And became stainless and pure; That wise teacher of mine, Was a disciple named Assaji. 369. By his help today, I became the General of the Dhamma; Having reached perfection in all things, I dwell without defilements. 370. My teacher, A disciple named Assaji; In whichever direction he dwells, , I make it my head-ornament. 371. “Recalling my deeds, Gotama, the Sakyan bull, Seated in the assembly of monks, Placed me in the foremost position. 372. My defilements are burnt away, All existences are uprooted. Like a Nāga breaking its bonds, I dwell without defilements. 373. “Welcome indeed was my coming To the presence of the best of Buddhas; The three knowledges are attained, The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 374. “The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed did the Elder Sāriputta Recite these verses. The Aapadāna of Elder Mahāmoggallāna 375. “Anomadassī, the Blessed One, The chief of the world, the bull among men, Dwelt in the Himalayas, Surrounded by a host of deities. 376. “Varuṇa by name, I was then a Nāga king; Capable of assuming any form, I transformed myself, Dwelling in the great ocean. 377. “Leaving my retinue, I sent forth music; Surrounding the Fully Awakened One, The celestial nymphs then played. 378. “As the instruments were being played, The deities played their instruments; Hearing the sound of both, The Buddha also awoke. 379. “Having invited the Fully Awakened One, I went to my abode; Having prepared a seat, I announced the time. 380. “Surrounded by a thousand Arahants, The leader of the world, Illuminating all directions, Came to my abode. 381. “The great hero, the god of gods, the bull among men, Having sat down, I then satisfied him and the assembly of monks With food and drink. 382. “The great hero, the self-existent, the foremost person, Approved; Seated in the assembly of monks, He spoke these verses. 383. “‘He who honored the Saṅgha, And the Buddha, the leader of the world; By him with a clear mind, he will go to the world of devas. 384. “‘Seventy-seven times, he will be king of devas; For one hundred and eight times, he will rule the earth. 385. “‘Fifty-five times, he will be a Wheel-turning Monarch; Incalculable riches, will arise for him at once. 386. “‘After immeasurable eons from now, born into the Okkāka clan; A Teacher named Gotama, will appear in the world. 387. “‘Having fallen from hell, he will attain human existence; Named Kolita, he will be a kinsman of Brahmā. 388. “‘Later, having gone forth, urged by roots of skillfulness; He will be the second disciple, of the Blessed One Gotama. 389. “‘With aroused energy, resolute, having reached the perfection of psychic power; Having fully understood all defilements, he will attain Nibbāna, without defilements.’ 390. “Relying on bad friends, having fallen under the sway of sensual desire; I killed my mother and father, with a wicked mind. 391. “Whatever womb I was reborn into, hell or human; Associated with evil deeds, I died with a broken head. 392. “This is my last, my final existence is occurring; Here too, such will be my state, at the time of death. 393. “Devoted to seclusion, delighting in the development of concentration; Having fully understood all defilements, I dwell without defilements. 394. “Even the deep, thick, impenetrable earth; I could shake with my left big toe, having reached the perfection of psychic power. 395. “I do not see the conceit ‘I am’, conceit does not exist for me; Even towards novice monks, I show respect. 396. “After immeasurable eons from now, the kamma I performed; I have reached that state, I have attained the destruction of defilements. 397. “The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha’s teaching is done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Venerable Mahāmoggallāna spoke these verses. The Aapadāna of the Elder Mahāmoggallāna, the second. 3-3. The Aapadāna of the Elder Mahākassapa 398. “Pad Of the Blessed One, Umuttara, The world's chief, the steadfast one; When the world's protector had attained Nibbāna, They offered homage to the Teacher. 399. "The people, with uplifted hearts, Rejoiced and were greatly gladdened; As they were filled with awe, Joy arose in me. 400. "Having gathered my relatives and friends, I spoke these words: The Great Hero has attained final Nibbāna, Come, let us offer homage. 401. "Good!" they replied, And caused me even greater joy; To the Buddha, the world's protector, We shall accumulate merit. 402. "Having made a well-crafted offering, A hundred cubits high; Spread one and a half cubits wide, A mansion rising to the sky. 403. "Having built a palace there, Adorned with rows of palm trees; Having purified my own mind, I paid supreme homage to the shrine. 404. "Like a blazing mass of fire, Like a blossoming kiṃsuka tree; Like Indra's staff in the sky, It illuminated the four directions. 405. "Having purified my mind there, And performed much wholesome action; Remembering my former deed, I was reborn among the Tāvatiṃsa gods. 406. "Seated in a divine chariot, Drawn by a thousand horses; My lofty palace, Rose seven stories high. 407. "Thousands of pinnacled mansions, Were all made of gold; They shone with their own splendor, Illuminating all directions. 408. "There were other projections, Made of coral then; They too shone with radiance, All around in the four directions. 409. "Pinnacled mansions, well-constructed, Produced by deeds of merit; Made of jewels, also shone, In all ten directions all around. 410. "As they shone brightly, A vast radiance arose; I surpassed all the gods, This is the fruit of my meritorious deed. 411. "In sixty thousand aeons, I was a king named Ubbiddha; A conqueror of the four continents, I ruled the earth. 412. "Likewise, in this auspicious aeon, I was thirty times; Delighting in my own deeds, A mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 413. "Endowed with the seven jewels, Lord of the four continents; Even there, my palace, Was like Indra's staff had arisen. 414. “Twenty-four in length, and twelve in width; The city named Rammaṇa, with strong walls and gates. 415. “Five hundred in length, and half of that in width; Crowded with people, like the city of the Tidasas. 416. “Just as twenty-five needles, thrown into a needle-case; Strike against each other, it becomes crowded and entangled. 417. “Even so was my city, thronged with elephants, horses, and chariots; Always crowded with people, Rammaṇa, the excellent city. 418. “Having eaten and drunk there, I again attained divinity. In my last existence, there was family prosperity. 419. “Born into a brahmin family, with a great accumulation of treasures; Having abandoned eighty crores, even of gold, I went forth. 420. “The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Mahākassapa Thera spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Anuruddha 421. “I saw the Blessed One Sumedha, the foremost of the world, the bull among men; Dwelling in seclusion, the leader of the world. 422. “Having approached the Fully Enlightened One, Sumedha, the leader of the world; Having raised my joined hands, I implored the best of Buddhas. 423. “Have compassion, Great Hero, foremost of the world, bull among men; I will offer you a lamp, while you meditate at the foot of a tree. 424. “That wise one, the self-existent, the best of speakers, assented; Having pierced through the trees, I then set up a mechanism. 425. “I offered a thousand-wick lamp, to the Buddha, the kinsman of the world; Having burned for seven days, my lamps went out. 426. “By that clarity of mind, and by the aspirations of my will; Having abandoned the human body, I was reborn in a celestial mansion. 427. “When I was reborn as a deity, a mansion was well-built; All around it shines, this is the fruit of the lamp-offering. 428. All around for a hundred leagues, I shone forth at that time; I outshone all the devas, this is the fruit of the lamp-offering. 429. For thirty kappas as king of devas, I reigned as king of devas; No one ever despises me, this is the fruit of the lamp-offering. 430. And twenty-eight times, I was a Wheel-turning Monarch; Day and night I saw, all around for a league at that time. 431. With knowledge I see a thousand worlds, in the Teacher's Dispensation; I have attained the divine eye, this is the fruit of the lamp-offering. 432. The Fully Awakened One named Sumedha, thirty thousand kappas ago; To him a lamp was given by me, with a mind full of faith. 433. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's Dispensation has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Venerable Anuruddha spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Anuruddha, the fourth. 3-5. The Apadāna of Elder Puṇṇamantaṇiputta 434. A reciter, a mantra-holder, one who had mastered the three Vedas; Surrounded by disciples, I approached the best of men. 435. Padumuttara, the knower of worlds, the recipient of offerings; He proclaimed my kamma, the Great Sage, in brief. 436. Having heard that Dhamma, and having saluted the Teacher; Having raised my joined hands, I departed facing south. 437. Having heard it in brief, I expounded it in detail; All the disciples were delighted, having heard my discourse; Having abandoned their own views, they made their minds serene in the Buddha. 438. I teach in brief, and likewise in detail; I am skilled in the method of Abhidhamma, through the purity of the Kathāvatthu; Having enlightened everyone, I dwell without defilements. 439.
