Just as, monks, whatever seed-plants and plant-growths attain growth, increase, and abundance, all of them rely on the earth, are established on the earth; thus do these seed-plants and plant-growths attain growth, increase, and abundance. In the same way, monks, a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, attains growth, increase, and abundance in the Dhamma. And how, monks, does a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue, developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, attain growth, increase, and abundance in the Dhamma? Here, monks, a monk develops right view, based on seclusion... ...he develops right concentration, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment... ...Thus, monks, does a monk, relying on virtue, established in virtue... established in it, developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, he attains growth, increase, and fullness in the Dhamma. The Second. 3. The Discourse on the Nāgas 151. Just as, monks, relying on the Himālaya, the king of mountains, nāgas grow their bodies, gain strength; having grown their bodies and gained strength there, they descend into small ravines, having descended into small ravines, they descend into large ravines, having descended into large ravines, they descend into small rivers, having descended into small rivers, they descend into great rivers, having descended into great rivers, they descend into the great ocean, there they attain greatness and fullness in body; just so, monks, a bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, attains greatness and fullness in the Dhamma. Here, monks, a bhikkhu develops right view, supported by seclusion, supported by dispassion, supported by cessation, culminating in relinquishment… develops right concentration, supported by seclusion, supported by dispassion, supported by cessation, culminating in relinquishment… It is in this way, monks, that a bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, attains greatness and fullness in the Dhamma. The Third. 4. The Discourse on the Tree 152. Just as, monks, a tree inclines to the east, slopes to the east, leans to the east. If its roots are cut, in which direction would it fall? "Where it inclines, venerable sir, where it slopes, where it leans." Just so, monks, , bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, inclines towards Nibbāna, leans towards Nibbāna, slopes towards Nibbāna. And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, incline towards Nibbāna, lean towards Nibbāna, slope towards Nibbāna? Fourth. 5. The Jar Sutta Just as, bhikkhus, a jar overturned only pours out water, it does not pour back in; even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, only vomits forth evil unwholesome states, he does not vomit them back in. And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, only vomit forth evil unwholesome states, he does not vomit them back in? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment… …he develops right concentration, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment… …Thus, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, only vomits forth evil unwholesome states, he does not vomit them back in. Fifth. 6. The Awn Sutta Just as, bhikkhus, a rice awn or a barley awn, if properly placed, when pressed by hand or foot, will pierce the hand or foot, or draw blood will produce it — this is possible. For what reason? Because, monks, the dart is well-aimed. In the same way, monks, a monk, with right view well-established, with the development of the path well-established, will break through ignorance, will produce knowledge, will realize Nibbāna — this is possible. For what reason? Because, monks, the view is well-established. And how, monks, does a monk, with right view well-established, with the development of the path well-established, break through ignorance, produce knowledge, realize Nibbāna? Here, monks, a monk develops right view based on seclusion… …he develops right concentration based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment… It is in this way, monks, that a monk, with right view well-established, with the development of the path well-established, breaks through ignorance, produces knowledge, realizes Nibbāna. The Sixth. 7. The Discourse on the Sky Just as, monks, in the sky, various winds blow: easterly winds blow, westerly winds blow, northerly winds blow, southerly winds blow, dusty winds blow, dustless winds blow, cold winds blow, hot winds blow, gentle winds blow, strong winds blow; In the same way, monks, for a monk who develops the Noble Eightfold Path, who makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path, the four foundations of mindfulness reach the perfection of development, the four right exertions reach the perfection of development, the four bases of psychic power reach the perfection of development, the five faculties reach the perfection of development, the five powers reach the perfection of development, the seven factors of awakening reach the perfection of development. And how, monks, for a monk who develops the Noble Eightfold Path, who makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path, do the four… also the four foundations of mindfulness reach the perfection of development, also the four right exertions reach the perfection of development, also the four bases of psychic power reach the perfection of development, also the five faculties reach the perfection of development, also the five powers reach the perfection of development, also the seven factors of awakening reach the perfection of development? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view... ...develops right concentration dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, culminating in relinquishment... The Seventh. 8. The First Cloud Discourse 156. Just as, bhikkhus, in the last month of summer, dust and mud are stirred up, and a great unseasonal cloud disperses and settles them in place; even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, disperses and settles in place the evil unwholesome states that have arisen. And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, disperse and settle in place the evil unwholesome states that have arisen? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view... ...develops right concentration dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, culminating in relinquishment... Thus, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making the Noble Eightfold Path abundant, the evil unwholesome... these states completely makes disappear, calms.” The Eighth. 9. The Second Discourse on the Cloud 157. “Just as, monks, a great cloud that has arisen, a great wind right in the middle makes it disappear, calms it; even so, monks, a monk developing the Noble Eightfold Path, making much of the Noble Eightfold Path, the evil unwholesome states that arise again and again, right in the middle makes them disappear, calms them.
