomena... The investigation-enlightenment factor, a path factor, included in the path – this is called the faculty of 'I shall know the unknown'. Therein, what is the faculty of final knowledge? The wisdom, the understanding, for the direct experience of those states that are known, seen, attained, realized, the non-delusion, the investigation of phenomena, the right view, the investigation-enlightenment factor, a path factor, included in the path – this is called the faculty of final knowledge. Therein, what is the faculty of one who has finally known? The wisdom, the understanding, for the direct experience of those states that are finally known, seen, attained, realized, the non-delusion, the investigation of phenomena, the right view, the investigation-enlightenment factor, a path factor, included in the path – this is called the faculty of one who has finally known. Twenty-two faculties: the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, the body faculty, the mind faculty, the femininity faculty, the masculinity faculty, the life faculty, the pleasure faculty, the pain faculty, the joy faculty, the displeasure faculty, the equanimity faculty, the faith faculty, the energy faculty, the mindfulness faculty, the concentration faculty, the wisdom faculty, the faculty of 'I shall know the unknown', the faculty of final knowledge, the faculty of one who has finally known. 222. Of the twenty-two faculties, how many are wholesome, how many unwholesome, how many indeterminate? ... how many have a refuge, how many are without a refuge? 1. Triad 223. Ten faculties are indeterminate. The displeasure faculty is unwholesome. The faculty of 'I shall know the unknown' is wholesome. Four faculties may be wholesome, may be indeterminate. Six faculties may be wholesome, may be unwholesome, may be indeterminate. Twelve faculties should not be said to be 'associated with pleasant feeling', nor 'associated with painful feeling', nor 'associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling'. Six faculties may be associated with pleasant feeling, may be associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. Three faculties may be associated with pleasant feeling, may be associated with painful feeling. Associated with suffering, or associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. The life faculty may be associated with pleasant feeling, may be associated with painful feeling, may be associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, or it may not be said "associated with pleasant feeling", "associated with painful feeling", "associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling".
