culminating in relinquishment; ...and so on... develops right concentration supported by seclusion, supported by dispassion, supported by cessation, culminating in relinquishment. Thus, monks, a diligent monk... He develops the noble eightfold path, he cultivates the noble eightfold path. As far as, monks, there are beings: whether footless or two-footed, or four-footed or many-footed; whether with form or formless; whether percipient or non-percipient, or neither percipient nor non-percipient— the Tathāgata is declared to be the foremost among them, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One. Just so, monks, whatever wholesome states there are, all of them have heedfulness as their root, they converge in heedfulness; heedfulness is declared to be the foremost of those states. This, monks, is to be expected of a heedful monk: he will develop the noble eightfold path, he will cultivate the noble eightfold path. And how, monks, does a heedful monk develop the noble eightfold path, cultivate the noble eightfold path? Here, monks, a monk develops right view, ending in the removal of lust, ending in the removal of hatred, ending in the removal of delusion… …he develops right concentration, ending in the removal of lust, ending in the removal of hatred, ending in the removal of delusion. Thus, monks, does a heedful monk develop the noble eightfold path, cultivate the noble eightfold path. As far as, monks, there are beings: whether footless or two-footed, or four-footed or many-footed; whether with form or formless; whether percipient or non-percipient, or neither percipient nor non-percipient— the Tathāgata is declared to be the foremost among them, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One. Thus, indeed, bhikkhus, a monk, being diligent, develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes the Noble Eightfold Path abundant. ‘‘As far as, bhikkhus, beings are footless, or two-footed, or four-footed, or many-footed, or with form, or formless, or percipient, or non-percipient, or neither percipient nor non-percipient, the Tathāgata is declared to be the foremost among them, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One; even so, indeed, bhikkhus, whatever wholesome qualities there are, all of them have diligence as their root, converge on diligence; diligence is declared to be the foremost among those qualities. Thus, indeed, bhikkhus, a monk, being diligent, develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes the Noble Eightfold Path abundant. The First. 2. The Discourse on Footprints 140. ‘‘Just as, bhikkhus, whatever footprints of jungle animals there are, all of them are encompassed by the elephant's footprint; the elephant's footprint is declared to be the foremost among them, that is – by its greatness; even so, indeed, bhikkhus, whatever wholesome qualities there are, all of them have diligence as their root, converge on diligence; diligence is declared to be the foremost among those qualities. For a diligent monk, bhikkhus, this is to be expected – that he will develop the Noble Eightfold Path, will make the Noble Eightfold Path abundant. And how, bhikkhus, does a monk, being diligent, the Noble Eightfold… what path does he develop, the Noble Eightfold Path does he make much of? Here, monks, a bhikkhu develops right view, dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, culminating in relinquishment... ...he develops right concentration, dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, culminating in relinquishment... Thus, monks, a bhikkhu, being diligent, develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path. Second. 3-7. The Five Suttas Beginning with "Peaked House" Just as, monks, whatever rafters there are of a peaked house, all of them go to the peak, incline to the peak, converge on the peak; the peak is declared to be their foremost. Even so, monks... Third. Just as, monks, whatever root fragrances there are, black spikenard is declared to be their foremost. Even so, monks... Fourth. Just as, monks, whatever heartwood fragrances there are, red sandalwood is declared to be their foremost. Even so, monks... Fifth. Just as, monks, whatever flower fragrances there are, jasmine is declared to be their foremost. Even so, monks... Sixth. Just as, monks, whatever petty kings there are, all of them are followers of the Wheel-turning Monarch; the Wheel-turning Monarch is declared to be their foremost. Even so, monks... Seventh. 8-10. The Three Suttas Beginning with "Moon" Just as, monks, whatever light there is of star-forms, all of it is not worth a sixteenth part of the moon's light; the moon's light is declared to be their foremost. Even so, monks... Eighth. Just as, monks, in the autumn season, when the sky is clear and free of clouds, the sun, rising into the sky, dispelling all darkness in the air, shines, burns, and glows. Even so, monks... Ninth. Just as... Just as, monks, of all woven cloths, Kasi cloth is declared the best; even so, monks, whatever wholesome states there are, all of them have heedfulness as their root, converge on heedfulness; heedfulness is declared the best of these states. It is to be expected, monks, of a heedful monk, that he will develop the Noble Eightfold Path, that he will cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path. And how, monks, does a heedful monk develop the Noble Eightfold Path, cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, monks, a monk develops right view, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment… …he develops right concentration, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment… …thus, monks, does a heedful monk develop the Noble Eightfold Path, cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path. The Tenth. (Whatever is said about the Tathagata, that too should be expanded upon.) The Chapter on Heedfulness is the Fifth. Its summary: Tathagata, summit, root, essence, and rainy season; King, moon, and sun, and cloth is the tenth item. 6. The Chapter on Things to be Done with Strength 1. Discourse on Strength At Savatthi. “Just as, monks, whatever deeds are done with strength, all of them are done relying on the earth, established on the earth; even so, monks, a monk, relying on virtue, established on virtue, develops the Noble Eightfold Path, cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path. And how, monks, does a monk, relying on virtue, established on virtue, develop the Noble Eightfold Path, cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, monks, a monk develops right view, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment… …thus, monks, Monks, a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path. Just as, monks, whatever deeds requiring strength are done, all of them, relying on the earth, established on the earth, thus these deeds requiring strength are done; even so, monks, a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path. And how, monks, does a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develop the Noble Eightfold Path, make much of the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, monks, a monk develops right view, ending in the removal of passion, ending in the removal of aversion, ending in the removal of delusion; ... develops right concentration, ending in the removal of passion, ending in the removal of aversion, ending in the removal of delusion. Thus, monks, a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path. Just as, monks, whatever deeds requiring strength are done, all of them, relying on the earth, established on the earth, thus these deeds requiring strength are done; even so, monks, a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path. And how, monks, does a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develop the Noble Eightfold Path, make much of the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, monks, a monk develops right view, immersed in the Deathless, having the Deathless as its destination, ending in the Deathless; ... develops right concentration, immersed in the Deathless, having the Deathless as its destination, ending in the Deathless. Thus, monks, a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue who develops the Noble Eightfold Path, who makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path. Just as, monks, whatever deeds requiring strength are done, all of them rely on the earth, are established on the earth; thus are these deeds requiring strength done. In the same way, monks, a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develops the Noble Eightfold Path,
