In the third station of consciousness, the third wrong course, in the fourth station of consciousness, the fourth wrong course. 83. There, the material food, and the food of contact— these are defilements for the person of craving nature. And the food of mental volition, and the food of consciousness— these are defilements for the person of speculative view nature. There, the perversion of 'beautiful in the unbeautiful,' and the perversion of 'pleasure in suffering'— these are defilements for the person of craving nature. And the perversion of 'permanent in the impermanent,' and the perversion of 'self in the non-self'— these are defilements for the person of speculative view nature. There, the clinging to sensual pleasures, and the clinging to existence— these are defilements for the person of craving nature. And the clinging to views, and the clinging to doctrines of self— these are defilements for the person of speculative view nature. There, the bondage of sensual pleasure, and the bondage of existence, These are the defilements of a person whose nature is craving. And that which is the bond of views, and that which is the bond of ignorance, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is views. Therein, that which is the bodily knot of covetousness, and that which is the bodily knot of ill-will, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is craving. And that which is the bodily knot of clinging to rites and rituals, and that which is the bodily knot of adherence to "this is the truth," these are the defilements of a person whose nature is views. Therein, that which is the influx of sensual desire, and that which is the influx of becoming, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is craving. And that which is the influx of views, and that which is the influx of ignorance, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is views. Therein, that which is the flood of sensual desire, and that which is the flood of becoming, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is craving. And that which is the flood of views, and that which is the flood of ignorance, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is views. Therein, that which is the dart of lust, and that which is the dart of hatred, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is craving. And that which is the dart of conceit, and that which is the dart of delusion, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is views. Therein, that which is the station of consciousness associated with form, and that which is the station of consciousness associated with feeling, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is craving. And that which is the station of consciousness associated with perception, and that which is the station of consciousness associated with volitional formations, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is views. Therein, that which is going an improper course due to desire, and that which is going an improper course due to hatred, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is craving. And that which is going an improper course due to fear, and that which is going an improper course due to delusion, these are the defilements of a person whose nature is views. 84. Therein, regarding physical food, the perversion is "beautiful in the unbeautiful"; regarding contact as food, the perversion is "pleasure in suffering"; regarding consciousness as food, the perversion is "permanence in the impermanent"; regarding mental volition as food, the perversion is "self in what is not self." Standing in the first perversion, one clings to sensual pleasures; this is called clinging to sensual pleasures. Standing in the second perversion, one clings to future becoming; this is called clinging to becoming. Standing in the third perversion, one clings to the cycle of existence. He takes up a blind view, this is called clinging to views; standing in the fourth perversion, he takes up the self as proper, this is called clinging to the doctrine of self. By clinging to sensual pleasures, he is yoked to sensual pleasures, this is called the yoke of sensual pleasure; by clinging to existence, he is yoked to existences, this is called the yoke of existence; by clinging to views, he is yoked to evil views, this is called the yoke of views; by clinging to the doctrine of self, he is yoked to ignorance, this is called the yoke of ignorance. Standing in the first yoke, he binds the body with covetousness, this is called the bodily knot of covetousness; standing in the second yoke, he binds the body with ill-will, this is called the bodily knot of ill-will; standing in the third yoke, he binds the body with adherence to rites and rituals, this is called the bodily knot of adherence to rites and rituals; standing in the fourth yoke, he binds the body with dogmatic adherence to "this is the truth", this is called the bodily knot of dogmatic adherence to "this is the truth". For him, thus bound, defilements flow out. And why are they called 'flowing out'? Either from latent tendencies or from active manifestations. There, by the bodily knot of covetousness, is the outflow of sensual pleasure, by the bodily knot of ill-will, is the outflow of existence, by the bodily knot of adherence to rites and rituals, is the outflow of views, by the bodily knot of dogmatic adherence to "this is the truth", is the outflow of ignorance. For him, these four outflows, having reached fullness, become floods. Thus, the fullness of outflows is the fullness of floods. There, by the outflow of sensual pleasure, is the flood of sensual pleasure, by the outflow of existence, is the flood of existence, by the outflow of views, is the flood of views, by the outflow of ignorance, is the flood of ignorance. For him, these four floods, accompanied by latent tendencies, having penetrated the disposition, stand striking the heart, therefore they are called darts. There, by the flood of sensual pleasure, is the dart of lust, by the flood of existence, is the dart of hatred, by the flood of views, is the dart of conceit, by the flood of ignorance, is the dart of delusion. For him, consciousness, overcome by these four darts, stands firm in four things: in form, in feeling, in perception, in mental formations. There, by the dart of lust, with consciousness nourished by delight, is the station of consciousness associated with form, by the dart of hatred, with consciousness nourished by delight, associated with feeling... with the dart of conceit, by consciousness moistened with delight, the station of consciousness connected with perception; with the dart of delusion, by consciousness moistened with delight, the station of consciousness connected with volitional formations. Consciousness, supported by these four stations of consciousness, goes astray by four things: desire, hatred, fear, delusion. Therein, by lust, it goes astray through desire; by hatred, it goes astray through hatred; by fear, it goes astray through fear; by delusion, it goes astray through delusion. Thus, that action and these defilements, this is the cause of transmigration. In this way, all defilements should be pointed out with the four perversions. 85. Therein, these are the four directions: physical food, the perversion "beautiful in the unbeautiful", clinging to sensual pleasures, the yoke of sensual pleasures, the bodily fetter of covetousness, the canker of sensual pleasures, the flood of sensual pleasures, the dart of lust, the station of consciousness connected with form, going astray through desire— this is the first direction. Contact as food, the perversion "pleasure in suffering", clinging to existence, the yoke of existence, the bodily fetter of ill-will, the canker of existence, the flood of existence, the dart of hatred, the station of consciousness connected with feeling, going astray through hatred— this is the second direction. Consciousness as food, the perversion "permanence in the impermanent", clinging to views, the yoke of views, the bodily fetter of adherence to rites and rituals, the canker of views, the flood of views, the dart of conceit, the station of consciousness connected with perception, going astray through fear— this is the third direction. Mental volition as food, the perversion "self in the non-self", clinging to the doctrine of self, the yoke of ignorance, the bodily fetter of dogmatic adherence to "this is the truth", the canker of ignorance, the flood of ignorance, the dart of delusion, the station of consciousness connected with volitional formations, going astray through delusion— this is the fourth direction. Therein, what is physical food, and what is the perversion "beautiful in the unbeautiful", clinging to sensual pleasures, the yoke of sensual pleasures, the bodily fetter of covetousness, the canker of sensual pleasures, the flood of sensual pleasures, the dart of lust, the station of consciousness connected with form, going astray through desire— these ten discourses have one meaning, only the expression is different. These are the defilements for a person of lustful conduct. Therein, what is contact as food, and what is "pleasure in suffering"— The perversion of 'pleasure in suffering', clinging to becoming, the yoke of becoming, the bodily knot of ill-will, the canker of becoming, the flood of becoming, the dart of hatred, the consciousness-station dependent on feeling, going to a bad destination due to hatred— of these ten statements, the meaning is one, only the expression is different. These are the defilements of a person whose conduct is hatred. And there, the nutriment of consciousness, and the perversion of 'permanence in the impermanent', clinging to views, the yoke of views,
