In the contemplation of phenomena in the foundations of mindfulness, there are fifteen phenomena, fifteen meanings, thirty explanations, sixty kinds of knowledge. In the four foundations of mindfulness, there are sixty phenomena, sixty meanings, one hundred and twenty explanations, and four hundred and two kinds of knowledge. 3. Chapter on Bases of Power 32. “This base of power, endowed with the volitional formations of concentration due to desire, thus, bhikkhus, an eye arose in me regarding teachings unheard before…etc… light arose. And this base of power, endowed with the volitional formations of concentration due to desire, is to be developed, thus, bhikkhus, an eye arose in me…etc… it has been developed, thus, bhikkhus, an eye arose in me regarding teachings unheard before…etc… light arose. “This concentration due to energy…etc… this concentration due to mind…etc… this base of power, endowed with the volitional formations of concentration due to investigation, thus, bhikkhus, an eye arose in me regarding teachings unheard before…etc… light arose. And this base of power, endowed with the volitional formations of concentration due to investigation, is to be developed, thus, bhikkhus, an eye arose in me regarding teachings unheard before…etc… light arose.” [Ka] “‘This base of power, endowed with the volitional formations of concentration due to desire,’ thus, an eye arose in me regarding teachings unheard before…etc… light arose…etc… ‘And this base of power, endowed with the volitional formations of concentration due to desire, is to be developed’…etc… ‘it has been developed,’ thus, an eye arose in me regarding teachings unheard before, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose.” “An eye arose”—in what sense? “Knowledge arose”—in what sense? “Wisdom arose”—in what sense? “True knowledge arose”—in what sense? “Light arose”—in what sense? “An eye arose”—in the sense of seeing. “Knowledge arose”—in the sense of knowing. “Wisdom arose”—in the sense of understanding. “True knowledge arose”—in the sense of penetration. “Light arose”—in the sense of illumination. The eye is a phenomenon, knowledge is a phenomenon, wi Knowledge is Dhamma, wisdom is Dhamma, light is Dhamma. These five dhammas are both objects and ranges for dhammapaṭisambhidā. What are its objects, those are its ranges. What are its ranges, those are its objects. Therefore it is said – "Knowledge of dhammas is dhammapaṭisambhidā." Meaning is seeing, meaning is knowing, meaning is understanding, meaning is penetrating, meaning is illuminating. These five meanings are both objects and ranges for atthapaṭisambhidā. What are its objects, those are its ranges. What are its ranges, those are its objects. Therefore it is said – "Knowledge of meanings is atthapaṭisambhidā." Expressions of language and speech to demonstrate five dhammas, expressions of language and speech to demonstrate five meanings. These ten expressions are both objects and ranges for niruttipaṭisambhidā. What are its objects, those are its ranges. What are its ranges, those are its objects. Therefore it is said – "Knowledge of expressions is niruttipaṭisambhidā." Knowledges regarding five dhammas, knowledges regarding five meanings, knowledges regarding ten expressions. These twenty knowledges are both objects and ranges for paṭibhānapaṭisambhidā. What are its objects, those are its ranges. What are its ranges, those are its objects. Therefore it is said – "Knowledge of expositions is paṭibhānapaṭisambhidā." In the base of power endowed with concentration of desire and volitional formations of exertion: fifteen dhammas, fifteen meanings, thirty expressions, sixty knowledges. "This concentration of energy (etc.) this concentration of mind (etc.) this base of power endowed with concentration of investigation and volitional formations of exertion" – in dhammas unheard before, vision arose (etc.) light arose (etc.) "And this base of power endowed with concentration of investigation and volitional formations of exertion is to be developed (etc.) has been developed" – in dhammas unheard before, vision arose (etc.) light arose (etc.) In the base of power endowed with concentration of investigation and volitional formations of exertion... The Chapter on the Seven Bodhisattas 33. “‘Origin, origin,’ indeed, monks, for the Bodhisatta Vipassī, regarding states unheard before, the eye arose…and light arose. ‘Cessation, cessation,’ indeed, monks, for the Bodhisatta Vipassī, regarding states unheard before, the eye arose…and light arose.” In the declaration of the Bodhisatta Vipassī, ten qualities, ten meanings, twenty expressions, forty knowledges. “‘Origin, origin,’ indeed, monks, for the Bodhisatta Sikhī… for the Bodhisatta Vessabhū… for the Bodhisatta Kakusandha… for the Bodhisatta Koṇāgamana… for the Bodhisatta Kassapa, regarding states unheard before, the eye arose…and light arose. ‘Cessation, cessation,’ indeed, monks, for the Bodhisatta Kassapa, regarding states unheard before, the eye arose…and light arose.” In the declaration of the Bodhisatta Kassapa, ten qualities, ten meanings, twenty expressions, forty knowledges. “‘Origin, origin,’ indeed, monks, for the Bodhisatta Gotama, regarding states unheard before, the eye arose…and light arose. ‘Cessation, cessation,’ indeed, monks, for the Bodhisatta Gotama, regarding states unheard before, the eye arose…and light arose.” In the declaration of the Bodhisatta Gotama, ten qualities, ten meanings, twenty expressions, forty knowledges.
