Abandoning hindrances, one cultivates the first jhāna - thus accomplished in cultivation. Abandoning all defilements, one cultivates the path to arahantship - thus accomplished in cultivation. One resolves the mind by way of the path to arahantship - thus accomplished in resolution. This one, thus accomplished in cultivation, accomplished in resolution, lives evenly, not unevenly; lives rightly, not wrongly; lives purely, not defiled - thus accomplished in livelihood. He, thus, accomplished in development, accomplished in resolution, accomplished in livelihood, whatever assembly he approaches— whether an assembly of nobles, or an assembly of brahmins, or an assembly of householders, or an assembly of recluses— he approaches confidently, unperplexed.
