Five concentrations: pervasion of rapture, pervasion of happiness, pervasion of mind, pervasion of light, the sign of reviewing. Six concentrations: one-pointedness of mind, non-distraction, concentration by way of recollection of the Buddha; one-pointedness of mind by way of recollection of the Dhamma, concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction; concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction, by way of recollection of the Saṅgha; concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction, by way of recollection of virtue; concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction, by way of recollection of generosity; concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction, by way of recollection of deities. Seven concentrations: skill in concentration, skill in entering concentration, skill in abiding in concentration, skill in emerging from concentration, skill in the readiness of concentration, skill in the range of concentration, skill in the application of concentration. Eight concentrations: concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction, by way of the earth kasiṇa; ... by way of the water kasiṇa; ... by way of the fire kasiṇa; ... by way of the wind kasiṇa; ... by way of the blue kasiṇa; ... by way of the yellow kasiṇa; ... by way of the red kasiṇa; concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction, by way of the white kasiṇa. Nine concentrations: there is concentration in the realm of form, which is inferior, which is medium, which is excellent; there is concentration in the formless realm, which is inferior, which is medium, which is excellent; the void concentration, the signless concentration, the desireless concentration. Ten concentrations: concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction, by way of the perception of a bloated corpse; ... by way of the perception of a discolored corpse; ... by way of the perception of a festering corpse; ... by way of the perception of a cut-up corpse; ... by way of the perception of a gnawed corpse; ... by way of the perception of a scattered corpse; ... by way of the perception of a dismembered corpse; ... by way of the perception of a bloody corpse; ... by way of the perception of a worm-infested corpse; concentration is the singleness of mind, non-distraction, by way of the perception of a skeleton. These are fifty-five concentrations. 44. Furthermore, there are twenty-five bases of concentration: concentration in the sense of comprehension, concentration in the sense of accompaniment, concentration in the sense of fulfillment, concentration in the sense of singleness, concentration in the sense of non-distraction, concentration in the sense of non-dispersion, concentration in the sense of purity, concentration in the sense of immobility, concentration in the sense of liberation, concentration is the abiding of the mind by way of the manifestation of oneness... It seeks what is even, thus concentration. It does not seek what is uneven, thus concentration. Because it has sought what is even, thus concentration. Because it has not sought what is uneven, thus concentration. It takes what is even, thus concentration. It does not take what is uneven, thus concentration. Because it has taken what is even, thus concentration. Because it has not taken what is uneven, thus concentration. It practices what is even, thus concentration. It does not practice what is uneven, thus concentration. Because it has practiced what is even, thus concentration. Because it has not practiced what is uneven, thus concentration. It meditates evenly, thus concentration. It burns away unevenness, thus concentration. Because it has meditated evenly, thus concentration. Because it has burned away unevenness, thus concentration. It is even, and beneficial, and pleasant, thus concentration. These are the twenty-five foundations of concentration. That, by way of knowing, is knowledge; by way of understanding, is wisdom. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom in restraining and concentrating, knowledge in the development of concentration." The third chapter: Explanation of Knowledge Pertaining to the Development of Concentration. 4. Explanation of Knowledge of the Stability of Dhamma 45. How is wisdom in comprehending conditions the knowledge of the stability of Dhamma? Ignorance is the stability of origination, the stability of continuation, the stability of signs, the stability of accumulation, the stability of connection, the stability of obstruction, the stability of arising, the stability of cause, and the stability of condition for formations. By these nine modes, ignorance is the condition, and formations are conditionally arisen. Both these phenomena are conditionally arisen – wisdom in comprehending conditions is the knowledge of the stability of Dhamma. Even in the past… even in the future, ignorance is the stability of origination, the stability of continuation, the stability of signs, the stability of accumulation, the stability of connection, the stability of obstruction, the stability of arising, the stability of cause, and the stability of condition for formations. By these nine modes, ignorance is the condition, and formations are conditionally arisen. Both these phenomena are conditionally arisen – wisdom in comprehending conditions is the knowledge of the stability of Dhamma. Formations are for consciousness… …and so on… consciousness is for name-and-form… name-and-form is for the six sense bases… the six sense bases are for contact… contact is for feeling… feeling is for craving… craving is for clinging… clinging is for becoming… becoming is for birth. … birth is the condition for old age and death and the condition of arising, and the condition of continuing, and the condition of a sign, and the condition of accumulation, and the condition of connection, and the condition of hindrance, and the condition of origin, and the condition of cause, and the condition of condition. By these nine modes, birth is the condition, old age and death are conditionally arisen. Both these phenomena are conditionally arisen – wisdom in comprehending conditions is knowledge of the stability of phenomena. In the past time… in the future time, birth is the condition for old age and death and the condition of arising, and the condition of continuing, and the condition of a sign, and the condition of accumulation, and the condition of connection, and the condition of hindrance, and the condition of origin, and the condition of cause, and the condition of condition. By these nine modes, birth is the condition, old age and death are conditionally arisen. Both these phenomena are conditionally arisen – wisdom in comprehending conditions is knowledge of the stability of phenomena. 46. Ignorance is the cause, volitional formations are causally arisen. Both these phenomena are causally arisen – wisdom in comprehending conditions is knowledge of the stability of phenomena. In the past time… in the future time, ignorance is the cause, volitional formations are causally arisen. Both these phenomena are causally arisen – wisdom in comprehending conditions is knowledge of the stability of phenomena. Volitional formations are the cause, consciousness is causally arisen… Consciousness is the cause, name-and-form is causally arisen… Name-and-form is the cause, the six sense bases are causally arisen… The six sense bases are the cause, contact is causally arisen… Contact is the cause, feeling is causally arisen… Feeling is the cause, craving is causally arisen… Craving is the cause, clinging is causally arisen… Clinging is the cause, becoming is causally arisen… Becoming is the cause, birth is causally arisen… Birth is the cause, old age and death are causally arisen. Both these phenomena are causally arisen – wisdom in comprehending conditions is knowledge of the stability of phenomena. In the past time… in the future time, birth is the cause, old age and death are causally arisen. Both these phenomena are causally arisen – wisdom in comprehending conditions is knowledge of the stability of phenomena. Dependent on ignorance, volitional formations (arise). Dependently arisen. Both these phenomena are dependently arisen – the wisdom of comprehending conditions, the knowledge of the stability of phenomena. In the past time... in the future time, dependent on ignorance, formations arise dependently. Both these phenomena are dependently arisen – the wisdom of comprehending conditions, the knowledge of the stability of phenomena. Dependent on formations, consciousness arises dependently. Dependent on consciousness, name-and-form arises dependently. Dependent on name-and-form, the six sense bases arise dependently. Dependent on the six sense bases, contact arises dependently. Dependent on contact, feeling arises dependently. Dependent on feeling, craving arises dependently. Dependent on craving, clinging arises dependently. Dependent on clinging, becoming arises dependently. Dependent on becoming, birth arises dependently. Dependent on birth, old age and death arise dependently. Both these phenomena are dependently arisen – the wisdom of comprehending conditions, the knowledge of the stability of phenomena. In the past time... in the future time, dependent on birth, old age and death arise dependently. Both these phenomena are dependently arisen – the wisdom of comprehending conditions, the knowledge of the stability of phenomena. Ignorance is the condition, formations are conditioned by it. Both these phenomena are conditioned by a condition – the wisdom of comprehending conditions, the knowledge of the stability of phenomena. In the past time... in the future time, ignorance is the condition, formations are conditioned by it. Both these phenomena are conditioned by a condition – the wisdom of comprehending conditions, the knowledge of the stability of phenomena. Formations are the condition, consciousness is conditioned by them.
