the bodily knot of adherence, the canker of views, the flood of views, the dart of conceit, the consciousness-station dependent on perception, going to a bad destination due to fear— of these ten statements, the meaning is one, only the expression is different. These are the defilements of a dull person whose conduct is views. And there, the nutriment of mental volition, and the perversion of 'self in the non-self', clinging to the doctrine of self, the yoke of ignorance, the bodily knot of adherence to 'this is the truth', the canker of ignorance, the flood of ignorance, the dart of delusion, the consciousness-station dependent on volitional formations, going to a bad destination due to delusion— of these ten statements, the meaning is one, only the expression is different. These are the defilements of a proud person whose conduct is views. And there, the nutriment of edible food, and the nutriment of contact— these go to full understanding through the liberation-door of the Undesired. The nutriment of consciousness through emptiness, the nutriment of mental volition through the signless. And there, the perversion of 'beauty in the unbeautiful', and the perversion of 'pleasure in suffering'— these go to abandonment through the liberation-door of the Undesired. The perversion of 'permanence in the impermanent' through emptiness, the perversion of 'self in the non-self' through the signless. And there, clinging to sensual pleasures, and clinging to becoming— these go to abandonment through the liberation-door of the Undesired. Clinging to views through emptiness, clinging to the doctrine of self through the signless. And there, the yoke of sensual pleasures, and the yoke of becoming— these go to abandonment through the liberation-door of the Undesired. The yoke of views through emptiness, the yoke of ignorance through the signless. And there, the bodily knot of covetousness, and the bodily knot of ill-will— these go to abandonment through the liberation-door of the Undesired, pa... The bodily knot of lust by emptiness. The bodily knot of clinging to this as truth by signlessness. There, the influx of sensuality and the influx of becoming go to abandonment by the liberation door of the unconditioned. The influx of views by emptiness. The influx of ignorance by signlessness. There, the flood of sensuality and the flood of becoming go to abandonment by the liberation door of the unconditioned. The flood of views by emptiness. The flood of ignorance by signlessness. There, the dart of lust and the dart of ill-will go to abandonment by the liberation door of the unconditioned. The dart of conceit by emptiness. The dart of delusion by signlessness. There, those leading to form and the station of consciousness, those leading to feeling and the station of consciousness, go to full understanding by the liberation door of the unconditioned. Those leading to perception by emptiness. Those leading to volitional formations by signlessness. There, going astray through desire and going astray through hatred go to abandonment by the liberation door of the unconditioned. Going astray through fear by emptiness. Going astray through delusion goes to abandonment by the liberation door of the signless. Thus all phenomena following the world's round lead out. Those worlds by the three doors of liberation. 86. Therein this leading out: Four paths, four foundations of mindfulness, four jhānas, four abodes, four right strivings, four wonderful and amazing phenomena, four determinations, four developments of concentration, four qualities conducive to happiness, four immeasurables. The first path is the first foundation of mindfulness. The second path is the second foundation of mindfulness. The third path is the third foundation of mindfulness. The fourth path is the fourth foundation of mindfulness. The first foundation of mindfulness is the first jhāna. The second foundation of mindfulness is the second jhāna. The third foundation of mindfulness is the third jhāna. The fourth foundation of mindfulness is the fourth jhāna. The first jhāna is the first abode. The second jhāna is the second abode. The third jhāna is the third abode. The fourth jhāna is the fourth abode. The first abode is the first right striving. The second abiding is the second right exertion, the third abiding is the third right exertion, the fourth abiding is the fourth right exertion. The first right exertion is the first wonderful, amazing phenomenon, the second is the second, the third is the third, the fourth right exertion is the fourth wonderful, amazing phenomenon. The first wonderful, amazing phenomenon is the first determination, the second wonderful, amazing phenomenon is the second determination, the third wonderful, amazing phenomenon is the third determination, the fourth wonderful, amazing phenomenon is the fourth determination. The first determination is the first development of concentration, the second determination is the second development of concentration, the third determination is the third development of concentration, the fourth determination is the fourth development of concentration. The first development of concentration is the first phenomenon conducive to happiness, the second development of concentration is the second phenomenon conducive to happiness, the third development of concentration is the third phenomenon conducive to happiness, the fourth development of concentration is the fourth phenomenon conducive to happiness. The first phenomenon conducive to happiness is the first immeasurable, the second phenomenon conducive to happiness is the second immeasurable, the third phenomenon conducive to happiness is the third immeasurable, the fourth phenomenon conducive to happiness is the fourth immeasurable. The first practice, developed and cultivated, fulfills the first foundation of mindfulness. The second practice, developed and cultivated, fulfills the second foundation of mindfulness. The third practice, developed and cultivated, fulfills the third foundation of mindfulness. The fourth practice, developed and cultivated, fulfills the fourth foundation of mindfulness. The first foundation of mindfulness, developed and cultivated, fulfills the first jhāna. The second foundation of mindfulness, developed and cultivated, fulfills the second jhāna. The third foundation of mindfulness, developed and cultivated, fulfills the third jhāna. The fourth foundation of mindfulness, developed and cultivated, and completes the fourth jhāna. The first jhāna, developed, cultivated, completes the first abiding, the second jhāna, developed, cultivated, completes the second abiding, the third jhāna, developed, cultivated, completes the third abiding, the fourth jhāna, developed, cultivated, completes the fourth abiding. The first abiding, developed, cultivated, completes the non-arising of unarisen evil unwholesome states, the second abiding, developed, cultivated, completes the abandonment of arisen evil unwholesome states, the third abiding, developed, cultivated, completes the arising of unarisen wholesome states, the fourth abiding, developed, cultivated, completes the persistence, non-confusion, and increase of arisen wholesome states. The first right exertion, developed, cultivated, completes the abandonment of conceit, the second right exertion, developed, cultivated, completes the uprooting of attachment, the third right exertion, developed, cultivated, completes the abandonment of ignorance, the fourth right exertion, developed, cultivated, completes the calming of becoming. The abandonment of conceit, developed, cultivated, completes the determination of truth, the uprooting of attachment, developed, cultivated, completes the determination of relinquishment, the abandonment of ignorance, developed, cultivated, completes the determination of wisdom, the calming of becoming, developed, cultivated, completes the determination of peace. The determination of truth, developed, cultivated, completes the concentration of desire, the determination of relinquishment, developed, cultivated, completes the concentration of effort, the determination of wisdom, developed, cultivated, completes the concentration of mind, the determination of peace, developed, cultivated, completes the concentration of investigation. The concentration of desire, developed, cultivated, completes the restraint of the faculties, the concentration of effort, developed, cultivated, completes austerity, the concentration of mind Developed, made much of, it perfects wisdom. Investigation-concentration, developed, made much of, it perfects the relinquishing of all attachments. Sense-restraint, developed, made much of, it perfects loving-kindness. Austerity, developed, made much of, it perfects compassion. Wisdom, developed, made much of, it perfects sympathetic joy. The relinquishing of all attachments, developed, made much of, it perfects equanimity. 87. Therein, these four directions: The first practice, the first foundation of mindfulness, the first absorption, the first dwelling, the first right exertion, the first wonderful, amazing teaching, the resolve for truth, concentration of desire, sense-restraint, loving-kindness— thus the first direction. The second practice, the second foundation of mindfulness, the second dwelling, the second right exertion, the second wonderful, amazing teaching, the resolve for existence, concentration of energy, austerity, compassion— thus the second direction. The third practice, the third foundation of mindfulness, the third absorption, the third dwelling, the third right exertion, the third wonderful, amazing teaching, the resolve for wisdom, concentration of mind, wisdom, sympathetic joy— thus the third direction.
