The Apadāna of Ghatamaṇḍadāyaka Thera 78. The Well-Gone One, the Blessed One, foremost in the world, a bull among men; Seated in the great forest, afflicted by a wind-disorder. 79. Seeing him, I gladdened my mind, and offered ghee-cream; Due to that deed, accumulated, this Gaṅgā, Bhāgīrathī. 80. The four great oceans, become ghee for me; And this fearsome earth, immeasurable, countless. 81. Knowing my resolve, becomes honey and sugar; These trees of the four continents, plants, earth-growers. 82. Knowing my resolve, they become wish-fulfilling trees; Fifty times, as lord of devas, I ruled the deva kingdom. 83. And fifty-one times, I was a wheel-turning monarch; Vast regional rule, countless in number. 84. Ninety-four aeons ago, the gift I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the ghee-cream. 85. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without taints. 86. Welcome indeed it was for me... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 87. The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Ghatamaṇḍadāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna is of Ghatamaṇḍadāyaka Thera. 7. The Apadāna of Ekadhammassavaniya Thera 88. The Conqueror named Padumuttara, gone to the far shore of all dhammas; Proclaiming the Four Noble Truths, he brought peace to many people. 89. At that time I was an ascetic with matted hair, of great austerity; Waving bark garments, I was going in the sky then. 90. Above the Best of Buddhas, I was unable to go; Like a bird striking a rock, I could not proceed. 91. Having walked on water, thus I go in the sky; This had never happened to me before, a disturbance of my posture. 92. Well then, I will search for this, perhaps I might find the reason; Descending from the sky, I heard the voice of the Teacher. 93. With a captivating, pleasant, delightful voice, As he spoke of impermanence, I grasped that very thing then; Having grasped the perception of impermanence, I went to my hermitage. 94. Having lived there for as long as my life lasted, I passed away; When my last moment was occurring, I remembered the hearing of the True Dhamma. 95. By that well-performed deed, and by my aspirations, Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa heaven. 96. For thirty thousand kappas, I rejoiced in the deva world; And fifty-one times, I ruled as king of devas. 97. And twenty-one times, I was a Wheel-turning Monarch; Vast regional kingdoms, countless in number. 98. I experience my own merit, I am happy in existence after existence; I remember that perception, wandering on in existence after existence; I did not penetrate the ultimate point, Nibbāna, the deathless state. 99. Sitting in my father's house, the recluse with developed faculties; Expounding, illuminating, he spoke of impermanence. 100. "Impermanent, alas, are formations, by nature arising and passing away; Having arisen, they cease, their cessation is bliss." 101. Having heard the verse immediately, I remembered my former perception; Having sat in one sitting, I attained Arahantship. 102. At the age of seven years, I attained Arahantship; The Buddha ordained me, this is the fruit of hearing the Dhamma. 103. A hundred thousand kappas ago, that Dhamma which I heard then; To a bad destination, I did not... I know, this is the fruit of hearing the Dhamma. 104. My defilements are burnt away… I dwell without taints. 105. Welcome indeed it was for me… The Buddha's teaching has been done. 106. The four analytical knowledges… The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Elder Ekadhammassavaniya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Ekadhammassavaniya, the seventh. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Sucintita 107. In the city of Haṃsavatī, I was then a farmer; I lived by farming, With it, I supported my children. 108. Then my field was well-provided, My grain was fruitful; And when harvest time arrived, Thus I thought then. 109. It is not fitting, not proper, For one who knows good and bad; If I, without giving to the Saṅgha, Should then eat the best. 110. This Buddha is incomparable, Possessing the thirty-two excellent marks; From him, the Saṅgha is manifested, The unsurpassed field of merit. 111. There I will give a gift, Of new grain, again and again; Thus I thought, Joyful and with a gladdened mind. 112. Having brought grain from the field, I approached the Fully Awakened One; Having approached the Fully Awakened One, The chief of the world, the bull among men; Having worshipped the Teacher's feet, I spoke this word. 113. "The new grain is ready, And you are the recipient, O Sage; Taking compassion, Please accept, O Seer." 114. Padumuttara, the knower of the world, The receiver of offerings; Knowing my intention, Spoke this word. 115. "Four are on the path, Four are established in the fruit; This Saṅgha is upright, Endowed with wisdom and virtue; For humans who offer sacrifices, For beings seeking merit. 116. "It produces abundant merit, A gift given to the Saṅgha is greatly fruitful; To that very Saṅgha, Your grain and other things should be given. 117. "Having designated from the Saṅgha, Having led the bhikkhus..." come to my house; What is prepared in the house, give it to the community of bhikkhus.’ 118. Having designated from the Sangha, and brought the bhikkhus to my house; What was prepared in my house, I gave it to the community of bhikkhus. 119. By that well-done deed, and by my aspirations; Having abandoned my human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 120. There for me, a well-made mansion, golden and resplendent; Sixty yojanas high, thirty yojanas wide. The Nineteenth Recitation Section. 121. My dwelling is crowded, filled with groups of women; Having eaten and drunk there, I dwell among the gods. 122. Three hundred times, I ruled as king of gods; Five hundred times, I was a universal monarch; Vast regional rule, countless in number. 123. Wandering through existences, I obtain immeasurable wealth; There is no lack in my enjoyments, this is the fruit of new harvest. 124. Elephant vehicles, horse vehicles, and flowing palanquins; I obtain all of these, this is the fruit of new harvest. 125. New clothes, new fruits, new and excellent food; I obtain all of these, this is the fruit of new harvest. 126. Silk and woollen garments, and linen and cotton ones; I obtain all of these, this is the fruit of new harvest. 127. Groups of female servants, groups of male servants, and adorned women; I obtain all of these, this is the fruit of new harvest. 128. Neither cold nor heat, nor feverish heat exists for me; Also mental suffering, does not exist in my heart. 129. “Eat this, enjoy this, sleep on this couch”; I obtain all of these, this is the fruit of new harvest. 130. Now this is my last, my final existence; Even now my gift-offering, always satisfies with its fruit. 131. Having given new harvest, to the Sangha, the supreme community; I experience eight benefits, fitting for my deed. 132. (I am) beautiful, glorious I am, of great fortune, free from trouble; I am always of great retinue, always of an unassailable assembly. 133. All those who dwell on earth Revere me; Whatever offerings there are, I always receive them first. 134. Whether in the midst of the Sangha of monks, Or in the presence of the Chief Buddha; Surpassing all others, Givers give to me alone. 135. Having first given the new harvest To the excellent community of the Sangha; I experience these benefits, This is the fruit of the new harvest. 136. A hundred thousand aeons ago, The gift I gave then; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of the new harvest. 137. My defilements are burnt away… I dwell without taints. 138. Welcome indeed it was for me… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 139. The four analytical knowledges… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Elder Sucintita Thera spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Sucintita is the eighth. 9. The Apadāna of Elder Sovaṇṇakiṅkaṇiya 140. Having gone forth with faith, I renounced the household life; I wore bark-cloth robes, Devoted to ascetic practices. 141. The Blessed One, Atthadassī, Chief of the world, bull among men, Arose at that time, Saving the great multitude. 142. My strength was indeed exhausted, By a supreme illness; Remembering the Chief Buddha, I made an excellent stupa on the sand. 143. Having made it, with a joyful mind, I scattered with my own hands Golden bell-flowers, With a mind full of delight. 144. As if in the presence of the Fully Enlightened One, I worshipped the stupa; By that mental clarity, Towards the Such-one Atthadassī. 145. Having gone to the world of devas, I obtain abundant happiness; There I was golden-colored, This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 146. Eighty crores of women, Adorned, Always attend upon me, This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 147. Sixty thousand musical instruments, Drums and tabors; Conches and drums there, melodious drums resound. 148. Eighty-four thousand elephants adorned; with ichor flowing in three streams, sixty-year-old elephants. 149. Covered with golden nets, they attend upon me; in the army, and in elephants, no deficiency is found in me. 150. Of the golden bell-flowers, I experience the result; and fifty-eight times, I ruled as king of devas. 151. And seventy-one times, I was a Wheel-turning Monarch; one hundred times, the rule of the earth, I exercised on this earth. 152. Now I have attained the Deathless, the unconditioned, very hard to see; my fetters are exhausted, there is no more rebirth. 153. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, when I offered the flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 154. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 155. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 156. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done.
