Connected Discourses on the Faculties 1. The Simple Chapter 1. The Simple Discourse At Sāvatthī. “These five, monks, are faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith, The faculty of energy, The faculty of mindfulness, The faculty of concentration, The faculty of wisdom – These, indeed, monks, are the five faculties.” The first. 2. The First Discourse on the Stream-Enterer “These five, monks, are faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith, The faculty of energy, The faculty of mindfulness, The faculty of concentration, The faculty of wisdom. When, indeed, monks, a noble disciple truly understands the gratification, the danger, and the escape of these five faculties – this is called, monks, a noble disciple who is a stream-enterer, not subject to falling into lower states, assured, destined for full enlightenment.” The second. 3. The Second Discourse on the Stream-Enterer “These five, monks, are faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith, The faculty of energy, The faculty of mindfulness, The faculty of concentration, The faculty of wisdom. When, indeed, monks, a noble disciple truly understands the origin, the disappearance, the gratification, the danger, and the escape of these five faculties – this is called, monks, a noble disciple who is a stream-enterer, not subject to falling into lower states, assured, destined for full enlightenment.” The third. 4. The First Discourse on the Arahant “These five, monks, are faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith, The faculty of energy, The faculty of mindfulness, The faculty of concentration, The faculty of wisdom. When, indeed, monks, a noble disciple, having truly known the gratification, the danger, and the escape of these five faculties, becomes liberated without clinging – this is called, monks, a bhikkhu who is an Arahant, whose defilements are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, who has done what had to be done, who has laid down the burden, who has attained his own true goal, whose fetters of existence are utterly destroyed, s rightly liberated by wisdom.” The fourth. 5. Second Arahant Sutta 475. “Monks, there are these five faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom. When, monks, a bhikkhu, having rightly understood the arising, the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape from these five faculties, is liberated without clinging—this, monks, is called a bhikkhu who is an arahant, whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, who has done what had to be done, who has laid down the burden, who has attained his own goal, whose fetters of existence are utterly destroyed, who is rightly liberated by wisdom.” The fifth. 6. First Ascetics and Brahmins Sutta 476. “Monks, there are these five faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith…the faculty of wisdom. Whatever ascetics or brahmins, monks, do not rightly understand the gratification, the danger, and the escape from these five faculties—these, monks, are not considered by me as ascetics among ascetics, or as brahmins among brahmins. Nor do these venerable ones, having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge, enter upon and abide in the goal of asceticism or the goal of brahminhood in this very life. “But whatever ascetics or brahmins, monks, rightly understand the arising, the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape from these five faculties—these, monks, are considered by me as ascetics among ascetics, and as brahmins among brahmins. And these venerable ones, having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge, enter upon and abide in the goal of asceticism and the goal of brahminhood in this very life.” The sixth. 7. Second Ascetics and Brahmins Sutta 477. “Whatever ascetics or brahmins, monks, do not understand the faculty of faith, do not understand the arising of the faculty of faith, do not understand the cessation of the faculty of faith, do not they do not know, they do not know the path leading to the cessation of the faculty of faith; they do not know the faculty of energy… they do not know the faculty of mindfulness… they do not know the faculty of concentration… they do not know the faculty of wisdom, they do not know the origin of the faculty of wisdom, they do not know the cessation of the faculty of wisdom, they do not know the path leading to the cessation of the faculty of wisdom. These, bhikkhus, are not considered recluses or brahmins among recluses or brahmins. Nor do these venerable ones, having realized for themselves with direct knowledge, enter and dwell in the goal of recluseship or brahminhood in this very life. But those, bhikkhus, who know the faculty of faith, who know the origin of the faculty of faith, who know the cessation of the faculty of faith, who know the path leading to the cessation of the faculty of faith; who know the faculty of energy, who know the origin of the faculty of energy, who know the cessation of the faculty of energy, who know the path leading to the cessation of the faculty of energy; who know the faculty of mindfulness… who know the faculty of concentration… who know the faculty of wisdom, who know the origin of the faculty of wisdom, who know the cessation of the faculty of wisdom, who know the path leading to the cessation of the faculty of wisdom. These, bhikkhus, are considered recluses among recluses and brahmins among brahmins. And these venerable ones, having realized for themselves with direct knowledge, enter and dwell in the goal of recluseship and brahminhood in this very life. The Seventh. 8. The Discourse on What Should Be Seen 478. "There are, bhikkhus, these five faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith… …the faculty of wisdom. And where, bhikkhus, should the faculty of faith be seen? In the four factors of stream-entry— there the faculty of faith should be seen. And where, bhikkhus, should the faculty of energy be seen? In the four right exertions— there the faculty of energy should be seen. And where, And where, monks, is the faculty of mindfulness to be seen? In the four foundations of mindfulness – there the faculty of mindfulness is to be seen. And where, monks, is the faculty of concentration to be seen? In the four jhānas – there the faculty of concentration is to be seen. And where, monks, is the faculty of wisdom to be seen? In the four noble truths – there the faculty of wisdom is to be seen. These, monks, are the five faculties. The Eighth. These five, monks, are faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom. And what, monks, is the faculty of faith? Here, monks, a noble disciple is endowed with faith, he has faith in the Tathāgata's enlightenment – 'Indeed, that Blessed One is an Arahant, a Fully Self-Awakened One, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, fortunate, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, the Awakened One, the Blessed One' – This, monks, is called the faculty of faith. And what, monks, is the faculty of energy? Here, monks, a noble disciple dwells with aroused energy for the abandoning of unwholesome states, for the acquiring of wholesome states, steadfast, firm in exertion, not laying aside the burden in wholesome states – This, monks, is called the faculty of energy. And what, monks, is the faculty of mindfulness? Here, monks, a noble disciple is mindful, endowed with supreme mindfulness and circumspection, remembering and recollecting what was done and said long ago – This, monks, is called the faculty of mindfulness. And what, monks, is the faculty of concentration? Here, monks, a noble disciple, having made relinquishment the object, gains concentration, gains one-pointedness of mind – This, monks, is called the faculty of concentration. And what, monks, is the faculty of wisdom? Here, monks, a noble disciple is wise, endowed with wisdom that sees rise and fall, noble, penetrative, leading to the right destruction of suffering – This, monks, is called the faculty of wisdom. These, indeed, monks, are the five faculties. Ninth. 10. The Second Analysis Discourse 480. These five, monks, are faculties. Which five? The faculty of faith... (and so on) ...the faculty of wisdom. And what, monks, is the faculty of faith? Here, monks, a noble disciple is faithful, he has faith in the Tathāgata's enlightenment – 'Indeed, that Blessed One is an Arahant, a Fully Self-Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Fortunate One, a Knower of the world, an unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, a teacher of gods and humans, the Awakened One, the Blessed One' – This is called, monks, the faculty of faith. And what, monks, is the faculty of energy? Here, monks, a noble disciple dwells with aroused energy for the abandoning of unwholesome states, for the acquiring of wholesome states, stout, firm in exertion, not laying down the burden in wholesome states. He generates desire for the non-arising of unarisen evil unwholesome states, he endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, strives; for the abandoning of arisen evil unwholesome states, he generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, strives; for the arising of unarisen wholesome states, he generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, strives; for the maintenance of arisen wholesome states, for their non-confusion, for their increase, for their development, for their fulfillment, he generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, strives – This is called, monks, the faculty of energy. And what, monks, is the faculty of mindfulness? Here, monks, a noble disciple is mindful, endowed with supreme mindfulness and clear comprehension, remembering and recollecting what was done and said long ago.
