This, monks, is not for the conversion of the unconverted... ...Having rebuked them... ...having given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the monks: 383. "If, monks, a schismatic act by unrighteous means, it is not an act and not to be done. A unanimous act by unrighteous means, it is not an act and not to be done. A schismatic act by righteous means, it is not an act and not to be done. A schismatic act by means resembling righteousness, it is not an act and not to be done. A unanimous act by means resembling righteousness, it is not an act and not to be done. Even one expels one, it is not an act and not to be done. "Monks, there are these four acts: a schismatic act by unrighteous means, a unanimous act by unrighteous means, a schismatic act by righteous means, a unanimous act by righteous means. Among these, monks, that which is a schismatic act by unrighteous means, this, monks, is an act..." because it is unrighteous, because it is schismatic, it is objectionable, it is not fit to stand. Monks, such a deed should not be done, nor have I permitted such a deed. Therein, monks, that deed which is united but unrighteous, this deed, monks, because it is unrighteous, is objectionable, it is not fit to stand. Monks, such a deed should not be done, nor have I permitted such a deed. Therein, monks, that deed which is righteous but schismatic, this deed, monks, because it is schismatic, is objectionable, it is not fit to stand. Monks, such a deed should not be done, nor have I permitted such a deed. Therein, monks, that deed which is righteous and united, this deed, monks, because it is righteous and united, is unobjectionable, it is fit to stand. Monks, such a deed should be done, and such a deed have I permitted. Therefore, monks, we will perform such a deed as is righteous and united – thus, monks, should you train yourselves. Now at that time, the group of six monks performed such deeds: they performed schismatic deeds unrighteously, they performed united deeds unrighteously; they performed schismatic deeds righteously, they performed schismatic deeds resembling righteousness, they performed united deeds resembling righteousness; they performed deeds with faulty motion but complete announcements, they performed deeds with faulty announcements but complete motion, they performed deeds with both faulty motion and faulty announcements; they performed deeds contrary to the Dhamma, they performed deeds contrary to the Vinaya, they performed deeds contrary to the Teacher’s Dispensation; they performed deeds that were rejected, unrighteous, objectionable, not fit to stand. Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One... "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them...
