by determination. A monk, having finished the kathina, sets out for a robe-hope, (thinking) "I will go." Having gone beyond the boundary, he attends to that robe-hope. By hope he obtains, without hope he does not obtain. It occurs to him: "Here I will make this robe, I will not go." He makes that robe. While that robe is being made, it is destroyed. For that monk, the kathina is uplifted by destruction. A monk, having finished the kathina, sets out for a robe-hope, (thinking) "I will go." Having gone beyond the boundary, it occurs to him: "Here I will attend to this robe-hope, I will not go." He attends to that robe-hope. That robe-hope is cut off for him. For that monk, the kathina is uplifted by the cutting off of hope. A monk, having finished the kathina, sets out for a robe-hope, (thinking) "I will go." Having gone beyond the boundary, he hears: "Indeed, in that dwelling, the kathina has been uplifted." It occurs to him: "Since in that dwelling the kathina has been uplifted, here I will attend to this robe-hope." He attends to that robe-hope. By hope he obtains, without hope he does not obtain. It occurs to him: "Here I will make this robe, I will not go." He makes that robe. For that monk, the kathina is uplifted by completion. A monk, having finished the kathina, sets out for a robe-hope, (thinking) "I will go." He Outside the boundary, he hears: "The Kathina, it seems, has been withdrawn in that dwelling." It occurs to him: "Since the Kathina has been withdrawn in that dwelling, I will wait for this robe-material right here." He waits for that robe-material. With hope, he gets it; without hope, he does not get it. It occurs to him: "I will not make this robe, nor will I go back." For that bhikkhu, the Kathina withdrawal is at the point of decision. A bhikkhu, having observed Kathina, departs for robe-material, thinking, "I will go back." Outside the boundary, he hears: "The Kathina, it seems, has been withdrawn in that dwelling." It occurs to him: "Since the Kathina has been withdrawn in that dwelling, I will wait for this robe-material right here." He waits for that robe-material. With hope, he gets it; without hope, he does not get it. It occurs to him: "I will make this robe right here, I will not go back." He makes that robe. While that robe is being made, it is lost. For that bhikkhu, the Kathina withdrawal is at the point of loss. A bhikkhu, having observed Kathina, departs for robe-material, thinking, "I will go back." Outside the boundary, he hears: "The Kathina, it seems, has been withdrawn in that dwelling." It occurs to him: "Since the Kathina has been withdrawn in that dwelling, I will wait for this robe-material right here, I will not go back." He waits for that robe-material. That robe-material is cut off for him. For that bhikkhu, the Kathina withdrawal is at the point of cutting off hope. A bhikkhu, having observed Kathina, departs for robe-material, thinking, "I will go back." Outside the boundary, he waits for that robe-material. With hope, he gets it; without hope, he does not get it. He makes that robe. Having made the robe, he hears: "The Kathina, it seems, has been withdrawn in that dwelling." For that bhikkhu, the Kathina withdrawal is at the point of hearing. A bhikkhu, having observed Kathina, departs for robe-material, thinking, "I will go back." As he has gone outside the boundary, it occurs to him: "I will wait for this robe-material right here, I will not go back." He waits for that robe-material... he attends to the hope for robes. That hope for robes of his is cut off. For that bhikkhu, the kathina is withdrawn due to the cutting off of hope. A bhikkhu who has observed the kathina goes forth with the hope for robes, (thinking) "I will return." Having gone outside the boundary, he attends to that hope for robes. He obtains it with hope, he does not obtain it without hope. He makes that robe. Having made the robe, (thinking) "I will return, I will return" – he lets the kathina withdrawal pass outside (the boundary). For that bhikkhu, the kathina is withdrawn due to exceeding the boundary. A bhikkhu who has observed the kathina goes forth with the hope for robes, (thinking) "I will return." Having gone outside the boundary, he attends to that hope for robes. He obtains it with hope, he does not obtain it without hope. He makes that robe. Having made the robe, (thinking) "I will return, I will return" – he meets the kathina withdrawal. For that bhikkhu, the kathina is withdrawn together with the bhikkhus. The Dozen on Hope is finished. 197. The Dozen on Business 320. A bhikkhu who has observed the kathina goes forth for some business. For him, having gone outside the boundary, a hope for robes arises. He attends to that hope for robes. He obtains it without hope, he does not obtain it with hope. It occurs to him thus: "I will make this robe right here, I will not return." He makes that robe. For that bhikkhu, the kathina is withdrawn at the completion (of the robe). A bhikkhu who has observed the kathina goes forth for some business. For him, having gone outside the boundary, a hope for robes arises. He attends to that hope for robes. He obtains it without hope, he does not obtain it with hope. It occurs to him thus: "I will neither make this robe, nor will I return." For that bhikkhu, the kathina is withdrawn at the decision (not to make it). A bhikkhu who has observed the kathina goes forth for some business. For him, having gone outside the boundary, a hope for robes arises. He attends to that hope for robes. He obtains it without hope, he does not obtain it with hope. It occurs to him thus: "I will make this robe right here, I will not return." He makes that robe. That robe of his, while being made, is lost. For that bhikkhu, the withdrawal due to loss Three kinds of Kathina withdrawal. A bhikkhu who has observed the Kathina, goes forth for some reason. When he has gone outside the boundary, a desire for a robe arises. He thinks thus: "Here I will attend to this desire for a robe, I will not return." He attends to that desire for a robe. That desire for a robe ceases for him. For that bhikkhu, it is a Kathina withdrawal due to the cessation of desire. A bhikkhu who has observed the Kathina, goes forth for some reason, thinking, "I will not return." When he has gone outside the boundary, a desire for a robe arises. He attends to that desire for a robe. He obtains it without desire, he does not obtain it with desire. He thinks thus: "Here I will make this robe." He makes that robe. For that bhikkhu, it is a Kathina withdrawal due to completion. A bhikkhu who has observed the Kathina, goes forth for some reason, thinking, "I will not return." When he is outside the boundary, a desire for a robe arises in him. He attends to that desire for a robe. He obtains it without desiring, he does not obtain it with desiring. He thinks thus: "I will make this robe right here, I will not return." He makes that robe. For that bhikkhu, the kathina is uplifted at the completion. A bhikkhu, whose kathina is spread, departs for some business without having determined it; nor does he think, "I will return," nor does he think, "I will not return." When he is outside the boundary, a desire for a robe arises in him. He attends to that desire for a robe. He obtains it without desiring, he does not obtain it with desiring. He thinks thus: "I will not make this robe, I will not return." For that bhikkhu, the kathina is uplifted at the determination. A bhikkhu, whose kathina is spread, departs for some business without having determined it; nor does he think, "I will return," nor does he think, "I will not return." When he is outside the boundary, a desire for a robe arises in him. He attends to that desire for a robe. He obtains it without desiring, he does not obtain it with desiring. He thinks thus: "I will make this robe right here, I will not return." He makes that robe. That robe, while being made, is lost. For that bhikkhu, the kathina is uplifted at the loss. A bhikkhu, whose kathina is spread, departs for some business without having determined it; nor does he think, "I will return," nor does he think, "I will not return." When he is outside the boundary, a desire for a robe arises in him. He thinks thus: "I will attend to this desire for a robe right here, I will not return." He attends to that desire for a robe.
