he dwells with perception joined with non-malice; he is not harmful, he dwells with perception joined with non-harmfulness – such a perception gained, Venerable sir, when cultivated, unwholesome states decline, and wholesome states increase. 'I declare, monks, perception gained to be of two kinds – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated; and these are different perceptions gained' – that which was said by the Blessed One, it was said in reference to this. 116. "'I declare, monks, views gained to be of two kinds – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated; and these are different views gained' – this was said by the Blessed One. What was that said about? Venerable sir, whatever kind of views gained, when cultivated, unwholesome states increase, wholesome states decline, such views gained should not be cultivated; and Venerable sir, whatever kind of views By resorting to a view-gain, unwholesome states decline, wholesome states increase. Such a view-gain should be resorted to. "What kind of view-gain, venerable sir, by resorting to it, do unwholesome states increase, and wholesome states decline? Here, venerable sir, someone holds such a view: 'There is no giving, there is no sacrifice, there is no offering, there is no fruit or result of good and bad deeds, there is no this world, there is no other world, there is no mother, there is no father, there are no spontaneously arisen beings, there are no recluses and brahmins in the world who are rightly gone, rightly practiced, who, having themselves realized and directly known this world and the other world, declare it.' By resorting to such a view-gain, venerable sir, unwholesome states increase, and wholesome states decline. "What kind of view-gain, venerable sir, by resorting to it, do unwholesome states decline, and wholesome states increase? Here, venerable sir, someone holds such a view: 'There is giving, there is sacrifice, there is offering, there is fruit and result of good and bad deeds, there is this world, there is other world, there is mother, there is father, there are spontaneously arisen beings, there are recluses and brahmins in the world who are rightly gone, rightly practiced, who, having themselves realized and directly known this world and the other world, declare it.' By resorting to such a view-gain, venerable sir, unwholesome states decline, and wholesome states increase. 'I declare, monks, a view-gain to be of two kinds: to be resorted to, and not to be resorted to; and these are different view-gains.' Thus, what was said by the Blessed One, it was said with reference to this. 117. "'I declare, monks, a personality-gain to be of two kinds: to be resorted to, and not to be resorted to; and these are different personality-gains.' Thus, this was said by the Blessed One. With reference to what was this said? What kind of personality-gain, venerable sir, When one cultivates an acquisition, unwholesome states increase, wholesome states decrease – such an acquisition of self-existence should not be cultivated; but, Venerable Sir, when one cultivates an acquisition of self-existence by which unwholesome states decrease, and wholesome states increase – such an acquisition of self-existence should be cultivated. "What kind, Venerable Sir, of acquisition of self-existence, when cultivated, causes unwholesome states to increase, and wholesome states to decrease? Venerable Sir, when one brings forth an acquisition of self-existence that is harmful, for the sake of incompleteness, unwholesome states increase, wholesome states decrease; when one brings forth an acquisition of self-existence that is harmless, for the sake of completeness, unwholesome states decrease, wholesome states increase. ‘I declare, monks, the acquisition of self-existence to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated; and these are distinct acquisitions of self-existence’ – what was said by the Blessed One, was said with reference to this." "Venerable Sir, this statement spoken concisely by the Blessed One, the meaning of which was not expounded in detail, I understand its meaning in this detailed way." "Excellent, excellent, Sāriputta! Indeed, Sāriputta, this statement spoken concisely by me, the meaning of which was not expounded in detail, you understand its meaning in this detailed way. "‘I declare, monks, bodily conduct to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated; and these are distinct bodily conducts’ – this was indeed said by me. With reference to what was this said? Sāriputta, when one cultivates bodily conduct by which unwholesome states increase, and wholesome states decrease – such bodily conduct should not be cultivated; but, Sāriputta, when one cultivates bodily conduct by which unwholesome states decrease, and wholesome states increase – such bodily conduct should be cultivated." bbo. “What kind of bodily conduct, Sāriputta, when practiced, do unwholesome qualities increase, and wholesome qualities decrease? Here, Sāriputta, someone is a killer of living beings, fierce, with bloody hands, intent on striking and wounding, without compassion for living creatures. And he is a taker of what is not given; whatever property or belongings of others, whether in the village or in the forest, he takes that which is not given, considering it theft. And he is a wrongdoer in sensual pleasures; he engages in sexual misconduct with those who are protected by their mother, protected by their father, protected by both mother and father, protected by their brother, protected by their sister, protected by their relatives, protected by their clan, protected by their Dhamma, who have a husband, who are liable to punishment, or even those garlanded for marriage. Such bodily conduct, Sāriputta, when practiced, do unwholesome qualities increase, and wholesome qualities decrease. “What kind of bodily conduct, Sāriputta, when practiced, do unwholesome qualities decrease, and wholesome qualities increase? Here, Sāriputta, someone, having abandoned the taking of life, abstains from the taking of life; he has laid down rod and weapon, is conscientious, compassionate, and dwells with kindness for all living beings. Having abandoned taking what is not given, he abstains from taking what is not given; whatever property or belongings of others, whether in the village or in the forest, he does not take that which is not given, considering it theft. Having abandoned wrong conduct in sensual pleasures, he abstains from wrong conduct in sensual pleasures; he does not engage in sexual misconduct with those who are protected by their mother, protected by their father, protected by both mother and father, protected by their brother, protected by their sister, protected by their relatives, protected by their clan, protected by their Dhamma, who have a husband, who are liable to punishment, or even those garlanded for marriage. Such bodily conduct, Sāriputta, when practiced, do unwholesome qualities decrease, and wholesome qualities increase. ‘Bodily conduct, monks, I declare to be of two kinds – to be practiced, and not to be practiced; and these are different kinds of bodily conduct.’ Thus was it said by me. This was said with reference to this. "Verbal conduct, monks, I declare to be of two kinds... Mental conduct, monks, I declare to be of two kinds... The arising of thought, monks, I declare to be of two kinds... The acquisition of perception, monks, I declare to be of two kinds... The acquisition of views, monks, I declare to be of two kinds..." "'The acquisition of a self-existence, monks, I declare to be of two kinds – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated; and these are mutually exclusive acquisitions of a self-existence.' Thus, indeed, was this said by me. With reference to what was this said? Sariputta, when cultivating such an acquisition of a self-existence that unwholesome states increase and wholesome states decrease, such an acquisition of a self-existence should not be cultivated. But Sariputta, when cultivating such an acquisition of a self-existence that unwholesome states decrease and wholesome states increase, such an acquisition of a self-existence should be cultivated. "What kind of acquisition of a self-existence, Sariputta, when cultivated, causes unwholesome states to increase and wholesome states to decrease? Sariputta, when bringing about a self-existence that is afflicted, for the sake of non-completion, unwholesome states increase and wholesome states decrease. When bringing about a self-existence, Sariputta, that is unafflicted, for the sake of completion, unwholesome states decrease and wholesome states increase. 'The acquisition of a self-existence, monks, I declare to be of two kinds – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated; and these are mutually exclusive acquisitions of a self-existence.' That which was said by me, was said with reference to this. Of this brief statement by me, Sariputta, the meaning should be understood in this detailed way. 119. "Visible forms cognizable by the eye, Sariputta, I declare to be of two kinds – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated. Sounds cognizable by the ear, Sariputta, I declare to be of two kinds – to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated." ...and not to be cultivated; And the smell cognizable by the nose, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated. And the taste cognizable by the tongue, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated. And the tangible cognizable by the body, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated. And the mental object cognizable by the mind, Sāriputta, I declare to be of two kinds: to be cultivated, and not to be cultivated." When this was said, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Blessed One: "Venerable Sir, I understand the meaning of this statement, spoken concisely by the Blessed One,
