Homage to the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. Minor Collection Chronicle of the Therāpadāna (Part Two) 43. The Chapter of Sakiṃsammajjaka 1. The Apadāna of Thera Sakiṃsammajjaka 1. “Seeing the excellent Pāṭalī Bodhi tree of the Blessed Vipassī, I then made my mind serene towards that chief of trees. 2. Taking a broom, I swept the Bodhi tree immediately. Having swept that Bodhi tree, I bowed to the Pāṭalī. 3. Having made my mind serene there, placing my hands together on my head, bowing to that Bodhi tree, I went to my hut. 4. I was walking on that path, remembering the excellent Bodhi tree. A huge and powerful python crushed me. 5. The deed I had done nearby pleased me with its fruit. My body was swallowed, but I delighted in the deva-world. 6. My mind is unclouded, pure and bright always. I know no arrow of sorrow, no torment of mind. 7. Leprosy, boils, skin diseases, epilepsy, itch, ringworm, and scabies are not for me; this is the fruit of sweeping. 8. Sorrow and lamentation are not in my heart. My mind is unagitated and upright; this is the fruit of sweeping. 9. I do not cling to concentrations; my mind is clear. Whatever concentration I desire, that one is accomplished for me. 10. I am not infatuated with what causes passion, nor with what causes aversion. I am not deluded by what causes delusion; this is the fruit of sweeping. 11. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I performed that deed, I do not know any bad destination; this is the fruit of sweeping. 12. My defilements are burnt up, all existences are uprooted. Like a Nāga breaking its bonds, I dwell without taints. 13. It was indeed a good arrival for me, in the presence of my Buddha. The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha’s teaching is done. 14. The analytical knowledges… Here are four, and eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching done.''. The Apadāna of the Elder Ekadussadāyaka 15. ‘‘In the city of Haṃsavatī, I was a grass-carrier; By carrying grass I lived, with that I supported my children. 16. ‘‘A Victor named Padumuttara, gone beyond all phenomena; Destroying that darkness, the leader of the world arose. 17. ‘‘Sitting in my own house, I thought thus at that time; ‘A Buddha has arisen in the world, but I have no offering. 18. ‘‘‘This one cloak is mine, I have no other giver; Painful is the touch of hell, I will plant a meritorious deed.’ 19. ‘‘Thus having thought, I gladdened my mind; Taking one cloth, I gave it to the best of Buddhas. 20. ‘‘Having given one cloth, I uttered a shout of joy; ‘If you are a Buddha, O hero, save me, O great sage.’ 21. ‘‘Padumuttara, knower of worlds, receiver of offerings; Proclaiming my gift, he gave me his approval. 22. ‘‘‘By this one cloth, and by your aspiration and resolve; For a hundred thousand aeons, you will not go to a state of woe. 23. ‘‘‘Thirty-six times as king of devas, you will rule the deva kingdom; Thirty-three times as king, you will be a wheel-turning monarch. 24. ‘‘‘Vast regional kingship, countless in number; In the deva world or among humans, you will exist while transmigrating. 25. ‘‘‘Handsome, endowed with virtues, with an unblemished body; You will obtain an immeasurable, inexhaustible supply of cloth, as you wish.’ 26. ‘‘Having said this, the Fully Awakened One, named Jalajuttama; The hero ascended into the sky, like a king of swans in the atmosphere. 27. ‘‘Whatever birth I attained, whether divine or human; There was no lack in my enjoyments, this is the fruit of one cloth. fruit. 28. “With every step, with every step, a cloth is produced for me; Below the cloth I stand, it is my upper covering. 29. “Taking the whole world, with its forests and mountains; If I wished today, I could cover it with cloths. 30. “With that one cloth, wandering through existences; Having become golden-hued, I wander through existences. 31. “The result of that one cloth, I have never found its exhaustion anywhere; This is my last birth, it ripens for me even here. 32. “A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I gave that cloth; I have not known a bad destination, this is the fruit of that one cloth. 33. “My defilements are burnt away… I dwell without taints. 34. “Welcome indeed it was for me… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 35. “The four analytical knowledges… the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed did the Elder Ekadussadāyaka utter these verses; The Apadāna of the Elder Ekadussadāyaka, the second. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Ekāsanadāyaka 36. “Not far from the Himalayas, is a mountain named Gosita; My hermitage was well-made, my leaf-hut well-constructed. 37. “Nārada by name, they knew me as Kassapa; Seeking the path to purity, I dwelt in Gosita then. 38. “Padumuttara by name, the Conqueror, one who has crossed over all phenomena; The Fully Awakened One, desiring solitude, came like the wind. 39. “Seeing the radiance of the Great Seer, as he walked through the forest top; I arranged a wooden couch, and spread a deer-skin on it. 40. “Having prepared a seat, and made an añjali with my hands to my head; Expressing my joy, I spoke these words. 41. “‘Great surgeon, great hero, healer of the sick; Give healing to me, who am afflicted with disease, O Leader. 42. “‘Those who see you, O best of Buddhas, O sage, desiring welfare; They attain the certain success of their aims, for them there is no old age. 43. “‘I have no gift to give, I am one who enjoys the fruits of what has arisen; This is There is a seat for me, I have nothing to give you, sit on the wooden bench. 44. The Blessed One sat there, undaunted like a lion; After a moment passed, he spoke these words. 45. Be at ease, do not fear, the essence of light has been gained by you; All that you have wished for, will be fulfilled in the future. 46. That which you have done is not in vain, in the unsurpassed field of merit; One can uplift oneself, whose mind is well-directed. 47. By this gift of a seat, and by these aspirations; For a hundred thousand aeons, you will not go to a state of woe. 48. Fifty times as king of devas, you will rule the deva realm; Eighty times as a king, you will be a wheel-turning monarch. 49. Vast regional rule, innumerable by count; Being happy everywhere, you will wander in transmigration. 50. Having said this, the Enlightened One, named the best of water-born, The hero ascended to the sky, like a swan king in the firmament. 51. Elephant vehicles, horse vehicles, chariots rushing forth; I obtain all of these, this is the fruit of one seat. 52. Even having entered a forest, whenever I wish for a seat; Understanding my intention, a couch appears. 53. Being in the midst of water, whenever I wish for a seat; Understanding my intention, a couch appears. 54. Whatever birth I take, whether divine or human; Hundreds of thousands of couches, always surround me. 55. I wander in two existences, in the divine and in the human; I am born in two families, in the warrior and in the brahmin. 56. Having given one seat, in the unsurpassed field of merit; Taking the seat of Dhamma, I dwell without defilements. 57. A hundred thousand aeons ago, the gift I gave then; I do not know a state of woe, this is the fruit of one seat. laṃ. 58. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without defilements. 59. Truly, well-come it was for me... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. 60. The four analytical knowledges... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus, indeed, the Venerable Elder, the Giver of One Seat, recited these verses. The Third Apadāna of the Elder, the Giver of One Seat. 4. The Apadāna of the Elder, the Giver of Seven Kadamba Flowers 61. Not far from the Himalayas, was a mountain named Kadamba; At the foot of that mountain, seven Buddhas dwelt. 62. Seeing a blooming Kadamba, raising my joined hands in reverence; Taking seven garlands, I scattered them with a meritorious mind. 63. By that well-done deed, and by my aspirations; Abandoning my human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 64. Ninety-four aeons ago, the deed I did then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 65. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without defilements. 66. Truly, well-come it was for me... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. 67. The four analytical knowledges... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus, indeed, the Venerable Elder, the Giver of Seven Kadamba Flowers, recited these verses. The Fourth Apadāna of the Elder, the Giver of Seven Kadamba Flowers. 5. The Apadāna of the Elder, the Giver of Koraṇḍa Flowers 68. Formerly, I was a forest worker, by my father's and mother's wish; I lived by killing animals, no merit was found in me. 69. Near my dwelling, Tissa, the leader of the world, showed three footprints, out of compassion, the one with vision. 70. And seeing the trodden footprints of the Teacher named Tissa; Delighted, with a delighted mind, I gladdened my mind towards the footprints. 71. Seeing a blooming Koraṇḍa, a tree growing on the earth; Taking it with its calyx, I worshipped the supreme footprints. 72. By that well-done deed, and by my aspirations; Abandoning my human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. Sixth. 73. Whichever birth I take, whether divine or human; Like a Koraṇḍa flower, I become brightly shining. 74. Ninety-two aeons ago, the kamma I performed then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the feet. 75. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without taints. 76. Welcome indeed it was for me... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 77. The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done.
