Two periods of penance – penance for a concealed offense, penance for an unconcealed offense. And again, two periods of penance – penance for a side-offense, penance for a combined offense. For two individuals there is a cutting off of nights – for one undergoing probation and for one undergoing penance. Two kinds of disrespect – disrespect for persons and disrespect for the Dhamma. Two kinds of salt – natural and artificial. And again, two kinds of salt – sea salt and black salt. And again, two kinds of salt – rock salt and earth-extracted salt. And again, two kinds of salt – Roman salt and washed salt. Two kinds of use – internal use and external use. Two kinds of abuse – low abuse and high abuse. In two ways there is slander. – or of one desiring affection, or of one intending schism. Group meals are permitted in two ways: by invitation, or by request. There are two Rains Retreat initiations: the earlier, the later. There are two unrighteous suspensions of the Pātimokkha. There are two righteous suspensions of the Pātimokkha. Two persons are foolish: he who carries a burden not yet come, and he who does not carry a burden that has come. Two persons are wise: he who does not carry a burden not yet come, and he who carries a burden that has come. Again, two persons are foolish: he who perceives non-Dhamma as Dhamma, and he who perceives Dhamma as non-Dhamma. Two persons are wise: he who perceives non-Dhamma as non-Dhamma, and he who perceives Dhamma as Dhamma. Again, two persons are foolish: he who perceives non-Vinaya as Vinaya, and he who perceives Vinaya as non-Vinaya. Two persons are wise: he who perceives non-Vinaya as non-Vinaya, and he who perceives Vinaya as Vinaya. The effluents of two persons increase: he who feels remorse for what should not be felt remorse for, and he who feels remorse for what should be felt remorse for. The effluents of two persons do not increase: he who does not feel remorse for what should be felt remorse for, and he who feels remorse for what should be felt remorse for. Again, the effluents of two persons increase: he who perceives what is not allowable as allowable, and he who perceives what is allowable as not allowable. The effluents of two persons do not increase: he who perceives what is not allowable as not allowable, and he who perceives what is allowable as allowable. Again, the effluents of two persons increase: he who perceives an offense where there is no offense, and he who perceives no offense where there is an perceiving an offense. The influxes of two persons do not increase: one who perceives no offense in a non-offense, and one who perceives an offense in an offense. Again, the influxes of two persons increase: one who perceives Dhamma in what is not Dhamma, and one who perceives not Dhamma in what is Dhamma. The influxes of two persons do not increase: one who perceives not Dhamma in what is not Dhamma, and one who perceives Dhamma in what is Dhamma. Again, the influxes of two persons increase: one who perceives Vinaya in what is not Vinaya, and one who perceives not Vinaya in what is Vinaya. The influxes of two persons do not increase: one who perceives not Vinaya in what is not Vinaya, and one who perceives Vinaya in what is Vinaya. The Twos are finished. Its summary: Perception, gained, and the True Dhamma, requisites and persons; Truth, ground, going forth, taking, undertaking. Doing, giving, receiving, and night by enjoyment; Breaking the dawn, covering, and observing Uposatha. Invitation, another action, another object, and faults; Another, and two accomplishments, various and the same. Defeat, Sangha-remainder, grave offense, expiation, confession; Wrongdoing and wrong speech, and the seven classes of offenses. Ordination is broken, and two others likewise; Not to dwell, not to give, incapable and capable. Intentionally, with transgression, rejection, expulsion; Reinstatement, acknowledgement, acceptance, refusal. Harmful, and accusation, and two Kathinas likewise; Robes, bowl-covers, and two determinations likewise. Designation, and Vinaya, those skilled in Vinaya, and effacement; Committing an offense, and rising from it, and two other periods of probation. Two periods of penance, and others, cutting off the night, disrespect; Two salts, and three others, and by enjoyment, by accusation. Slander, and a group's rain, suspension, suitable burden; No offense, not Dhamma and Dhamma, and in Vinaya, in influxes, thus. 3. The Chapter of Threes 323. There is an offense committed while the Blessed One is living, not when he is fully extinguished; there is an offense committed when the Blessed One is fully extinguished, not when he is living; there is an offense while the Blessed One is living In the Blessed One, one incurs, even in the Fully Extinguished. An offense at the proper time one incurs, not at the improper time; an offense at the improper time one incurs, not at the proper time; an offense both at the proper time and at the improper time one incurs. An offense at night one incurs, not by day; an offense by day one incurs, not at night; an offense both at night and by day one incurs. An offense by one ten years old one incurs, not by one under ten years old; an offense by one under ten years old one incurs, not by one ten years old; an offense both by one ten years old and by one under ten years old one incurs. An offense by one five years old one incurs, not by one under five years old; an offense by one under five years old one incurs, not by one five years old; an offense both by one five years old and by one under five years old one incurs. An offense with a wholesome mind one incurs; an offense with an unwholesome mind one incurs; an offense with an indeterminate mind one incurs. An offense accompanied by pleasant feeling one incurs; an offense accompanied by painful feeling one incurs; an offense accompanied by neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling one incurs. Three grounds for accusation: by what is seen, by what is heard, by suspicion. Three ways of taking votes: secret, open, whispering in the ear. Three rejections: great desire, discontent, lack of austerity. Three permissions: little desire, contentment, austerity. Again, three rejections: great desire, discontent, lack of moderation. Three permissions: little desire, contentment, moderation. Three enactments: an enactment, a subsequent enactment, an unenacted enactment. Again, three enactments: a universal enactment, a regional enactment, a common enactment. Again, three enactments: an uncommon enactment, a one-sided enactment, a two-sided enactment. An offense by a fool one incurs, not by a wise person; an offense by a wise person one incurs, not by a fool; an offense both by a fool and by a wise person one incurs. An offense in the dark fortnight one incurs, not in the bright fortnight; an offense in the bright fortnight one incurs, not in the dark fortnight; an offense in the dark fortnight and incurs both in the dark and in the moonlight. There is what is allowable in the dark, not in the moonlight; there is what is allowable in the moonlight, not in the dark; there is what is allowable both in the dark and in the moonlight. There is an offense incurred in winter, not in summer, not in the rainy season; there is an offense incurred in summer, not in winter, not in the rainy season; there is an offense incurred in the rainy season, not in winter, not in summer. There is an offense the Sangha incurs, not a group, not an individual; there is an offense a group incurs, not the Sangha, not an individual; there is an offense an individual incurs, not the Sangha, not a group. There is what is allowable for the Sangha, not for a group, not for an individual; there is what is allowable for a group, not for the Sangha, not for an individual; there is what is allowable for an individual, not for the Sangha, not for a group. Three concealments conceal the object, not the offense; conceal the offense, not the object; conceal both the object and the offense. Three coverings – a bathhouse covering, a water covering, a cloth covering. Three concealed things prevail, not revealed ones – a woman prevails concealed, not revealed; the mantras of brahmins prevail concealed, not revealed; wrong view prevails concealed, not revealed. Three revealed things shine forth, not concealed ones – the moon's orb shines forth revealed, not concealed; the sun's orb shines forth revealed, not concealed; the Dhamma and Vinaya proclaimed by the Tathāgata shines forth revealed, not concealed. Three ways of seizing lodgings – the first one, the last one, the intermediate one. There is an offense a sick person incurs, not a healthy person; there is an offense a healthy person incurs, not a sick person; there is an offense both a sick person and a healthy person incur. Three unrighteous suspensions of the Pātimokkha. Three righteous suspensions of the Pātimokkha.
