and the two semblances of Dhamma; And unity by Dhamma itself, the Tathāgata permitted. A group of four, a group of five, a group of ten, and twenty; And a group of more than twenty, the Sangha is thus of five kinds. Excluding ordination, and the act of invitation; Along with the act of rehabilitation, it is valid with four (bhikkhus). Excluding two acts, ordination in the middle country; Rehabilitation is with five (bhikkhus), all acts are valid. Excluding one rehabilitation, those bhikkhus are ten (in number); The Sangha performs all acts, twenty (bhikkhus) are valid everywhere. A bhikkhunī, a female trainee, and a male novice, a female novice; One who rejects the final rule, one expelled for seeing an offense. One who does not atone for wrong view, a eunuch, one who cohabits by theft; A sectarian, an animal, a matricide, a parricide. One who defiles an Arahant bhikkhunī, one who causes a schism, one who sheds blood; One with ambiguous gender, one of different communion, one who performs psychic power across boundaries. For whom the Sangha performs an act, these are twenty-four; Rejected by the Fully Awakened One, these are not quorum-fillers. A fourth (bhikkhu) on probation, or one who gives probation; One who rehabilitates from the root, (these) are not performers of acts. One who is worthy of rehabilitation from the root, and one who is worthy of rehabilitation; These five are not performers of acts, declared by the Fully Awakened One. A bhikkhunī, a female trainee, and a male novice, a female novice; One who rejects the final (rule), one who is insane, one expelled for seeing (an offense) without feeling. One who does not atone for wrong view, eunuchs and those with ambiguous gender; Those of different communion, (different) boundaries, and for whom the act is in the air. For these eighteen, a protest is not valid; For a bhikkhu in good standing, a protest is valid. One who is pure but wrongly expelled, a fool who is rightly expelled; A eunuch, one who cohabits by theft, one who has gone away, an animal. A matricide, a parricide, an Arahant, one who defiles, one who causes a schism; And one who sheds blood, and one who has both genders. For these eleven, reinstatement is not proper; Both hands and feet, both ears and nose. Fingers, a goiter, a hump, a hunchback, and a dwarf; A clubfoot, one with marks of disease, and one who is branded, and one with elephantiasis. One with evil, one-eyed in the assembly, a leper, a lame person, and one whose limbs are cut; One weak in posture, an Blind, mute, and deaf. Blind, mute, and deaf, and just mute-deaf; And blind, mute, and deaf, these are not less than thirty-two. Their restoration happens, Declared by the Fully Awakened One; They should be observed, they should be remedied, There is no abandoning them. His acts of suspension, Are seven unrighteous; Following one who has fallen, Those seven too are unrighteous. Not following one who has fallen, Seven acts are righteous; And face-to-face questioning, And for reasons of confession. Mindfulness, not deluded, and guilt, And by reproof and expulsion; Banishment, reconciliation, And suspension, and probation. From the root, penance, rehabilitation, And likewise ordination; One does one thing for another, These sixteen are unrighteous. One does that for that one, These sixteen are righteous; One accuses another of something else, These sixteen are unrighteous. Two by two, that is its root, Those sixteen too are righteous; A wheel with a single root, The Conqueror declared "unrighteous." He performed an act of reproof, The Sangha, causing quarrels; An unrighteous, schismatic act, He went to another dwelling. There, united unrighteously, They performed an act of reproof for him; Elsewhere, by an unrighteous schism, They performed an act of reproof for him. Even by a semblance of schism, Even united, they did likewise; And united unrighteously, And by righteousness, a schism. And by a semblance, a schism, And united, these are the terms; Having made a single root, The wise one binds the wheel. The foolish, the expulsion of the competent, One should banish the family-corrupter; An act of reconciliation, One should do for the reviler. For not seeing, for not remedying, And who does not abandon his view; For them, an act of suspension, Declared by the Teacher. The wise one, above the acts of guidance, Should lead to reproof; Just their conformity, Behaves rightly when requested. The tranquility of those acts, And below, by the method of acts; In that, in that... in these deeds, and being there, he disputes. Undone and ill-done, and 'it should be done again'; In deeds and also with tranquility, those bhikkhus speak the Dhamma. Having seen those afflicted by misfortune, who have fallen into the deed, the Great Sage; proclaimed the appeasement, just like a surgeon with medicine. In this chapter are thirty-six stories. The Campeyya Chapter is concluded.
