And what, monks, are the qualities pertaining to enlightenment? The faculty of faith, monks, is a quality pertaining to enlightenment, it leads to enlightenment. The faculty of energy... ...the faculty of mindfulness... ...the faculty of concentration... ...the faculty of wisdom, is a quality pertaining to enlightenment, it leads to enlightenment. Just as, monks, whatever trees there are of the Tāvatiṃsa gods, the Pārichattaka tree is declared to be the foremost among them; even so, monks, whatever qualities pertain to enlightenment, the faculty of wisdom is declared to be the foremost among them, that is, for enlightenment. The Eighth. 9. The Third Discourse on Trees Just as, monks, whatever trees there are of the Asuras, the Cittapāṭali tree is declared to be the foremost among them; even so, monks, whatever qualities pertain to enlightenment, the faculty of wisdom is declared to be the foremost among them, that is, for enlightenment. And what, monks, are the qualities pertaining to enlightenment? The faculty of faith, monks, is a quality pertaining to enlightenment, it leads to enlightenment... ...the faculty of wisdom, is a quality pertaining to enlightenment, it leads to enlightenment. The Fourth Tree Discourse 540. “Just as, bhikkhus, whatever trees there are for birds, the silk-cotton tree is declared the best among them; even so, bhikkhus, whatever qualities there are conducive to awakening, the faculty of wisdom is declared the best among them, namely, for awakening. And what, bhikkhus, are the qualities conducive to awakening? The faculty of faith, bhikkhus, is a quality conducive to awakening, it leads to awakening… the faculty of wisdom is a quality conducive to awakening, it leads to awakening. Just as, bhikkhus, whatever trees there are for birds, the silk-cotton tree is declared the best among them; even so, bhikkhus, whatever qualities there are conducive to awakening, the faculty of wisdom is declared the best among them, namely, for awakening.” The tenth. The Dozen Discourses Beginning with "Eastward" 541-552. “Just as, bhikkhus, the river Ganges flows eastward, inclines eastward, slopes eastward; even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the five faculties, cultivating the five faculties, flows towards Nibbāna, inclines towards Nibbāna, slopes towards Nibbāna. The Chapter on Search is to be elaborated. Its Summary – Search, kinds, influx, and becoming, three kinds of suffering; Fallow land, and defilement, and affliction, feeling, craving, thirst. 12. The Chapter on Floods 1-10. The Decad of Discourses beginning with Floods 587-596. "Monks, these five are the higher fetters. Which five? Attachment to form, attachment to formlessness, conceit, restlessness, ignorance – these, monks, are the five higher fetters. For the direct knowledge, full understanding, utter destruction, and abandonment of these five higher fetters, these five faculties are to be developed. Which five? Here, monks, a monk develops the faculty of faith, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment... develops the faculty of wisdom, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. For the direct knowledge, full understanding, utter destruction, and abandonment of these five higher fetters, these five faculties are to be developed." The Tenth.
