At Savatthi. There, indeed, the venerable Sariputta addressed the bhikkhus: "Friends, bhikkhus!" "Friend!" indeed, those bhikkhus replied to the venerable Sariputta. The venerable Sariputta said this: "These are seven, friends, factors of awakening. Which seven? The awakening factor of mindfulness, the awakening factor of investigation of states... ...the awakening factor of equanimity. These, indeed, friends, are the seven factors of awakening. Among these seven factors of awakening, friends, whichever factor of awakening I wish to dwell in during the morning, in that very factor of awakening I dwell during the morning. Whichever factor of awakening I wish to dwell in during midday... ...during the evening, in that very factor of awakening I dwell during the evening. If, friends, the awakening factor of mindfulness is present in me, it is 'immeasurable' to me, it is 'well-commenced' to me. And when it stands, I understand 'it stands'. And if it departs from me, I understand 'it departs from me due to this cause'. If, friends, the awakening factor of investigation of states... ...the awakening factor of equanimity is present in me, it is 'immeasurable' to me, it is 'well-commenced' to me. And when it stands, I understand 'it stands'. And if it departs from me, I understand 'it departs from me due to this cause'. "Just as, friends, for a king or a royal minister, there might be a full basket of clothes of various colors. Whichever pair of clothes he wishes to wear in the morning, that very pair of clothes he would wear in the morning. Whichever pair of clothes he wishes to wear in midday... ...in the evening, that very pair of clothes he would wear in the evening. Even so, friends, I, among these seven factors of awakening, whichever... By whichever enlightenment factor I wish to dwell in the morning time, By that very enlightenment factor I dwell in the morning time. By whichever enlightenment factor I wish to dwell at midday... ...or in the evening time, By that very enlightenment factor I dwell in the evening time. If, friend, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness arises in me, it is immeasurable to me, it is well-begun to me. And when it stands, I know 'it stands'. Even if it departs from me, I know 'it departs due to this cause'. ... If, friend, the enlightenment factor of equanimity arises in me, it is immeasurable to me, it is well-begun to me. How is it that 'the enlightenment factor of mindfulness arises in me' is an enlightenment factor? Insofar as it is established in cessation, so far is it the enlightenment factor of mindfulness. Thus, 'it arises in me' is an enlightenment factor. Just as for an oil lamp burning, insofar as there is flame, so far is there color; insofar as there is color, so far is there flame. Even so, insofar as it is established in cessation, so far is it the enlightenment factor of mindfulness. Thus, 'it arises in me' is an enlightenment factor. How is it that 'it is immeasurable to me' is an enlightenment factor? Defilements are bound by measure, and all mental obsessions, and those formations leading to renewed existence. Cessation is immeasurable by way of being unmoving, by way of being unconditioned. Insofar as it is established in cessation, so far is it immeasurable. Thus, 'it is immeasurable to me' is an enlightenment factor. How is it that 'it is well-begun to me' is an enlightenment factor? Defilements are uneven, and all mental obsessions, and those formations leading to renewed existence. Cessation is an even state by way of being peaceful, by way of being sublime. Insofar as it is established in cessation, so far is it well-begun. Thus, 'it is well-begun to me' is an enlightenment factor. How do I know 'when it stands, it stands'; and even if it departs, 'it departs due to this cause'? In how many ways does the enlightenment factor of mindfulness stand? In how many ways does the enlightenment factor of mindfulness How does it fall? The mindfulness enlightenment factor stands by eight modes. The mindfulness enlightenment factor falls by eight modes. Just as for an oil lamp burning, insofar as there is flame, so far there is color; insofar as there is color, so far there is flame. Even so, insofar as cessation is present, so far is the equanimity enlightenment factor an enlightenment factor. How is it an immeasurable enlightenment factor?
