The mind that has crossed boundaries does not waver in the boundaries of defilements – this is imperturbability. The mind that has attained oneness The mind, by various defilements, is not shaken – that is imperturbability. The mind grasped by faith, by lack of faith, is not shaken – that is imperturbability. The mind grasped by energy, by laziness, is not shaken – that is imperturbability. The mind grasped by mindfulness, by heedlessness, is not shaken – that is imperturbability. The mind grasped by concentration, by restlessness, is not shaken – that is imperturbability. The mind grasped by wisdom, by ignorance, is not shaken – that is imperturbability. By psychic power, these sixteen roots lead to the acquisition of psychic power, to the attainment of psychic power, to the transformation of psychic power, to the display of psychic power, to mastery over psychic power, to confidence in psychic power. Explanation of the Ten Psychic Powers 10. What is the power of determination? Here, a monk experiences various kinds of psychic power – being one, he becomes many; being many, he becomes one; manifestation and concealment; he goes unhindered through walls, through ramparts, through mountains, as if in space. He dives in and out of the earth, as if in water. He walks on water without sinking, as if on land. He travels through the air, sitting cross-legged, as if a winged bird. Even these moon and sun, so mighty, so powerful, he touches and strokes with his hand. He exercises mastery with his body even up to the Brahma-world. "Here" means: in this view, in this patience, in this preference, in this acceptance, in this Dhamma, in this Vinaya, in this Dhamma-Vinaya, in this teaching, in this holy life, in this Teacher's dispensation. Therefore it is said – "here". "Monk" means: either a noble ordinary person who is a monk, or a trainee, or an Arahant whose mind is unshakeable. "Experiences various kinds of psychic power" means: experiences psychic power of many sorts. "Being one, he becomes many" means: naturally being one, he turns into many, a hundred or a thousand or a hundred-thousand Or he adverts to the idea. Having adverted, he resolves with knowledge: "May I be many." He becomes many. Just as Venerable Cūḷapanthaka, being one, became many, so too that person endowed with psychic power, master of mind, being one, becomes many. Being many, he becomes one: naturally, being many, he adverts to one; having adverted, he resolves with knowledge: "May I be one." He becomes one. Just as Venerable Cūḷapanthaka, being many, became one, so too that person endowed with psychic power, master of mind, being many, becomes one. 11. To become visible: it is unobstructed by anything, uncovered, open, manifest. To become invisible: it is obstructed by something, covered, hidden, concealed. He goes unimpeded through walls, through ramparts, through mountains, as if through space: naturally, he is one who has attained the absorption of the space *kasiṇa*. He adverts to walls, ramparts, mountains. Having adverted, he resolves with knowledge: "May it be space." It becomes space. He goes unimpeded through walls, ramparts, mountains. Just as ordinary people, without psychic power, go unimpeded through what is unobstructed and unrestricted by anything, so too that person endowed with psychic power, master of mind, goes unimpeded through walls, ramparts, mountains, as if through space. He dives in and out of the earth, as if in water: naturally, he is one who has attained the absorption of the water *kasiṇa*. He adverts to the earth. Having adverted, he resolves with knowledge: "May it be water." It becomes water. He dives in and out of the earth. Just as ordinary people, without psychic power, dive in and out of water, so too that person endowed with psychic power, master of mind, dives in and out of the earth, as if in water. He walks on water without sinking, as if on earth: naturally, he is one who has attained the absorption of the earth *kasiṇa*. He adverts to the water. Having adverted, he resolves with knowledge: "May it be earth." Thus. It becomes earth. He walks on the water that is not broken. Just as ordinary people, without psychic power, walk on unbroken earth, even so, that person, endowed with psychic power, master of mind, walks on unbroken water, just as if on earth. In the sky, he travels cross-legged, just as a bird, a fowl, by nature. He is a master of the earth-kasina attainment. He adverts to the sky. Having adverted, he resolves with knowledge: "Let it be earth!" It becomes earth. He walks, stands, sits, and lies down in the sky, in the air. Just as ordinary people, without psychic power, walk, stand, sit, and lie down on earth, even so, that person, endowed with psychic power, master of mind, walks, stands, sits, and lies down in the sky, in the air, just as a bird, a fowl. 12. Even these moon and sun, so mighty, so powerful, he touches, strokes, and rubs with his hand. Here, that person, endowed with psychic power, master of mind, sitting or lying down, adverts to the moon and sun. Having adverted, he resolves with knowledge: "Let them be within reach!" They become within reach. He, sitting or lying down, touches, strokes, and rubs the moon and sun with his hand. Just as ordinary people, without psychic power, touch, stroke, and rub some material form within reach, even so, that person, endowed with psychic power, master of mind, sitting or lying down, touches, strokes, and rubs the moon and sun with his hand. He exercises mastery with his body even up to the Brahma-world. If that person, endowed with psychic power, master of mind, wishes to go to the Brahma-world, he resolves that what is far is near: "Let it be near!" It becomes near. He resolves that what is near is far: "Let it be far!" It becomes far. He resolves that much is little: "Let it be little!" It becomes little. He resolves that little is much: "Let it be much!" It becomes much. With the divine eye, his B He sees the form of that Brahmā. With the divine ear element, he hears the sound of that Brahmā. With knowledge of others' minds, he knows the mind of that Brahmā. If he, being endowed with psychic power, having attained mastery over the mind, wishes to go to the Brahma-world with a visible body, he transforms his mind according to his body, he determines his mind according to his body. Having transformed his mind according to his body, having determined his mind according to his body, having entered the perception of pleasure and lightness, he goes to the Brahma-world with a visible body. If he, being endowed with psychic power, having attained mastery over the mind, wishes to go to the Brahma-world with an invisible body, he transforms his body according to his mind, he determines his body according to his mind. Having transformed his body according to his mind, having determined his body according to his mind, having entered the perception of pleasure and lightness, he goes to the Brahma-world with an invisible body. Before that Brahmā, he creates a mental image, having a form, with all its limbs and minor parts, with unimpaired faculties. If he, being endowed with psychic power, walks, the created image also walks there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, stands, the created image also stands there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, sits, the created image also sits there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, lies down, the created image also lies down there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, emits smoke, the created image also emits smoke there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, blazes, the created image also blazes there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, speaks the Dhamma, the created image also speaks the Dhamma there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, asks a question, the created image also asks a question there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, answers when questioned, the created image also answers when questioned there. If he, being endowed with psychic power, converses, chats, and engages in discussion with that Brahmā, the created image also converses, chats, and engages in discussion with that Brahmā there. Whatever he, being endowed with psychic power, does, that... that he creates a divine manifestation—this is the power of determination. 13. What is the power of transformation? The disciple named Abhibhū, of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Enlightened Buddha Sikhī, standing in the Brahma-world, made the thousandfold world-system understand with his voice. He taught the Dhamma with his body visible; he taught the Dhamma with his body invisible; he taught the Dhamma with his lower half-body visible and his upper half-body invisible. He taught the Dhamma with his upper half-body visible and his lower half-body invisible. He abandoned his natural appearance and displayed the appearance of a youth, or displayed the appearance of a nāga, or displayed the appearance of a supaṇṇa, or displayed the appearance of a yakkha, or displayed the appearance of an inda, or displayed the appearance of a deva, or displayed the appearance of a brahma, or displayed the appearance of an ocean, or displayed the appearance of a mountain, or displayed the appearance of a forest, or displayed the appearance of a lion, or displayed the appearance of a tiger, or displayed the appearance of a leopard, or displayed an elephant, or displayed a horse, or displayed a chariot, or displayed infantry, or displayed various battle arrays—this is the power of transformation. 14. What is the power of mind-made body? Here, a monk creates from this body another body, material, mind-made, complete with all limbs and minor parts, with unimpaired faculties.
