Here, monks, a monk develops right view… develops right concentration, dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, culminating in relinquishment… Thus, monks, a monk developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, the evil unwholesome states that arise again and again, right in the middle makes them disappear, calms them.” The Ninth. 10. The Discourse on the Ship 158. “Just as, monks, a sea-going ship bound with rattan ropes, having been in the water for six months, and then hauled onto dry land in winter, its bindings, worn by wind and sun, when drenched by a rain cloud in the rainy season, easily loosen, become rotten; even so, monks, for a monk developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, the fetters easily loosen, become rotten. And how, monks, for a monk developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, do the fetters easily loosen, become rotten? Here, monks, a monk develops right view… develops right concentration, dependent on seclusion… unattached, reliant on dispassion, reliant on cessation, culminating in relinquishment… Thus indeed, monks, for a monk cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path much-practiced, with little difficulty the fetters subside, they become rotten. The Tenth. 11. The Discourse on the Guest House 159. "Just as, monks, a guest house. There, coming from the eastern direction, they dwell, coming from the western direction, they dwell, coming from the northern direction, they dwell, coming from the southern direction, they dwell, warriors too, coming, they dwell, brahmins too, coming, they dwell, merchants too, coming, they dwell, laborers too, coming, they dwell; even so, monks, a monk cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path much-practiced, those phenomena to be fully understood by direct knowledge, those phenomena he fully understands by direct knowledge, those phenomena to be abandoned by direct knowledge, those phenomena he abandons by direct knowledge, those phenomena to be realized by direct knowledge, those phenomena he realizes by direct knowledge, those phenomena to be developed by direct knowledge, those phenomena he develops by direct knowledge. "And what, monks, are the phenomena to be fully understood by direct knowledge? It should be said: the five aggregates of clinging. Which five? Namely – the aggregate of clinging to form… …the aggregate of clinging to consciousness. These, monks, are the phenomena to be fully understood by direct knowledge. And what, monks, are the phenomena to be abandoned by direct knowledge? Ignorance and craving for existence – these, monks, are the phenomena to be abandoned by direct knowledge. And what, monks, are the phenomena to be realized by direct knowledge? True knowledge and liberation – these, monks, are the phenomena to be realized by direct knowledge. And what, monks, are the phenomena to be developed by direct knowledge? Tranquility and insight – these, monks, are the phenomena to be developed by direct knowledge. And how, monks, does a monk cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path practicing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, those things to be fully understood by direct knowledge, he fully understands them by direct knowledge... ...those things to be developed by direct knowledge, he develops them by direct knowledge? Here, monks, a monk develops right view... ...develops right concentration based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment... Thus, monks, a monk developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, those things to be fully understood by direct knowledge, he fully understands them by direct knowledge, those things to be abandoned by direct knowledge, he abandons them by direct knowledge, those things to be realized by direct knowledge, he realizes them by direct knowledge, those things to be developed by direct knowledge, he develops them by direct knowledge. The eleventh. 12. The River Discourse 160. "Just as, monks, the river Ganges slopes to the east, inclines to the east, tends to the east. What do you think, monks, would that great crowd of people be able to make the river Ganges slope to the west, incline to the west, tend to the west?" "No, venerable sir." "For what reason?" "The river Ganges, venerable sir, slopes to the east, inclines to the east, tends to the east. It is not easy to make it slope to the west, incline to the west, tend to the west. That great crowd of people would only be partakers of weariness and vexation." "Even so, monks, a monk developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, kings or royal ministers, or friends or colleagues, or relatives or blood-relations, might invite him with wealth – 'Come, good man, what do these yellow robes mean to you? Why do you wander about with a shaven head and a bowl? Come, return to the lower life, enjoy wealth, and do meritorious deeds.' He Indeed, monks, a monk developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, rejecting the training, would revert to a lower state – this is not possible. For what reason? For, monks, that mind which for a long time has inclined to seclusion, leaned to seclusion, gravitated to seclusion – that, indeed, would revert to a lower state – this is not possible. And how, monks, does a monk develop the Noble Eightfold Path, make much of the Noble Eightfold Path?
