These principles are different in meaning and different in expression. 355. Is a dispute a dispute-case? Is a dispute not a case? Is a case not a dispute? Is it both a case and a dispute? It may be that a dispute is a dispute-case. It may be that a dispute is not a case. It may be that a case is not a dispute. It may be that it is both a case and a dispute. Among these, which is a dispute that is a dispute-case? Here, monks dispute, saying 'It is Dhamma' or 'It is not Dhamma'... (and so on) ...saying 'It is a serious offense' or 'It is not a serious offense.' That which is there: quarreling, contention, dispute, disagreement, diverse speech, contrary speech, speaking in opposition, strife – this is a dispute that is a dispute-case. Among these, which is a dispute that is not a case? A mother disputes with her son, a son disputes with his mother, a father disputes with his son, a son disputes with his father, a brother disputes with his brother, a brother disputes with his sister, a sister disputes with her brother, a friend disputes with his friend – this is a dispute that is not a case. Among these, which is a case that is not a dispute? A case of accusation, a case of offense, a case of duty – this is a case that is not a dispute. Among these, which is both a case and a dispute? A dispute-case is both a case and a dispute. 356. Is an accusation an accusation-case? Is an accusation not a case? Is a case not an accusation? (Is it both a case and an accusation?) A case and indeed reproach? It may be that reproach is a case of reproach, it may be that reproach is not a case, it may be that a case is not reproach, it may be that a case and indeed reproach. Therein, which reproach is a case of reproach? Here, monks reproach a monk for transgression of morality, or for transgression of conduct, or for transgression of view, or for transgression of livelihood. That which is reproach therein, reproaching, speaking against, speaking after, being involved in the accusation, inciting, giving support – this is reproach, a case of reproach. Therein, which reproach is not a case? A mother reproaches her son, a son reproaches his mother, a father reproaches his son, a son reproaches his father, a brother reproaches his brother, a brother reproaches his sister, a sister reproaches her brother, a friend reproaches a friend – this is reproach, but not a case. Therein, which case is not reproach? A case of offense, a case of duty, a case of dispute – this is a case, but not reproach. Therein, which is both a case and reproach? A case of reproach is both a case and reproach. 357. Offense is a case of offense, offense is not a case, a case is not an offense, a case and indeed an offense? It may be that offense is a case of offense, it may be that offense is not a case, it may be that a case is not an offense, it may be that a case and indeed an offense. Therein, which offense is a case of offense? The five groups of offenses are a case of offense. The seven groups of offenses are a case of offense. This is offense, a case of offense. Therein, which offense is not a case? Attainment of stream-entry – this is an attainment, but not a case. Therein, which case is not an offense? A case of duty, a case of dispute, a case of reproach – this is a case, but not an offense. Therein, which is both a case and an offense? A case of offense is both a case and an offense. [cūḷava. 223] Is a duty a duty-case? Is a duty not a case? Is a case not a duty? Is it both a case and a duty? It may be a duty that is a duty-case. It may be a duty that is not a case. It may be a case that is not a duty. It may be both a case and a duty. Among these, what is a duty that is a duty-case? That which is a duty for the Saṅgha, a thing to be done, an announcement, a motion, a motion-seconded act, a motion-fourth act – this is a duty that is a duty-case. Among these, what is a duty that is not a case? The duty to one's teacher, the duty to one's preceptor, the duty to one's co-preceptor, the duty to one's co-teacher – this is a duty that is not a case. Among these, what is a case that is not a duty? A dispute-case, a censure-case, an offense-case – this is a case that is not a duty. Among these, what is both a case and a duty? A duty-case is both a case and a duty. The division of cases is concluded. Its summary: Cases and appeals, aspects and persons; origins, causes, and conditions, roots and sources. Where there is an offense, and mixed with origins; causes, conditions, and roots, sources and expressions; dispute is a case – these are the divisions of cases.
