its meaning not having been expounded in detail, thus in detail. 'And the form cognizable by the eye, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated.' This indeed was said by the Blessed One. What was this said with reference to? Venerable Sir, if, when cultivating a form cognizable by the eye, unwholesome states increase, and wholesome states decrease, such a form cognizable by the eye should not be cultivated. But if, when cultivating a form cognizable by the eye, unwholesome states decrease, and wholesome states increase, such a form cognizable by the eye should be cultivated. 'And the form cognizable by the eye, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated.' That which was said by the Blessed One, was said with reference to this. "And the sound cognizable by the ear, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated." This indeed was said by the Blessed One. What was this said with reference to? ...such a sound cognizable by the ear should not be cultivated... ...such a sound cognizable by the ear should be cultivated. "And the smell cognizable by the nose, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated." This indeed was said by the Blessed One. What was this said with reference to? ...such a smell cognizable by the nose should not be cultivated... ...such a smell cognizable by the nose should be cultivated. "And the taste cognizable by the tongue, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated." This indeed was said by the Blessed One. What was this said with reference to? ...such a taste cognizable by the tongue should not be cultivated... ...such a taste cognizable by the tongue should be cultivated. "And the tangible cognizable by the body, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated." This indeed was said by the Blessed One. What was this said with reference to? ...such a tangible cognizable by the body should not be cultivated... ...such a tangible cognizable by the body should be cultivated. "And the mental object cognizable by the mind, Sārip said, "I declare in two ways – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated" – this indeed was said by the Blessed One. Referring to what was this said? Venerable sir, when cultivating a mind-cognizable phenomenon of such a kind that unwholesome qualities increase, and wholesome qualities decrease, such a mind-cognizable phenomenon should not be cultivated; and Venerable sir, when cultivating a mind-cognizable phenomenon of such a kind that unwholesome qualities decrease, and wholesome qualities increase, such a mind-cognizable phenomenon should be cultivated. "I declare mind-cognizable phenomena, Sāriputta, in two ways – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated" – that which was said by the Blessed One, this was said referring to this. Venerable sir, of this brief statement by the Blessed One, the meaning of which was not expounded in detail, I thus understand the meaning in detail. 120. “Excellent, excellent, Sāriputta! It is excellent, Sāriputta, that you thus understand in detail the meaning of this brief statement by me, the meaning of which was not expounded in detail. ‘I declare eye-cognizable forms, Sāriputta, in two ways – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated’ – this indeed was said by me. Referring to what was this said? Sāriputta, when cultivating an eye-cognizable form of such a kind that unwholesome qualities increase, and wholesome qualities decrease, such an eye-cognizable form should not be cultivated; and Sāriputta, when cultivating an eye-cognizable form of such a kind that unwholesome qualities decrease, and wholesome qualities increase, such an eye-cognizable form should be cultivated. ‘I declare eye-cognizable forms, Sāriputta, in two ways – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated’ – that which was said by me, this was said referring to this. “‘I declare ear-cognizable sounds, Sāriputta… and so on… such an ear-cognizable sound should not be cultivated… such an ear-cognizable sound should be cultivated… such a nose-cognizable odor should not... to be used… such a smell, cognizable by the nose, is to be used… such a taste, cognizable by the tongue, is not to be used… such a taste, cognizable by the tongue, is to be used… such a touch, cognizable by the body, is not to be used… such a touch, cognizable by the body, is to be used. “Mental phenomena, too, Sāriputta… such a mental phenomenon, cognizable by the mind, is not to be used… such a mental phenomenon, cognizable by the mind, is to be used. ‘Mental phenomena, too, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds— to be used and not to be used’— that which was said by me, was said with reference to this. Of this, Sāriputta, which was spoken by me in brief, the meaning is to be understood in this way in detail. 121. “Robes, too, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds— to be used and not to be used… Almsfood, too, Sāriputta… Dwellings, too, Sāriputta… A village, too, Sāriputta… A town, too, Sāriputta… A city, too, Sāriputta… A country, too, Sāriputta… A person, too, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds— to be used and not to be used.” When this was said, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Blessed One: “Of this, venerable sir, spoken by the Blessed One in brief, the meaning not having been expounded in detail, I understand the meaning in this way in detail. ‘Robes, too, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds— to be used and not to be used’— this was said by the Blessed One. With reference to what was this said? Venerable sir, robes of such a kind that by using them unwholesome states increase, wholesome states decrease— such robes are not to be used. And venerable sir, robes of such a kind that by using them unwholesome states decrease, wholesome states increase— such robes are to be used. ‘Robes, too, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds— to be used and not to be used’— that which was said by the Blessed One, was said with reference to this. “Almsfood, too, ... and, Sāriputta... ... such almsfood should not be used... ... such almsfood should be used... ... and, Sāriputta, I say of dwellings... ... such a dwelling should not be used... ... such a dwelling should be used... ... and, Sāriputta, I say of villages... ... such a village should not be used... ... such a village should be used... ... such a market town should not be used... ... such a market town should be used... ... such a city should not be used... ... such a city should be used... ... such a district should not be used... ... such a district should be used. "And, Sāriputta, I speak of persons in two ways— to be associated with, and not to be associated with." This is what was said by the Blessed One. What was this said in reference to? Venerable sir, a person by associating with whom unwholesome qualities increase and wholesome qualities decrease, such a person should not be associated with. But, Venerable sir, a person by associating with whom unwholesome qualities decrease and wholesome qualities increase, such a person should be associated with. "And, Sāriputta, I speak of persons in two ways— to be associated with, and not to be associated with." That which was said by the Blessed One, was said in reference to this. Venerable sir, of this brief statement by the Blessed One, the meaning of which was not elaborated, I thus understand the meaning in detail. 122. "Good, good, Sāriputta! It is good, Sāriputta, that of this brief statement by me, the meaning of which was not elaborated, you thus understand the meaning in detail. "And, Sāriputta, I speak of robes in two ways— to be used, and not to be used." This is what was said by me. What was this said in reference to? Sāriputta, a robe by using which unwholesome qualities increase and wholesome qualities decrease, such a robe should not be used. But, Sāriputta, a robe by using which unwholesome qualities decrease and wholesome qualities increase, such a robe... a robe should be used. ‘A robe, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds— to be used, and not to be used’— that which was said by me, was said with reference to this. (As the first, so should it be elaborated) Such a kind of almsfood… Such a kind of dwelling… Such a kind of village… Such a kind of town… Such a kind of city… Such a kind of country. ‘A person, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds— to be associated with, and not to be associated with’— this was said by me. With reference to what was this said? Whatever kind of person, Sāriputta, associating with whom, unwholesome states increase, wholesome states decrease— such a person should not be associated with. And whatever kind of person, Sāriputta, associating with whom, unwholesome states decrease, wholesome states increase— such a person should be associated with. ‘A person, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds— to be associated with, and not to be associated with’— that which was said by me, was said with reference to this. Of this, Sāriputta, which was spoken by me in brief, the meaning should be understood in detail thus. 123. If all, Sāriputta, the khattiyas were to understand the meaning of this which was spoken by me in brief, in such detail, it would be for the long-term welfare and happiness of all those khattiyas. If all, Sāriputta, the brahmins… If all, Sāriputta, the merchants… If all, Sāriputta, the workers were to understand the meaning of this which was spoken by me in brief, in such detail, it would be for the long-term welfare and happiness of all those workers. If the world with its devas, Sāriputta, with its Māra, with its Brahmā, with its recluses and brahmins, with its devas and humans, were to understand the meaning of this which was spoken by me in brief, in such detail, it would be for the long-term welfare and happiness of the world with its devas, with its Māra, with its Brahmā,
