Which are those seven qualities, developed and made much of, that complete two qualities?” “The concentration on in-and-out breathing, monks, is that one quality, developed and made much of, that completes the four foundations of mindfulness. The four foundations of mindfulness, developed and made much of, complete the seven factors of awakening. The seven factors of awakening, developed and made much of, complete knowledge and liberation.” “How, monks, is the concentration on in-and-out breathing developed, how made much of, so that it completes the four foundations of mindfulness?” “Here, monks, a monk gone to the forest... ...Thus developed, monks, are the seven factors of awakening, thus made much of, so that they complete knowledge and liberation.” The Fifth. 6. The Second Monk's Said. 992. Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Blessed One. Having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. As they were sitting to one side, the Blessed One said to those bhikkhus: "Is there, bhikkhus, one quality, developed and cultivated, that perfects four qualities? Do four qualities, developed and cultivated, perfect seven qualities? Do seven qualities, developed and cultivated, perfect two qualities?" "Our teachings, venerable sir, have the Blessed One as their root... The bhikkhus will remember what they hear from the Blessed One." "There is, bhikkhus, one quality, developed and cultivated, that perfects four qualities. Four qualities, developed and cultivated, perfect seven qualities. Seven qualities, developed and cultivated, perfect two qualities." "And what, bhikkhus, is that one quality, developed and cultivated, that perfects four qualities? What are those four qualities, developed and cultivated, that perfect seven qualities? What are those seven qualities, developed and cultivated, that perfect two qualities? The concentration of mindfulness of breathing, bhikkhus, is that one quality, developed and cultivated, that perfects the four foundations of mindfulness. The four foundations of mindfulness, developed and cultivated, perfect the seven factors of awakening. The seven factors of awakening, developed and cultivated, perfect knowledge and liberation. "And how, bhikkhus, is the concentration of mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so as to perfect the four foundations of mindfulness? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, gone to the forest, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, sits down, having folded his legs crosswise, set his body erect, and established mindfulness in front of him. Mindfully he breathes in, mindfully he breathes out... He trains himself: 'I will breathe in contemplating relinquishment.' He trains himself: 'I will breathe out contemplating relinquishment.'" "At the time, bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu, breathing in long, understands: 'I breathe in long,' or breathing out long, understands: 'I breathe out long,' He understands, 'I breathe in'; Breathing in short, he understands, 'I breathe in short'; Breathing out short, he understands, 'I breathe out short'; Experiencing the whole body, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe in'; Experiencing the whole body, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe out'; 'I shall breathe in, calming the bodily formation,' he trains himself. 'I shall breathe out, calming the bodily formation,' he trains himself. A monk, bhikkhus, at that time dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world. For what reason? I declare, bhikkhus, that this — breathing in and breathing out — is a certain kind of body. Therefore, bhikkhus, a monk at that time dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world. At the time, bhikkhus, when a monk experiences rapture, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe in'; Experiences rapture, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe out'; Experiences pleasure, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe in'; Experiences pleasure, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe out'; Experiences mental formation, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe in'; Experiences mental formation, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe out'; 'I shall breathe in, calming the mental formation,' he trains himself. 'I shall breathe out, calming the mental formation,' he trains himself. A monk, bhikkhus, at that time dwells contemplating feelings in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world. For what reason? I declare, bhikkhus, that this — careful attention to breathing in and breathing out — is a certain kind of feeling. Therefore, bhikkhus, a monk at that time dwells contemplating feelings in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world. At the time, bhikkhus, when a monk experiences the mind, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe in'; Experiences the mind, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe out'; Gladdening the mind, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe in'; Gladdening the mind, he trains himself, 'I shall breathe out'; 'I shall breathe in, concentrating the mind,' he trains himself. 'I shall breathe out, concentrating the mind,' he trains himself. 'I shall breathe in, liberating the mind,' he trains himself. 'I shall breathe out, liberating the mind,' he trains himself. A monk, bhikkhus, at that time dwells contemplating mind in mind, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world. For what reason? I declare, bhikkhus, that the development of mindfulness of breathing concentration is not for one who is unmindful and lacks clear comprehension. Therefore, Now, monks, a monk observing mind in mind at that time dwells ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world. When, monks, a monk observes impermanence, observes dispassion, observes cessation, 'I shall breathe in observing relinquishment,' he trains; 'I shall breathe out observing relinquishment,' he trains— observing phenomena in phenomena, monks, a monk at that time dwells ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world. He, having seen with wisdom the abandoning of covetousness and displeasure, thoroughly looks on with equanimity. Therefore, monks, a monk observing phenomena in phenomena at that time dwells ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in the world. Thus developed, monks, the concentration on mindfulness of breathing, thus cultivated, fulfills the four foundations of mindfulness. And how, monks, are the four foundations of mindfulness developed, how cultivated, so as to fulfill the seven factors of awakening? When, monks, a monk dwells observing body in body— mindfulness is established in him at that time, unconfused. When, monks, mindfulness is established in a monk, unconfused— the mindfulness factor of awakening is aroused in him at that time, the monk develops the mindfulness factor of awakening at that time, the mindfulness factor of awakening at that time goes to its culmination by development. He, thus mindful, dwelling, investigates that phenomenon with wisdom, examines it, makes a thorough inquiry into it. When, monks, a monk, thus mindful, dwelling, investigates that phenomenon with wisdom, examines it, makes a thorough inquiry into it— the investigation-of-phenomena factor of awakening is aroused in him at that time, the monk develops the investigation-of-phenomena factor of awakening at that time, the investigation-of-phenomena factor of awakening at that time in the monk reaches the culmination of development. "As he discerns that teaching with wisdom, examines it, investigates it thoroughly, unflagging energy is aroused. At that time, monks, when unflagging energy is aroused in a monk as he discerns that teaching with wisdom, examines it, investigates it thoroughly— the enlightenment factor of energy is aroused in him at that time, he develops the enlightenment factor of energy at that time, the enlightenment factor of energy reaches the culmination of development in him at that time. "For one with aroused energy, unworldly joy arises. At that time, monks, when unworldly joy arises in a monk with aroused energy— the enlightenment factor of joy is aroused in him at that time, he develops the enlightenment factor of joy at that time, the enlightenment factor of joy reaches the culmination of development in him at that time. "For one with a joyful mind, the body becomes tranquil, the mind also becomes tranquil. At that time, monks, when the body becomes tranquil and the mind also becomes tranquil for a monk with a joyful mind— the enlightenment factor of tranquility is aroused in him at that time, he develops the enlightenment factor of tranquility at that time, the enlightenment factor of tranquility reaches the culmination of development in him at that time. "For one whose body is tranquil and happy, the mind becomes concentrated. At that time, monks, when the mind becomes concentrated for a monk whose body is tranquil and happy— the enlightenment factor of concentration is aroused in him at that time, he develops the enlightenment factor of concentration at that time, the enlightenment factor of concentration reaches the culmination of development in him at that time. "He then looks on with perfect equanimity at that mind so concentrated. At that time, monks, when a monk looks on with perfect equanimity at that mind so concentrated— the enlightenment factor of equanimity is aroused in him at that time, the enlightenment factor of equanimity... he develops the factor of enlightenment, the equanimity factor of enlightenment reaches full development for that bhikkhu at that time. “Monks, when a bhikkhu dwells contemplating phenomena in feelings… in mind…
