it leads to enlightenment. The faculty of energy is a quality conducive to enlightenment; it leads to enlightenment. The faculty of mindfulness is a quality conducive to enlightenment; it leads to enlightenment. The faculty of concentration... A quality conducive to awakening, that leads to awakening; the faculty of wisdom is a quality conducive to awakening, that leads to awakening. Just as, monks, whatever living beings are animal-born, the lion, king of beasts, is declared the foremost among them, namely – in strength, in speed, in courage; even so, monks, whatever qualities conducive to awakening there are, the faculty of wisdom is declared the foremost among them, namely – for awakening. The First. 2. The Discourse on Mallika 522. Thus have I heard: On one occasion the Blessed One was staying among the Mallians, at a Mallian town named Uruvelakappa. There the Blessed One addressed the monks: “As long as, monks, noble knowledge has not arisen in a noble disciple, not yet is there stability of the four faculties, not yet is there firm establishment of the four faculties. But when, monks, noble knowledge has arisen in a noble disciple, then there is stability of the four faculties, then there is firm establishment of the four faculties.” “Just as, monks, as long as the peak of a peaked house has not been raised, not yet is there stability of the rafters, not yet is there firm establishment of the rafters. But when, monks, the peak of a peaked house has been raised, then there is stability of the rafters, then there is firm establishment of the rafters. Even so, monks, as long as noble knowledge has not arisen in a noble disciple, not yet is there stability of the four faculties, not yet is there firm establishment of the four faculties. But when, monks, noble knowledge has arisen in a noble disciple, then there is stability of the four faculties… …then there is firm establishment.” “Of which four? Of the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration. Monks, for a noble disciple who is wise, faith is established in accordance with that, energy is established in accordance with that, mindfulness is established in accordance with that. it is established, connected to that, concentration is established. The Second. 3. The Learner Discourse 523. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Kosambī, in Ghosita's Park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Is there, bhikkhus, a way by which a learner bhikkhu, standing on the ground of a learner, might know 'I am a learner', and a non-learner bhikkhu, standing on the ground of a non-learner, might know 'I am a non-learner'?" "Our teachings, venerable sir, have the Blessed One as their root..." "There is, bhikkhus, a way by which a learner bhikkhu, standing on the ground of a learner, might know 'I am a learner', and a non-learner bhikkhu, standing on the ground of a non-learner, might know 'I am a non-learner'." "And what, bhikkhus, is the way by which a learner bhikkhu, standing on the ground of a learner, knows 'I am a learner'? Here, bhikkhus, a learner bhikkhu knows 'This is suffering' as it really is, knows 'This is the origin of suffering' as it really is, knows 'This is the cessation of suffering' as it really is, knows 'This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering' as it really is. This too, bhikkhus, is a way by which a learner bhikkhu, standing on the ground of a learner, knows 'I am a learner'." "Furthermore, bhikkhus, a learner bhikkhu reflects thus: 'Is there, outside of this, any other ascetic or brahmin who teaches such a true, real Dhamma as the Blessed One?' He knows thus: 'There is not, outside of this, any other ascetic or brahmin who teaches such a true, real Dhamma as the Blessed One.' This too, bhikkhus, is a way by which a learner bhikkhu, standing on the ground of a learner, knows 'I am a learner'." "Furthermore, bhikkhus, a learner bhikkhu understands the five faculties: the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom – what is their course, what is their what is their ultimate, what is their fruit, what is their end. He does not dwell having touched them with the body; but he sees having penetrated with wisdom. This too, bhikkhus, is a way by which a trainee bhikkhu, standing on the trainee's ground, understands 'I am a trainee'." "And what, bhikkhus, is the way by which an accomplished bhikkhu, standing on the accomplished one's ground, understands 'I am accomplished'? Here, bhikkhus, an accomplished bhikkhu understands the five faculties – the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom – what is their course, what is their ultimate, what is their fruit, what is their end. And he dwells having touched them with the body; and he sees having penetrated with wisdom. This too, bhikkhus, is a way by which an accomplished bhikkhu, standing on the accomplished one's ground, understands 'I am accomplished'." "Furthermore, bhikkhus, an accomplished bhikkhu understands the six faculties. 'The faculty of sight, the faculty of hearing, the faculty of smell, the faculty of taste, the faculty of touch, the faculty of mind – these six faculties will cease completely, entirely, without remainder; and no other six faculties will arise anywhere, in any way,' he understands. This too, bhikkhus, is a way by which an accomplished bhikkhu, standing on the accomplished one's ground, understands 'I am accomplished'." Thus, the third. 4. The Discourse on the Footprint 524. "Just as, bhikkhus, whatever footprints there are of moving creatures, all of them are encompassed by the elephant's footprint; the elephant's footprint is declared the chief of them, that is, by its greatness; even so, bhikkhus, whatever factors lead to awakening, the faculty of wisdom is declared the chief factor among them, that is, for awakening. And what, bhikkhus, are the factors that lead to awakening? The faculty of faith, bhikkhus, is a factor; it leads to awakening. The faculty of energy is a factor; it leads to awakening." That which leads to: The faculty of mindfulness, a path, it leads to awakening. The faculty of concentration, a path, it leads to awakening. The faculty of wisdom, a path, it leads to awakening. Just as, monks, whatever footprints of jungle creatures, all of them merge into the elephant's footprint. The elephant's footprint is declared the foremost among them, that is – by its greatness; even so, monks, whatever paths lead to awakening, the faculty of wisdom is declared the foremost path among them, that is – for awakening. The Fourth. 5. The Essence Discourse 525. Just as, monks, whatever scents of heartwood, red sandalwood is declared the foremost among them; even so, monks, whatever qualities conducive to awakening, the faculty of wisdom is declared the foremost among them, that is – for awakening. And what, monks, are the qualities conducive to awakening? The faculty of faith, monks, is a quality conducive to awakening, it leads to awakening. The faculty of energy is a quality conducive to awakening, it leads to awakening. The faculty of mindfulness is a quality conducive to awakening, it leads to awakening. The faculty of concentration is a quality conducive to awakening, it leads to awakening. The faculty of wisdom is a quality conducive to awakening, it leads to awakening. Just as, monks, whatever scents of heartwood, red sandalwood is declared the foremost among them; even so, monks, whatever qualities conducive to awakening, the faculty of wisdom is declared the foremost among them, that is – for awakening. The Fifth. 6. The Established Discourse 526. For a monk, monks, established in one quality, the five faculties are developed, well-developed. In which one quality? In heedfulness. And what, monks, is heedfulness? Here, monks, a monk guards his mind against the taints and against qualities associated with taints. As he guards his mind against the taints and against qualities associated with taints, the faculty of faith also goes to the fulfillment of development. The faculty of energy also goes to the fulfillment of development. The faculty of mindfulness also goes to the fulfillment of development. The faculty of concentration also goes to the fulfillment of development. The faculty of wisdom also goes to the fulfillment of development. comes to fulfillment. In this way, monks, for a monk established in one quality, the five faculties are developed, are well-developed.” The Sixth. 7. The Sahampati Brahma Sutta 527. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling in Uruvelā, on the bank of the Nerañjarā River, at the Ajapāla Banyan Tree, just after his full enlightenment. Then, as the Blessed One was in seclusion, alone, this thought arose in his mind: “The five faculties, when developed, when made much of, have the Deathless as their ground, have the Deathless as their destination, have the Deathless as their culmination. Which five? The faculty of faith, when developed, when made much of, has the Deathless as its ground, has the Deathless as its destination, has the Deathless as its culmination. The faculty of energy… the faculty of mindfulness… the faculty of concentration… the faculty of wisdom, when developed, when made much of, has the Deathless as its ground, has the Deathless as its destination, has the Deathless as its culmination. These five faculties, when developed, when made much of, have the Deathless as their ground, have the Deathless as their destination, have the Deathless as their culmination.” Then Brahmā Sahampati, having understood the thought in the Blessed One’s mind with his own mind— just as a strong man might extend his bent arm or bend his extended arm— even so, he vanished from the Brahmā world and appeared before the Blessed One. Then Brahmā Sahampati,
