is endowed with learning, is endowed with generosity, is endowed with wisdom. He has heard: 'The Thousandfold Brahmā is long-lived, beautiful, and abounds in happiness.' The Thousandfold Brahmā, monks, pervades and dominates a thousandfold world-system. And whatever beings are reborn there, he also pervades and dominates them. Just as, monks, a man with good eyesight, having taken a single myrobalan fruit in his hand, might examine it; even so, monks, the Thousandfold Brahmā pervades and dominates a thousandfold world-system. And whatever beings are reborn there, he... He pervades and abides, having resolved. To him it occurs: 'Oh, may I, with the breaking up of the body, after death, be reborn into the companionship of that thousand-world Brahma.' He directs that mind, he resolves on that mind, he develops that mind. His formations and abidings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the path, this is the way that leads to rebirth there. 166. Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, endowed with virtue, with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. He has heard: 'A two-thousand-world Brahma... a three-thousand-world Brahma... a four-thousand-world Brahma... a five-thousand-world Brahma is long-lived, beautiful, and abounds in happiness.' A five-thousand-world Brahma, bhikkhus, pervades and abides, having resolved, over a five-thousand-world system. And whatever beings are reborn there, he also pervades and abides, having resolved, over them. Just as, bhikkhus, a keen-sighted man might take five āmaṇḍa fruits in his hand and observe them; even so, bhikkhus, a five-thousand-world Brahma pervades and abides, having resolved, over a five-thousand-world system. And whatever beings are reborn there, he also pervades and abides, having resolved, over them. To him it occurs: 'Oh, may I, with the breaking up of the body, after death, be reborn into the companionship of that five-thousand-world Brahma.' He directs that mind, he resolves on that mind, he develops that mind. His formations and abidings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the path, this is the way that leads to rebirth there. 167. Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, endowed with virtue, with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. He has heard: 'A ten-thousand-world Brahma is long-lived, beautiful, and abounds in happiness.' A ten-thousand-world Brahma, bhikkhus, ten-thousand pervades the ten-thousandfold world-system, resolves upon it, and dwells. And whatever beings are born there, he pervades them, resolves upon them, and dwells. Just as, monks, a beryl gem, beautiful, of good origin, eight-faceted, well-polished, placed on a yellow blanket, shines, glows, and radiates; even so, monks, the ten-thousandfold Brahmā pervades the ten-thousandfold world-system, resolves upon it, and dwells. And whatever beings are born there, he pervades them, resolves upon them, and dwells. He thinks thus: ‘Oh, if only, with the breaking up of the body, after death, I might be reborn into companionship with the ten-thousandfold Brahmā!’ He applies that mind, he resolves upon that mind, he develops that mind. His formations and dwellings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, monks, is the path, this is the practice that leads to rebirth there. 168. Again, further, monks, a monk is endowed with faith, with virtue… with learning… with generosity… with wisdom. He hears: ‘The hundred-thousandfold Brahmā is long-lived, beautiful, and abounds in happiness.’ The hundred-thousandfold Brahmā, monks, pervades the hundred-thousandfold world-system, resolves upon it, and dwells. And whatever beings are born there, he pervades them, resolves upon them, and dwells. Just as, monks, a pure gold coin, skillfully hammered by a clever goldsmith's son at the mouth of a furnace, placed on a yellow blanket, shines, glows, and radiates; even so, monks, the hundred-thousandfold Brahmā pervades the hundred-thousandfold world-system, resolves upon it, and dwells. And whatever beings are born there, he pervades them, resolves upon them, and dwells. He thinks thus: ‘Oh, if only, with the breaking up of the body, after death, I might be reborn into companionship with the hundred-thousandfold Brahmā!’ He applies that mind, he resolves upon that mind… establishes that mind, he develops that mind. His volitional formations and abidings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the way, this is the practice that leads to rebirth there. 169. Again, furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, with virtue... with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. He hears: "The Ābhā devas... (and so on)... the Parittābhā devas... the Appamāṇābhā devas... the Ābhassarā devas are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness." He thinks thus: "Oh, may I, upon the breaking up of the body, after death, be reborn in companionship with the Ābhassarā devas!" He directs that mind, he establishes that mind, he develops that mind. His volitional formations and abidings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the way, this is the practice that leads to rebirth there. 170. Again, furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, with virtue... with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. He hears: "The Parittasubhā devas... (and so on)... the Appamāṇasubhā devas... the Subhakiṇhā devas are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness." He directs that mind, he establishes that mind, he develops that mind. His volitional formations and abidings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the way, this is the practice that leads to rebirth there. 171. Again, furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, with virtue... with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. He hears: "The Vehapphalā devas... (and so on)... the Avihā devas... the Atappā devas... the Sudassā devas... the Sudassī devas... the Akaniṭṭhā devas are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness." He thinks thus: "Oh, may I, upon the breaking up of the body... after the body's break-up, after death, may I arise in companionship with the Akaniṭṭha devas. He directs that mind, he resolves on that mind, he develops that mind. His volitions and his dwellings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the path, this is the way that leads to rebirth there. 172. Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, with virtue... with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. He hears: 'The devas who have attained the base of infinite space are long-lived, long-abiding, abundant in happiness.' He thinks: 'Oh, may I, after the body's break-up, after death, arise in companionship with the devas who have attained the base of infinite space.' He directs that mind, he resolves on that mind, he develops that mind. His volitions and his dwellings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the path, this is the way that leads to rebirth there. 173. Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, with virtue... with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. He hears: 'The devas who have attained the base of infinite consciousness are long-lived, long-abiding, abundant in happiness.' He thinks: 'Oh, may I, after the body's break-up, after death, arise in companionship with the devas who have attained the base of infinite consciousness.' He directs that mind, he resolves on that mind, he develops that mind. His volitions and his dwellings, thus developed, thus made much of, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the path, this is the way that leads to rebirth there. 174. Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, with virtue... with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. He hears: 'The devas who have attained the base of nothingness... ...the devas who have attained the base of neither perception nor non-perception are long-lived, long-abiding, abundant in happiness.' He... And thus it occurs to him: 'Oh, may I, after the breaking up of the body, after death, be reborn into the companionship of the devas of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception!' He directs his mind to that, he resolves his mind on that, he develops his mind on that. His volitional formations and abidings, thus developed, thus cultivated, lead to rebirth there. This, bhikkhus, is the path, this is the practice, that leads to rebirth there. 175. "Again, furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is endowed with faith, with virtue... with learning... with generosity... with wisdom. It occurs to him: 'Oh, may I, by the destruction of the taints, attain the taintless liberation of mind, liberation by wisdom, having realized it for myself with direct knowledge in this very life, and abide in it.' He, by the destruction of the taints, attains the taintless liberation of mind, liberation by wisdom, having realized it for himself with direct knowledge in this very life, and abides in it. This bhikkhu, bhikkhus, is not reborn anywhere." This is what the Blessed One said. Delighted, those bhikkhus rejoiced in the Blessed One's words. The Saṅkhārupapatti Sutta, the tenth, is finished.
