The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching is done. 595. "The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done." Thus indeed, the Elder Upāli spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna of Elder Upāli. 3-7. The Apadāna of Elder Aññāsikoṇḍañña 596. "The Perfectly Awakened Padumuttara, the world's chief, the leader; Who had attained the Buddha-state, him I saw first. 597. "As far as the root of the Bodhi tree, all the yakkhas gathered; Surrounding the Perfectly Awakened One, they worshipped with clasped hands. 598. "All the devas, with joyful minds, they moved about in the sky; 'This Buddha has appeared, the dispeller of dark darkness.' 599. "Of those filled with joy, a great roar arose; 'We shall burn away defilements, in the teaching of the Perfectly Awakened One.' 600. "Understanding the devas' speech, I uttered a joyful sound; Delighted with a delighted mind, I gave the first alms. 601. "Knowing my resolve, the Teacher, unsurpassed in the world; Sitting in the assembly of devas, spoke these verses. 602. "'Having gone forth for seven days, I attained enlightenment; This is my first meal, the sustenance for a celibate one. 603. "'He who came here from Tusita, and brought me alms; Him I shall extol, listen as I speak. 604. "'For thirty thousand kappas, he will rule as king of devas; Overcoming all devas, he will dwell in the heaven. 605. "'Having fallen from the deva world, he will attain human existence; A thousandfold cakkav..." there, he will rule the kingdom. 606. “‘In a hundred thousand aeons, born in the Okkāka clan; Gotama by name, a Teacher will appear in the world. 607. “‘He will descend from the Tāvatiṃsa heaven, and attain human existence; He will go forth from home, and dwell for six years. 608. “‘Then in the seventh year, the Buddha will declare the truth; Koṇḍañña by name, will be the first to realize it.’ 609. Having gone forth, I followed him, my striving was well done; To burn away defilements, I went forth into homelessness. 610. Having approached the Omniscient One, the Buddha in the world with its devas; In the deer park named Isinā, he beat the drum of immortality. 611. Now I have attained immortality, the unsurpassed state of peace; Having fully understood all defilements, I dwell without taints. 612. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha’s teaching is accomplished.” Thus indeed did the Venerable Aññāsikoṇḍañña Thera utter these verses. The Aapadāna of Aññāsikoṇḍañña Thera, the seventh. 3-8. The Aapadāna of Piṇḍolabhāradvāja Thera 613. Padumuttara by name, the Victor, the Self-Existent, the foremost person; In front of the Himalayas, he dwelt on Cittakūṭa then. 614. I was there, fearless, a lion, a four-footed king; Hearing his roar, many people were terrified. 615. Taking a fully bloomed lotus, I approached the best of men; To the Buddha, risen from meditation, I offered it. 616. Having saluted in the four directions, the best of Buddhas, the supreme man; Having purified my mind, I roared a lion's roar. 617. Padumuttara, the knower of the world, the recipient of offerings; Seated on his own seat, uttered these verses. 618. “Having understood the Buddha’s word, all the devas have gathered; The best of speakers has come, we shall hear his Dhamma. 619. “‘ To those overcome with laughter, before them, the world-leader; my deed he proclaimed, the far-seeing Great Sage. 620. By whom this lotus was given, and a lion's roar was uttered; that I shall proclaim, listen to my words. 621. From here, in the eighth eon, a Wheel-turning Monarch will be; endowed with seven jewels, a lord over the four continents. 622. He will exercise sovereignty, over sixty-four lands; Paduma by name, a Wheel-turning Monarch of great power. 623. In a hundred thousand eons, born of the Okkāka clan; Gotama by clan name, a Teacher will be in the world. 624. When the teaching is proclaimed, a brahmin kinsman will be; having gone forth from the brahmin state, he will immediately go forth. 625. He, with mind intent on exertion, peaceful, without substratum; having fully understood all defilements, will attain Nibbāna, without defilements. 626. In a solitary, remote dwelling, frequented by wild animals; having fully understood all defilements, will attain Nibbāna, without defilements. 627. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; the six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Piṇḍolabhāradvāja spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna of Elder Piṇḍolabhāradvāja. 3-9. The Apadāna of Elder Khadiravaniyarevatatthera 628. The river Gaṅgā, named Bhāgīrathī, originating from the Himalayas; I was a ferryman at a bad ford, and I ferried to the near bank. 629. The leader Padumuttara, the Fully Awakened One, supreme among bipeds; with a hundred thousand perfected ones, approached the bank of the Gaṅgā. 630. Having brought many boats together, well-constructed by carpenters; having made a covering for the boat, I waited for the bull among men. 631. And the Fully Awakened One, having come, boarded that boat; the Teacher, standing in the midst of the water, spoke these verses. He who ferried the Fully Awakened One, and also the Sangha, free from defilements; By that clarity of mind, he will delight in the world of devas. A mansion will arise for you, well-made, not fixed (on the ground); a canopy of flowers in the sky, it will hold always. In the fifty-eighth eon, a king named Tāraka; a conqueror of the four continents, a Wheel-turning Monarch will he be. In the fifty-seventh eon, a king named Cammaka; like the rising sun, he will shine with great power. In a hundred thousand eons, born in the Okkāka lineage; by clan name Gotama, a Teacher will be in the world. Having passed away from the devas, he will go to human existence; by name Revata, he will be a kinsman of Brahmā. Having left the household life, urged by his wholesome roots; in the Dispensation of the Blessed Gotama, he will go forth. Having gone forth later, diligent in practice, a meditator; having fully understood all defilements, he will attain Nibbāna, free from defilements. My energy is like a burden-bearing yoke, leading to security from bondage; I bear my final body, in the Dispensation of the Perfectly Awakened One. The deed done a hundred thousand (eons ago), has shown its fruit to me here; like a well-shot arrow, it has burned up my defilements. Then, seeing me delighting in the forest, the sage, the end-of-the-world-goer; among the forest-dwelling bhikkhus, as foremost, the great wise one declared me. Having emerged from the monastery gate, the Great Sage Padumuttara; showering the rain of immortality, extinguished (the suffering of) the great multitude. A hundred thousand of those wise ones, with six supernormal powers, great in might; surrounded the Fully Awakened One, like a shadow Unfailing. 646. I was upon an elephant's shoulder, a supreme white parasol; Seeing its beautiful form, joy arose in me. 647. Descending from the elephant's shoulder, I approached the chief of men; My jewel-studded parasol, I held for the best of Buddhas. 648. Knowing my intention, Padumuttara, the great sage, Having set aside that talk, spoke these verses: 649. 'He who held the parasol, adorned with golden ornaments, I will praise him; listen to my words. 650. Going from here, this person, will dwell in Tusita; He will experience prosperity, surrounded by celestial nymphs. 651. And thirty-four times, he will be king of devas; One hundred and eight times as a powerful ruler, he will rule the earth. 652. And fifty-eight times, he will be a Wheel-turning Monarch; A vast regional kingship, he will cause to be on earth. 653. In a hundred thousand aeons, born in the Okkāka lineage, Gotama by clan name, a Teacher will be in the world. 654. For the banner of the Sakya clan, he will be a relative and kinsman; Ānanda by name, the attendant of the great sage. 655. Diligent and also skillful, very expert in much learning; Of humble conduct, not arrogant, he will be a master of all recitations. 656. He, with mind directed to exertion, peaceful, without substratum; Having fully understood all defilements, he will attain Nibbāna, free from defilements. 657. There are forest elephants, sixty years old elephants; Elephants with three streams, with tusks like plough-poles, mighty. 658. Many hundreds of thousands, wise and mighty, All of them, for the Buddha-elephant, are not equal to his resolve.' 659. I paid homage in the first watch, then in the middle and last; With a clear and joyful mind, I attended the best of Buddhas. 660. Diligent and also skillful, with clear comprehension and mindfulness; I attained the fruit of stream-entry, expert in the stages of training. 661. From a hundred thousand k Ah, the deed I performed; By that I have attained the state, standing firm in the True Dhamma, unshakeable. 662. “Welcome indeed it was for me, in the presence of the Best of Buddhas; The three knowledges have been attained, the Buddha’s teaching has been fulfilled. 663. “The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers have been realized, the Buddha’s teaching has been fulfilled.” Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Ananda spoke these verses. The Tenth Apadāna of Elder Ananda. Its Summary – Buddha and Paccekabuddha, Sariputta and Kolita; Kassapa and Anuruddha, Elder Punna and Upali; Aññāsi Koṇḍañña, Piṇḍola, Revata, Ananda, Paṇḍita; Six hundred and fifty verses in total.
